| Five things we learned on Sunday | 02.16.09 at 7:25 am ET |
Almost all the Red Sox position players showed up by the end of the day on Saturday, including a trimmer David Ortiz, a bigger and stronger Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia, as well as Julio Lugo and J.D. Drew, among others. The only players who have yet to be seen in Fort Myers to date are Mike Lowell, Mark Kotsay and Jason Bay.
With the team coalescing, there was plenty to glean from Sunday:
1) Everything you want to know about Josh Beckett: The right-hander went into detail with Rob Bradford about the nature of his succession of injuries last year, including the fact that he was sufficiently concerned about his elbow during the regular season that he would talk on the phone with pitching coach John Farrell at 2 or 3 a.m. and that in the offseason the soreness in his rib cage during the offseason that he almost went for an MRI. He also addresses life as a staff ace, the last time (prior to Game 6 of the ALCS) that he couldn’t throw 90 m.p.h., his feelings about his contract status (the Sox have an option for 2010), and plenty more.
2) J.D. Drew’s back is still hurting: The same injury that sidelined the outfielder from mid-August through virtually the end of the regular season continues to plague the right-fielder as he enters the third season of his five-year deal. While Drew expressed hope that he would be fine to play, the development is an interesting one, given that the Sox outfield depth consists of Rocco Baldelli, whose ability to stay on the field is a bit of a question mark, Mark Kotsay, who is likely out until May after having undergone back surgery in the waning days of January, and Brad Wilkerson (who undergoes a physical on Tuesday that, barring a red flag, will lead to his contract becoming official).
3) Dustin Pedroia is hungry: Not in the literal sense that would have him eating ice cream (a treat that Pedroia abandoned, along with other “garbage” this offseason), but instead to return to the World Series. Pedroia suggested that he pushed himself this winter, motivated by the memories of losing Game 7 of the ALCS to the Tampa Bay Rays. As manager Terry Francona put it, Pedroia would likely give back every award he won in exchange for a trip to the World Series.
4) David Ortiz worked hard this offseason to become more lean while maintaining his strength. The slugger was out early yesterday to work on some agility drills, and then took some hacks in batting practice that suggested that, despite shedding some pounds, he has retained his ability to drive the ball a ridiculous distance. Ortiz, incidentally, will address the media on Monday.
5) When Paul McAnulty, signed by the Red Sox to a minor-league contract with an invitation to big-league camp, was drafted by the Padres out of Long Beach State in 2002, he was signed by none other than current Red Sox amateur scouting director Jason McLeod, then an area scout for San Diego. In fact, McAnulty was the first player whom McLeod ever signed. “In college his nickname was ‘Chauff,’ short for Chauffeur because he was ‘driving in’ all the runs,” McLeod said in an email.
