Lowell to Texas? 12.09.09 at 6:19 pm ET
By Rob Bradford

INDIANAPOLIS — According to sources, the Red Sox are in trade talks with the Rangers in a deal that would send Mike Lowell to the Rangers. One source characterized the potential trade as “possible, but not close”. One name that could be potentially coming back from Texas is catcher Max Ramirez. Stay tuned …

Are you sure the potential new player’s first name is not Ramon?

  • HeidiHeartsNick

I hope the player’s first name is Nick and last name Green.

  • http://weei.com Ron

Is this a joke?? ugggg! Theo what are you doing?

  • HeidiHeartsNick

This team has two Ramirez players and neither is named Manny.

    WTF Theo?

  • http://weei.com Ron

Who plays 3rd? , i guees this is “the bridge year” As the Yankees continue to get better we are dumping salary.

  • Jason

If they trade Lowell you’d have to think they’d sign beltre!!! Not sure how thrilled I’d be with that!!!

  • Hidhod

I would like to dump payload. Think about Beltre with a 48 homer year with the Sox.

  • Jason F

I believe the plan would be to have Youkilis move back to third as it’s easier to find someone to plug into first base.
That is unless the Sox really are in on the Adrian Beltre talks, if so then Beltre who is a gold glover at third base but hasn’t hit like he did in his break out year with the Dodgers.
If they are serious about Beltre who is 29 and a gold glover then they sign him to play third and keep Youk at first.
The other option is moving Youk back to third and trading for Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres.
I gotta say I’m not thrilled with the prospect of Beltre being signed, living here in Seattle I’ve seen him not hit and I don’t know how Sox fans would react to that.

  • rtrites

That’s a great idea maybe Beltre & Ortiz can juice together. Trade mike lowell, so when Bay and his 100 plus RBI’s are gone, you trade lowell and his 90 plus RBI, who will drive in the runs? The two big RBI outfielders Drew& Ellsbury this gets better everyday. Who is running this team Bozo the clown? Maybe the sox could sign randy johnson he is only 46 to go with half a season Wakefield. So lets get this right trade for another catcher. And trade away a 90 plus RBI guy because the Sox have to much Run production. There is also a report that the sox are interested in Duchscherer but are waiting for him to go on waivers. Another blockbuster deal in the works

  • mark

are any of the ramirez’s going to wear number 24 so i can wear my manny shirt again i mean my ramon shirt

  • HeidiHeartsNick

    Nick Green is dreamy.

  • bootless

I kind of like this as a Sox fan. Dump some salary, get a good catching prospect back in Rameriz and open up the option for a Adrian Gonzalez trade or Adrian Beltre signing. That would be a great infield defensively. I just really said I like Adrian Beltre? That Adrian Gonzalez idea sounds better.

  • frank

Maybe they can just make the lineup better and sign Bay and Holliday, as our offense is what ended hurting us in the playoffs. You sign both and either move drew to 1st or Bay. If they want to win a championship we need offense.
    Imagine:
    1. Ells CF
    2. Pedro 2B
    3. Youk 3b
    4. Martinez C
    5. Bay 1B
    6. Holliday LF
    7. Drew RF
    8. Papi DH
    9. Sac SS

I know it is very wishful thinking, but could you imagine that offense raking.

  • Judson

I’m a Texas fan, and no offense to the Red Sox or any fans, but the Rangers would be getting the short end of the stick. Lowell is on the quick downslide of his career, isn’t as good of a third baseman as we have (Michael Young), and probably wouldn’t stay long here anyway. Max Ramirez, on the other hand is young (and still cheap for that matter) and many people feel like he is the best defensive catcher we have. IF you guys get him, congrats. But I pray it doesn’t happen.

  • don oleniak

the red sox will sign someone who used to be good and the yankees will continue to add first rate talent——-looks like the good old days again.

theo said we need to get a few players to bridge the gap—-which translated means we will sign a couple of has-beens onto the payroll.

waite until 20012 !!!!we will show them !!!

i wonder what kind of free agents will be available next year??????anything good???i certainly hope so

  • joe

Judson, I don’t think they would bring him in to play 3rd, but a RH power bat, which we need in the lineup.. besides, Max is 3rd string catcher.. I think Teagarden is going to get alot better next year. Our best defensive catcher isn’t going to do any good in AAA ball.
We really need a RH power bat.

  • Jarvis

    People, be serious.
Martinez will get extended. He is young and a great hitter – even for a 1b. His legs (and bat) will be preserved at 1b with spot catching ( i.e., backup). Youk goes to third where he belongs and the if is set. That leaves lf, c, dh (ortiz is done, lucky to get anything for him but theo will hold another year). Mauer is the 2010 plan or 2009 trade deadline target. Remember Yankees also on hunt for C. Twins can’t pay $140mm so game on. Sox will trade ellsbury and buckholtz for Mauer, Watch! If not, fielder to 1b and vmart back behind plate.

Sox need pitching. They lost 2nd and 3rd best relievers to braves and need a top 3 starter to back up Lester/Beckett. Buckholtz will be trade chip for that spot (Halladay hopefully, but that price will be very very steep – read 2-3 very good players or 1+ take Vernon wells salary).

Prediction: sox finish at least 10-12 gb of Yankees in 09.

  • Joe

To all you foolish Pink Hat fans and especially Jason at 7:01 get your heads out of the sand and stop the Adrian Gonzalez dreams because he isn’t going nowhere. Put it this way if you offer John Lester then they will be open to discussion. Right now you all better be praying Theo and John don’t drop the ball on Bay like they did with Teixeira or you might be looking at 4th-5th place division finish.

  • Brian

Hey Joe, you are the foolish one.. John Lester will never enter any discussion whatsoever with any team. Secondly whether we sign Jason Bay or not, the Red Sox will still NEVER finish behind the Rays, Blue Jays, or Orioles. Yeah 4th-5th place.. HAHAHA

  • Yanks10

Jarvis, if the Twins let Mauer get away then it’s a sign the team is going away. There’s no way they can let the best catcher in the game and a hometown kid get away. It won’t happen. So the Sox won’t get him.

As for the Yanks, they aren’t necessarily “on hunt for C” at this point. They have one of the best hitting C prospects in the game and might be willing to wait for his defense to come around. Not to mention, Jorge still has some game left.

If the Sox go out and sign Beltre or shift Youk to 3rd and V-Mart to 1st, they’ll be fine, with Belte being the #1 option. Do I think they’re going to be as good as NY this year? No. But Boston is always going to be in the mix because they’re committed to winning (not every team can say that), they have talent in the system, and they can’t allow the Yanks to pull too far away or else Red Sox Nation will revolt.

For those concerned about the DH spot, Big Fluffy probably won’t be there long. His career seems to be fading as quickly as it appeared (hmmm, wonder why). V-Mart, with suspect defensive abilities, will probably wind up being the main DH in another year, with the ability to do spot duty at C and 1B. Of course this is all much easier to do if Beltre is in the fold, Youk is at 1B and Ramirez proves capable of being the everyday C.

Let us not forget that Reagan’s future vp (Bush) and cia chief (Casey) met with the Ayatolla Khomeini behind the back of the then-current Carter administration (treason) and arranged for Iran to keep the American hostages until after the election. In return Iran got, at the very least, a conduit thru which to illegally receive missiles and other armaments–which came to light when traitor Ollie North got busted taking the missile $$$ and giving it to friends in Central America who turned out, naturally enough, to be drug smugglers USA-bound. Ah, the good old days…

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
