| Tito on Lowell: ‘We’ll take care of him’ | 01.14.10 at 6:48 pm ET |
Speaking before the Boston baseball writers’ dinner tonight at the Westin Waterfront in South Boston, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he doesn’t expect any quick solution to the Mike Lowell situation on his roster. “I don’t think that’s possible,” Francona said of Lowell, who recently had surgery on his right thumb.
“He just had surgery. He’s not going to pick up a bat until probably the second week of February. He’s going to have to take some time and get himself into playing shape. You’re talking about a 37-year-old third baseman with a lot of mileage. We wouldn’t play him nine innings anyway. We’re not going to do that. We’ll take good care of him. He’s a guy that deserves respect. It’s easy to give him respect, he’s earned it. We love him.”

Meanwhile, Francona said news of Daisuke Matsuzaka’s leg injury while training during for last year’s WBC was ‘old news’ and the team is moving on.
