Dustin Pedroia just was credited with a hit on a bad-hop grounder to shortstop, giving him 213 hits for the year (tied for fourth most in club history) and boosting his average to .327, one point shy of Joe Mauer. Interesting…
Xavier Nady’s homer in the top of the inning offered a reminder of how well the outfielders traded by the Pirates this year have done in the A.L. East. Nady has 12 homers with the Yankees, and is hitting .270/.321/.482/.804. Bay entered today with an even more impressive line of .298/.372/.536/.908.
The two are terrifically close friends from their days together with both the Padres and the Pirates. There is an irony to the fact that they ended up being teammates, since the Padres had to choose whether to part with Bay or Nady when they traded for Brian Giles at the end of the 2003 season. They chose to deal Bay, but later sent Nady to the Mets for Mike Cameron. Nady was subsequently shipped to the Pirates for Roberto Hernandez and Oliver Perez.
