Fort Myers, Fla. – On a very quiet, business-like day at the minor league complex, the absence of David Ortiz was about the only significant news.
The slugger was not out on the field but rather back inside in the clubhouse, getting his work in after sleeping on his left shoulder and feeling it when he woke up Thursday morning.
“We kept David in today,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He actually slept on his left shoulder funny and I just ended up telling him to stay inside.”
Speaking of left shoulders, before Thursday’s workouts, Dustin Pedroia hinted that one of his big goals for this season was to play in all 162 games this season. While that’s a lofty and admirable goal, Francona said that’s not his top priority for his second baseman.
“I don’t know if that’s a goal of mine,” Francona said. “Sometimes guys need a blow. There’s times when they get beat up. I think he’s already proved that he’s going to be out there a lot. There are days, because of the way he plays, he’ll take that dive in the hole and land on that shoulder. I think I need to be smart enough to, every once in a while, pull the plug on him and give him a day to bounce back.”
Pedroia has jammed his left shoulder on several occasions in his career diving for ground balls.
The team held a nearly two-hour workout on Thursday.
Many players, coaches and team staff will take part in their 16th annual charity golf tournament Friday here in Fort Myers for Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, with a start of 1 p.m. Workouts will begin at 9 a.m.
All of the team’s best golfers are expected to participate, including John Smoltz, Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Charlie Zink. Francona, coaches and new Hall of Famer Jim Rice will also take part.
