Here are your Fenway improvements 03.29.10 at 10:05 am ET
By Rob Bradford

The Red Sox have announced their latest round of Fenway Park improvements. (AP)

The Red Sox just sent out a press release announcing some of the Fenway Park improvements fans will be able to witness when Opening Day rolls around Sunday night. Per the release, here they are:

1. Left Field 1934 Seating Bowl Concrete Repair, Waterproofing and New Seats

The concrete in the Lower Left Field Seating Bowl, originally constructed in 1933-34, has been repaired and waterproofed.  As part of this project, the Dugout Seats, Field Box Seats and Loge Box Seats have been replaced with new seats and now contain cup-holders.  All Dugout Seats and Field Box Seats in these areas will also have cushioned seats.  In the Left Field Grandstand area, the original blue wooden seats (only wooden seats left in Major League Baseball) have been refurbished and fitted with self-rising mechanisms that enable the seat to retract automatically once a patron stands up.  This will allow for more room in the seating rows and improved mobility for fans entering or exiting the rows.

Additionally, a new row of Grandstand seats has been added to the back of Grandstand sections 29, 30, and 31.

The removal of the asphalt poured on cracked or broken portions of the concrete to provide temporary fixes over decades resulted in the lowering of the central cross aisle between the Field Box Seats and the Loge Box Seats in the left field portions of the 1934 bowl by approximately 8 inches. This is consistent with work performed last year to the 1912 seating bowl and will provide fans sitting in the lower rows of the Loge Boxes with improved views of the playing field.  The wheelchair and companion positions in the Loge Box were also improved this year and relocated from Section 31 to Section 32.  The sight lines from the new positions were enhanced by creating elevated platforms and positioning the companion seats next to the wheelchair locations rather than in front of them.  Several seats formerly placed in the lower aisle were removed for comfort and circulation.

All seats were refurbished and/or replaced by American Seating, the same company that has worked on the seats at Fenway Park since its inception in 1912.  The concrete repair work was completed by NER Construction of Wilmington, MA, who also completed a similar scope of work during the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 off-seasons in other areas of the ballpark.

2. New Restrooms and Concession Enhancements Behind Home Plate

In an effort to create additional space, improve circulation and enhance the fan experience, the concession stand behind Home Plate at the top of the Grandstand has been replaced by new expanded stands that offer a wider variety of food and beverage items.  Also, seven original archways, first built in 1912 and bricked over for many years, were re-opened and restored, which will improve air circulation in that area of the ballpark.

The restrooms that previously resided in this location on the Grandstand concourse have been removed; and new, larger restrooms with additional fixtures for both men and women have been constructed on a Mezzanine area positioned above Gate D, and are accessible via a new staircase that connects to the top of Grandstand Section 19 (behind home plate).  The new restrooms are more than double, in both size and number of fixtures, compared to the previously existing ones.   Additionally, two new ADA accessible family restrooms have been added in an area adjacent to the new concession stands on the Grandstand concourse towards first base.

3. Lower Third Base Concourse Improvements

Several improvements and infrastructure upgrades have been completed in the Lower Third Base concourse.  Most importantly, a new staircase has been constructed to provide improved access to/from the Gate A concourse and the Lower Third Base concourse. Enhancements have been made to the interiors of both the Visitor’s Clubhouse and grounds crew areas, including new finishes and fixtures in the manager’s office, locker room, and shower and grooming areas within the Visitor’s Clubhouse. Additionally, the locker room, meeting room and grooming areas that serve the Red Sox Grounds Crew have been refurbished.

4. New Concession Areas and Several New Menu Items

In 2010, ARAMARK and the Red Sox will introduce several new menu enhancements that offer fans even more dining options.  In addition to their classic Fenway favorites, fans will now find double cheeseburgers, grilled chicken bistro sandwiches, stromboli, and chicken parmesan and Italian meatball subs throughout the ballpark.

At the center of this year’s food and beverage upgrades is an expanded and completely renovated concession area behind home plate, featuring a newly installed brick oven for cooking freshly made pizza (served whole and by the slice).  The stand will offer many of the new items, including the chicken parmesan and Italian meatball subs, as well as Italian sausage sandwiches, Fenway Franks, hamburgers, chicken tenders & fries, and assorted snacks and desserts.

ARAMARK has also substantially expanded Fenway Park’s vegetarian menu and added more options for fans with special dietary considerations.  A new veggie burger, veggie dog, and spinach and mozzarella stromboli will join the lineup of existing vegetarian options like assorted salads, pizza, vegetarian burritos, hummus and fresh fruit cups.  A growing list of gluten free items will include kettle corn, cookies, chips, and crackers.  Fans looking for lighter fare will find assorted wraps along with deli and Panini sandwiches.

