| Top 5: Red Sox’ worst defensive inning of 2008 | 09.23.08 at 5:22 pm ET |
The Indians erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth, a rally that was abetted largely by what might have been the worst Red Sox defensive inning of the season–yet one that did not feature a single error. With runners on first and second and one out, Grady Sizemore grounded a single to right under the glove of first baseman Sean Casey, who made the curious decision to dive. Jamey Carroll (who earlier this game collected his 500th career hit) bounced a tailor-made double-play ball to Kevin Youkilis, but the ball hopped up off of Youkilis’ chest, and so the third baseman could only retire Carroll at first. Rather than the end of the inning, the Indians had two on and two out, sustaining the rally to the point where consecutive doubles by Shin-Soo Choo and Jhonny Peralta gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead.
