At the end of the day it’s a solid signing for the sox. On Paper He’s a low tier 1 getting paid 2 man money. The fact that lackey had a “superior” record is irrelevant he was with western division winning angels for his whole career vs the dregs that are the marlins/jays.

I am surprised at how close some of their other career stats are. AJ k’s more but also walks more guy’s, But lackey gives up more hits . The thing that stands out though is as a right hander(not as unusual for a lefty)but as a righty lackey has 4 seasons of more hits than IP including last year and for his career it’s higher as well. All this while pitching in a pitchers park translates into higher numbers in the al east across the board as well so don’t expect a sub 4 era this year. But that doesn’t mean he can’t help them win.

I do think the Yankees overpaid for A.J at the time, But there was more competition for him at the time in Atlanta and Baltimore etc, Which was not the case for lackey and (no the mets don’t count) so he didn’t have the leverage that AJ did, But in the end and for purposes of this article and the comparison, AJ was a big part of the team that just won the world series. So So you have to call that signing a success. Im sure red sox fans hope lackey can help do the same. And i have no doubt that he can .

Why do they insist on using Wins to compare pitchers from two different teams? If the same pitcher was pitching for the Blue Jays 2000-2005 and then put that guy on the Angels 2000-2005 which guy ya think would end up with the better record? Exactly.

lackys a great sign last year the sox used their bullpen to much at the beggining of the year and at the end as well so signing lackey will give them more innings so that their bullpen can be not over used and that will make the sox a much better team and besides lackey is a great playoffs player no matter what team hes facing look at what he did last year and remember lackey is not a number one starter so the stress level is going to be so much lower

Any long signings, like 5 years, can bite any team. However, the Angels were in full pursuit of Lackey and imminently preparing to up their original offer of 4/$70 to retain him. At the same time the NYY were entering the bargaining. For Theo to so quickly pull this off was a master stroke because it not only made the Sox roster perhaps the best and deepest in baseball, it kept Lackey away from arch-rivals the Angels & NYY. That’s worth a few more million. Adding that 6th year option to compensate for injury makes it fair. The Sox entire 6-man rotation are cusses enough to egg each other on to new heights. I like this strategy of top pitching & tight defense for what is still a high OBP/200HR team. What’s not to like.

There seems to be one missing fact in all the talk about lackey and Burnett, Lackey pitched for a winning team, burnett pitched on losing team. Also lackey has had injury problems in the past, burnett has not had injury problems. Lets see how lackey does on a team that can’t score runs on the road. Ask anybody that knows pitching and they will tell you Burnett has some of the best stuff in baseball. He just hasn’t been able to control it yet. Lackey is a average pitcher, nothing more. Why else would the Angels let him go, they know something more about him then anybody. And they need starting pitching.He will be a bust in Fenway he never pitched good there.

Lackey has missed a good part of the last few seasons. He’s now an injury risk hence the clause with the elbow issue in this contract. He is getting hurt as he is getting older and isn’t as dominant as he was a few years ago. He is a solid pitcher and a competitor so that is a huge plus. All in all a good signing for the Sox, but he is passed his prime years and certainly with a back loaded contract the older he gets and the worse he gets the more they will be wearing that contract if his arm doesn’t hold up as he won’t be tradeable regardless of any no-trade clauses. Aj is more hit or miss. His stuff is still off the charts and he could easily throw a no-hitter any night or bomb terribly. Until he can get more consistent like the roll he got on his last year in Toronto the potential is there, but how much can you trust him start to start has yet to be seen.

john lackey is good at one thing he can beat the bad teams. In may he was 1-1 both games with seattle he had a 6.05 era. In june he was 1-2 lost to TB and LAD and beat the mightly SF Giants his era was 4.50. july was his best month by far he was 5-1 he beat the yankees once and the twins once, his other 3wins were baltimore, oak, cleveland, and lost to the rangers. Aug he was 2-3 with wins over Baltimore, and oakland, with losses to texas, cleveland, and detroit. Sept he was 2-1 he beat seattle and texas, and lost to boston. So to sum this up he beat a team with a winning record 3 times. boy he must be worth 18 million a year.

Part of the reason so many people were shocked at the five guaranteed is because Burnett had NEVER pitched back to back injury free seasons before signing his current deal (This season was the first time he’s ever pitched more than 30 innings after pitching 30 the prior season.

Meanwhile, before these last two seasons, Lackey had pitched five consecutive 30+ start seasons dating back to his first full season.

Calling Lackey injury prone while, in the same breath, claiming that Burnett is not is laughable. Other than these last two years, Lackey has never been an injury risk, whereas Burnett has an absolutely terrible injury history.

I think it’s fairly clear they’re about the same pitcher. Burnett gets more Ks but the WHIP is even. Given what the two contracts are Lackey looks like a better signing. However, it seems that the Yankees felt it necessary to get a player like him last year – and I guess it worked out for them. Apples to apples, Lackey’s contract is better for the RedSox for about the same player.