The selection of family-oriented combination value meals has also been expanded to include pizza & soda, chicken tenders & fries, burger & fries, and soup & a sandwich.  Kid-friendly novelty items such as funnel cakes, slush puppy frozen drinks, and milkshakes have been added to the menu.

Additionally, along Yawkey Way, the Boston BBQ stand will now feature a new pulled BBQ beef sandwich served with fries, and chicken tenders.

All off-season projects were designed by D’Agostino Izzo & Quirk of Somerville, MA, and overseen by Ipswich Associates of Boston, MA.

This is all wonderful propaganda, but what about the condition of the infield after it’s winter of skating-rink-additional-revenue-stream adventure?

  • http://fast-trash-removal.com Boston Junk Removal

It all sounds well and good, but you can only put so many band aids on that old building… Let’s start talking about a new park please!!!

  • Matthew

New Park???????????? What??????? are you kidding? really? NO! Fenway is Fenway… NO NEW PARK

  • Red Sox Fan in CA

    New ballpark? Not gonna happen.

As for the field after the Winter Classic? The Red Sox did mention they were going to have to re-sod the outfield due to dead grass. That wasn’t a 3 day concert….grass was covered for almost 2 months.

Let’s not worry about the park or the field. The “new” owners have proven themselves worthy of making the place better while keeping the charm intact.

I look forward to catching a Yankee game next week when I’m in town.

    Go Sox!

  • BVFAN

Can we talk about the legroom in the grandstand…especially from about 1st base and getting worse as you go down right field.

New park would be much friendlier for those of us who are on the taller side and can not afford the box seats! The sox have plenty of money, no reason they can;t build a new park. Kraft did it.

  • Jeff

The terrance right field roof box section is amazing. Best place to get a standing room ticket. Prices are great, view is good, and it is in a private area that no one else can enter

  • voice of confusion

You can put lip stick on a pig its still a pig. This place is a dump i don’t care how many times you paint it this place need to be rebuild. If this is supposed to be a class organization why not build a class stadium. I don’t want to hear about tradition if they can tear down yankee stadium you can tear down this dump. But the big difference between the yankees and the sox are the yankees care about there fans.

  • Gus_in_Melrose

BVFan hit the nail on the head..all this work done every year is all well & good, but the #1 problem with the entire ballbark is the damn old seats with ZERO legroom, as well as the seats in right field not even facing the field! Ownership will never address this because it would result in FEWER seats, and God forbid they accept less than max. revenue.

  • voice of confusion

It has nothing to do with seats. It has to do with spending money to build a new park. John Henry is as tight as a camels ass in the desert. If they build a new park they would have to spend some serious money, they are not willing to do that so they tell everybody the fans love Fenway they can’t tear it down. This team is # 1 in one thing spin no matter what the ideas are signing players, new ballpark they spin it with the best of them.

  • Dave

    Screw Fenway, new park time.

  • Pino

Old and outdated is what the ballpark is. About as uncomfortable as a seat can be for a two hundred pound man to watch a ballgame, no leg room and no arm or shoulder room. Nothing beats new, so time for an exact replica of fenway with more room for the fans and definitely a retractable roof.

  • http://WEEI Buddha

I’m willing to bet that 90% of the Save Fenway crowd has never been to one of the new parks (Camden Yards forward)to see a game. If they had, they’d get it. Fenway is better than before, but still needs to go!! We’ll be the last franchise to enter the 21st century, unfortunately. Until then, save your dough and sit in the bleachers. At least there you don’t get a back and neck ache while spending $100 + to see a game!

  • George J. Vezina

Personally, I love the old place. All those things that opponents complain about are exactly what gives the place it’s own particular character. Yes, I have been to newer parks and found all the “improvements”, water fountains, flashy lights, fireworks to be a distraction to what I went there for, to see the teams play. Ultimately however, it has become too expensive to take my family to a game anyway. Do you really think building a new park is going to decrease that? Foe now, I’ll stick with Pawtucket. A nice decent park, good prices, lots of parking and players that really hustle.

  • America’sMostBelovedBeams

My biggest wish has been that they’d replace the wooden seats with wider ones and align all of them so that they face the infield. Anyone that has sat in right field knows why I hoped for this. The seats all face out towards center. You spend 99% of the game with your head turned completely to the left so you can see the action. I spend the rest of my day turned to the right just to even it out and avoid a pinched nerve. This is besides the fact that metal framed wooden chairs are neither comfortable or good for cold/hot weather. There’s a reason why every single other ballpark got rid of them! Why in the name of God did they refurbish? Throw those wooden abominations in the trash or sell them to some enthusiasts. The ballpark and the team have the history and aura, not those freakin seats!

