Josh Beckett to appeal suspension 04.14.09 at 2:53 pm ET
By Alex Speier

WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford has learned that Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett will appeal a six-game suspension that was handed down by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. MLB’s punishment came in response to a pitch thrown in the direction of Angels outfielder Bobby Abreu’s head during a game stoppage on Sunday.

Abreu had asked for time while Beckett repeatedly checked the runner (Chone Figgins) on second base. The pitcher was unaware that the umpire had granted Abreu’s request, and so was in mid-delivery when he realized it. Beckett completed his delivery, his pitch sailing over Abreu’s head and towards the backstop. Abreu shouted at the pitcher, and Beckett yelled back while moving towards the plate. The two were separated as the benches and bullpens emptied.

Beckett said afterwards that had no intention of hitting Abreu in the head, and that he simply wanted to complete his delivery. Major League Baseball chief of discipline Bob Watson interpreted the matter differently, resulting in the suspension. Here is the text of the press release from MLB:

Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of the Angels’ Bobby Abreu and for his aggressive actions after the pitch that incited the bench-clearing incident. Beckett’s six-game suspension is scheduled to begin tonight, when Boston continues its series at Oakland; if he chooses to appeal, then his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

Angels’ hitting coach Mickey Hatcher has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his aggressive actions during the incident. Hatcher’s suspension is scheduled to be served tonight, when the Angels play at Seattle.

In addition, undisclosed fines have been issued to Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia and players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier for their actions during the incident.

Had Beckett accepted the suspension, he would have been eligible to return on Tuesday, April 21, against the Twins. Because of Thursday’s off-day, all of the Sox starters except for Beckett could have stayed on a normal schedule of four days’ rest for their next turn. But with the decision to appeal, that is now moot.

Beckett is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 13 innings in his two starts this year.

What a joke. Bob Watson sticking it to the Sox every chance he gets. 6 games and he wasn’t even ejected from the game by the umpires. But “Pontius Pilate” Watson waves his staff and gives him 6 games and a hefty fine. Three of their guys get tossed by the umpires and only get fined. Speier comes in from the bullpen to get involved and he is only fined. Becket went through with the pitch when the umpire granted the timeout to late, so he wouldn’t get injured. If he wanted to hit Abreu, he certainly would have.

Fines and suspensions??? What example is this extremely popular pitcher setting? Just one kid who sees his hero intentionally throw a pitch to scare or hurt another player really bothers me. I know for a fact that as I grew up playing baseball (and as a pitcher) that if I lost control of a ball and it either hit the player or came close it was mandatory from the coach to apologize. Just seems like good sportsmanship to me!

this is BS!!!! first of all if you watch the video again you’ll see Abreu still in his stance hloding the bat with two hands and he is still in the batters box! how does or how did he call time??? by verbally asking for it? then Tek would’ve stood up! Next Beckett already lifted his left foot as the umpire yells time and steps out of his crouch!!! MLB better fix this as soon as possible!

This whole deal stinks. Umpire did not throw Beckett out of game. Worse case fine only. The Angels manager thinks he knows everything except beating the Red Sox in the post season.

The whole thing stinks, if he didn’t get tossed from the game then he shouldn’t get a suspension. trust me if beckett was aiming for abreu’s head he would have taken it off. it’s so obvious he was intending to stave off injury and as usual it was another chance for dumb a_ _ watson to screw the red sox again. he should be fined and suspended for all his shoddy work each week.

Waaaaaaah. Boo Hoo!. Everyone is always picking on us. We never do anything wrong. Everybody is just jealous. Get over yourselves Boston. Be men instead of cry babies. Now I see why the whiner line is so popular.

In my opinion Josh Beckett is being selfish. He should accept the suspension and serve it immediately. That would be best for the team and the rotation.

Josh Beckett needs to have a great year. He has only had ONE good year in the 3 that he has been here, and he’s a one season with 12-10 record and a 4 plus ERA away from making the Hanley Ramirez trade a DISASTER for Boston. Not a good start.
