Penny’s outing up in the air 03.02.09 at 5:13 am ET
By Mike Petraglia

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Righthander Brad Penny threw a 25-pitch side session that was cut short on Sunday in Fort Myers after he couldn’t get fully loose.

“We cut his bullpen and B.P. short (Sunday),” pitching coach John Farrell told WEEI.com Monday. “It got to the point where he threw 25 pitches of B.P. and he didn’t feel like he could get fully loose and certainly not turn up the intensity so rather than push it further, we felt it was a point of diminishing returns, so we cut it off at that.”

Farrell and manager Terry Francona will sit down and discuss the report on Penny’s session at City of Palms Park before deciding whether he is ready to pitch against Puerto Rico in a WBC exhibition on Thursday at City of Palms.

“I hope so,” Francona said. “That’s the (plan). He threw a side (Sunday). I have not gotten the (report) back. If there is a change, I’ll let you know (Tuesday).”

If Penny pitches Thursday, it will be his first outing in a game this spring. Penny is coming off right shoulder soreness that forced him to shut it down with the Dodgers last September.