More urinals and $12 meatball subs are all well and good. Still, all I ask for my hard earned money is a reasonable amount of leg room for an average sized guy, enough width to sit/stand without elbowing the poor guy next to me and a view that actually faces the game. Is that so much to ask? Maybe not if they weren’t doing these renovations, but since they are …

  • john

Fenway is a wheelchair nightmare especially when in the right field accessable seats by Pesky pole. If your in a wheelchair and you have seating there make sure someone is with you.The ramps going up to that seating are quite steep. Also the walk way under the stands has its quirks also, steep uneven pavement…

In my opinion buy some of mccourts water front property and erect a new park. Fenway has used up its usefulness

  • http://WEEI Buddha

George, that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about what America’sMostBelovedBeams (love the name, by the way) is talking about; a comfortable seat that faces the action, ample sized concourses, sufficient rest room facilities, and concession stands that are designed and operated in such a way that you don’t miss 2 innings of the game getting a beer and a dog. You probably liked the old Garden better than the new one, too. And the answer to why they didn’t get rid of the wooden seats is simple. They’d have to replace them with adult sized ones, and they would lose seating capacity in the process. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out. Hey what do you want? You’re only paying $55 (if you’re lucky) for a seat that is very comfortable for your 10 year old child or grand child! Save Fenway, give me a break!! For what?? And isn’t it wonderful that lifelong Red Sox fans (I’ve been going there for 50 years) have to rationalize that settling for AAA baseball (don’t get me wrong, it has it’s place) is perfectly fine. BS!!!

  • Eugene

Been to Fenway, Angels Stadium, Dodger Stadium, Petco Park, Safeco Field and Oaklands Stadium. I would rather catch a game at Fenway any day

  • http://WEEI Buddha

Eugene, where do you usually sit at Fenway? My guess is not in the right field granstand seats or the section 1 “lower boxes”! Also, based on the parks you’ve listed, it sounds like you’re a west coast transplant. I’ve been to Oakland, too, and wouldn’t include that place in your argument, it’s older and terrible. AT&T in S.F. is another thing. That’s what I’m talking about! If you like Fenway better, for fan friendliness, you have a screw loose. That is the issue here, NOT the “charm” of the playing field.

  • michael pittsley

Get rid of Fenway Park?? What is wrong with you people? You can’t be real fans. You must be the CEO’s and V.P.’s that don’t go to a game all year. Then they make the playoffs and there you are in your seats that you just payed 5k for. Then Tim Wakefield has a bad game and you “boo” him off the field (I remember) because your not enough of a fan to realize that they wouldn’t have even got that far without him. Do NOT destroy Fenway. Do NOT destroy this game. Save Fenway for the real fans.

  • voice of reason

what a dump. go to yankee stadium that is a ballpark. The biggest difference between the yankees & the sox ownership is the yankee ownership care about there fans. The sox owners care about there wallets. If they can tear down yankee stadium you can get rid of that park too.The owners don’t want to spend the money its as simple as that so they put the famous red sox spin on it. Save fenway for the midgets, the only people that can watch a game there in comfort.

  • JimmyJames

I bet all of you complaining about Fenway seating would probably benefit from a serious diet….. Fenway is what make baseball great in Boston and why fans travel from around the world to see games at this venue.

  • LifeLongSoxFan

It’s so easy for people to say they would prefer a game at Fenway than at another park. Those are the people who come to town once a year for the ambiance. The fact is, the majority of people who actually attend more than 3 games a year, would much rather have a new building. This has nothing to do with the preservation of the park, it’s all about the fact that nobody wants it in their back yard. McCort was ready to give a sweetheart deal on land in Southie, even after he was unable to buy the team, but the residents had a friggin’ caniption, and so he took his money to LA. It will NEVER get done until someone finds the balls to get the park out of the city.

  • RICHARD G.

WHEN FENWAY TURNS 100 YRS OLD,SUFFOLK DOWNS WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE FOR A NEW BALLPARK.THE LAND WHERE IT IS NOW COULD BE HIGH RISE CONDO’S.WHAT THEY DID AT FENWAY WAS GREAT,BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR A LONG TIME ABOUT A NEW PARK.

  • david fisher

the work done to fenway over the last six years is a total waste!!!!!!!! to small to old a bad playing field !!!!!!!they will never make the money to compete this is not and never will be a high class stadium. boston needs a world class park its a world class city and a great baseball city the owners dont get it , well its to bad we have to put up with world class dump . look at the twins seven years ago they wanted them to be gone for ever , thats funny they have a great new park . isay get with it or sell to the correct owner so we can have the stadium we all want most polls are in favor of dumping the dump . see you in ny adios

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  • http://www.tarotanayraquel.com/blog/ tarot 806

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  • http://www.tarotanayraquel.com/blog/ tarot 806

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
