Mike Lowell is not a first baseman. Kevin Youkilis’ marvelous versatility notwithstanding, the two positions require different skill sets, and though any good-gloved major leaguer can stand in at first base and not be a horror show–that’s why the two-tool players are so often tried out over there in hopes they can fake it well enough to keep their bats in the lineup–first base is NOT an easy position to play WELL. Neither is third base. When healthy, Mike Lowell is a very good third baseman. He is not a first baseman. Are we square on this one? This debate reminds me of the even more hilarious discussion of Youk going to second base. Dude is not a middle infielder. He’s a grand good corner guy. Not a middle infielder. Not!

I do hope Mike Lowell stays with the Sox and gets a chance to show how much stronger his defense can be after he’s got a year of rehab under his belt. Hip surgery is a long recovery if you’re not doing PEDs. Probably he will recover a significant amount of range this year and will not be the defensive liability that he was when hobbled by the hip and resulting limited training. As we all know, he’s a fine ballplayer and a five-star class act who gives his teammates a great deal off as well as on the field. And that bat speed has not slowed down one bit. Dude can still hit dingers and double home whoever you’ve got on the bases, even if he has to book it to get to second in time . Probably they will move him this summer, or even this spring once he’s shown he’s healthy. But I hope he’s playing way too well to make that worth their while.
