Evidently, Manny suffered for eight years 03.05.09 at 1:06 pm ET
By Rob Bradford

Dodgers Ramirez Spring Baseball‘I won.’

That was part of Manny Ramirez’s comment when asked at his press conference re-introducing him as a Dodger if he thought his reputation in Boston hurt him. Here is the full quote from Ramirez, who was in a jovial mood while answering questions:

“I don’t think so. I’m 37 years old, I got two more years. What happened in Boston, that’s in the past. I think it didn’t hurt me. It’s a bad economy. I got a great contract. And, hey, I made my money already. I’m in a happy place where I wanted to be. Actually, I won. I won getting out there because I’m in a great place. I’m in a place that I’m going to play, I’m going to be happy. My teammates, they love me. The fans love me, the way I play. Hey, sometimes it’s better off to have a two-year deal in a place that you’re going to be happy than have an eight-year deal in a place where you’re going to suffer. So I’m happy, I’m moving on with my life. All my friends in that city, I wish them the best. That’s in the past. I’m ready to move on.”

As for the rest of the press conference (the English-speaking/ESPN portion), here is some more:

(Introductory statement) “I’m baaack!”

Dodgers Ramirez Spring Baseball“First I want to thank the McCourt family for doing this good investment. Second, I want to thank Scott (Boras) for making the deal happen. Good job. And I’m happy to be back. Like I told Joe (Torre) we have some unfinished business, I’m here to play like I did last year. That’s what I do, play the game hard, respect the other side and that’s what you guys are going to get from me.”

“First I’ve already made my money. Two, I’ve got Scott and he’s of the best in the business, that’s why I got him. When you’re negotiating a contract you’ve got to patience and confident. I’m just happy … it’s better late than never. Everything that happens is for a reason, I’m here for a reason. I was looking for this place for eight years, now I’m here and I’m just going to give all I got.”

(When will you be ready?) “I don’t know. I’m going to take it slow. I’m going to get my legs ready. I’m going to take some BP, soft toss, some fly balls. I’ve got to get my Gold Glove ready, I’m pretty sure you know that. I’ve got to save my cannon for the season. I’m just going to take my time and prepare myself for the games.”

(What took so long to get the contr) “You’re going out there, you’re negotiating to the end. The deal is done. I’m happy with the deal that I got. I’m in a good position and I love it.”

(Is there an option?) “Yes. I’m happy.”

(Are you going to opt-out) “No, not yet. I’m going to play my first year.” (Laughter)

“Like I said, I’ve already made my money. I had a great time in LA, my teammates, they’re excited for me to be here. That’s why I choose LA.”

“I love to play. I think everybody needs spring training to play the games to get ready for the season. I wanted to come to get myself ready and take some fly balls and prepare for the season. I’m just happy the deal got done. We still have three weeks and I’m pretty sure that’s enough to get me ready for the season.”

(When asked about new additions, Torre says, “First off you ask where Manny where he wants to hit and then you go from there,” to which Ramirez added …)

“You the one who make the lineup Joe.”

(Torre went on to say that he didn’t know if Ramirez would hit third or fourth.)

The picture above the story was in answer to “how big of an a-hole are you Manny”?

    Que the violins!
Awwwwww muffin. You poor thing. What a martyr you are Manny, suffering like that for so long. Playing on great teams in front of fans that actually give a sh*t. Standing up to that bully/meany Jack McCormick. (I heard he was like the 3rd toughest guy in his nursing home!)….And really, how did you manage to feed your family on a measly $20 mill per year?
But now the trials and tribulations are over. You get to play for a craptastic team in front of apathetic fans, who arrive in 3rd inning and leave in the 7th. You have an entire ownership group kissing your arse and no mean secretaries to force you to put them in line. And of course you’re getting paid $25 million this year!
    You’re my hero, Manny!

I was a Manny backer up until he completely shut it down and began to hurt the Red Sox, all because he wanted a better deal. He was my favorite player up until then and unfortunately I will completely despise him for the rest of his career. Break a leg Manny. No seriously!

  • josh

Man.To think I really dug this guy as a Red Sock.I only wished dumd LA didn’t cave in and sighn this guy.I just hope he breaks a leg or just disappears. What a terrible human being.I would like to see him leave our country as well.We don’t need people like him in our country.

  • lwinlc

It galls me that this guy can get away with all the shenanigans he pulled in Boston and still get ANY kind of contract. He’s despicable and a scourge on the game of baseball. Let’s hope there aren’t more like him out there.

  • dano

Manny, you big baby, all you care about is your greasy effing self.

Hope that beach house falls into the sea next earthquake.

  • patty

The whole interview makes me want to “hurl”. Ya “you choose LA” . There weren’t alot of other offers on the table. He’ll pull the the crap out there!

  • dj

hahaha manny you make everyone laugh. yeah you won at leaving boston, but thats all you’ll be winning pal. only took you 2 weeks or so into spring training to sign with a team you clown, i enjoyed Sports Center playing the top 10 plays about you, i dont think you made a catch and how about tripping over yourself in the outfield? your cleats are untied, you worthless scumbag.

    good luck torre.

  • groovyhassle

Manny is a child who plays a child’s game. He is not very cool. I do not hate him. I used to like to watch him hit homers for the Sox. I don’t care that he pounded the old dude or that he bitch-slapped yuke. if yuke doesn’t slap him back, then i guess yuke got what he deserved. I do find Manny amusing in an entertainment sort of way. I do wish he still played for the Sox.

  • Joe

Manny should be tested for roids on the brain. How can somone who grew up here in NY be such a idiot 37 years old and still cant speak english? I bet he signs his contract with an X. Enjoy winning 70 games this year you putz as the Sox win another World Series this time with out you.

  • miniFelger

I wish he got the four year deal. Think about it, its like the car wreck by the side of the road everyone can’t help but stop to look. I would like to see the Vegas odds on when the first Manny episode is (I think the over under should be the all star break when Manny’s second cousin twice removed has a canker sore and he needs some extra time to help convalesce her). Or how about if the Dodgers are out double digit games by the break, mmmmm.

P.S. I got a feeling that when the paperback version of Joe Torre’s book comes out that maybe, just maybe there might be a few more chapters.

Manny Ramirez is one of the most dispicable human being on the face of the planet in my mind. To actually use the word “suffer” in referencing his tenure in Boston brings himself to a new level. The thought that we as Sox fans turned a blind eye and/or took Manny’s side year after year until it finally boiled over last season is an indication of the treatment Manny received. We cheered, stood on our feet, paid money to see him play, and this is how it ended up. Some fans are still brainwashed by his antics. Post 12 says “Yuke” got what he deserved. Are you kidding? Slapping a teammate might be the most demeaning things someone can do to another, and even then we acted like Manny was just a silly goofball. No one will ever argue Manny’s talent as a hitter, and those who say they always hated Manny and rooted for the Sox despite him are liars. At one time or another we all believed he was a funny, lighthearted dimwit, but it is finally over. What a shame.
