| Francona on D&H: Need to use ‘common sense’ with Buchholz, Beckett | 07.21.10 at 2:18 pm ET |
Terry Francona made his weekly appearance on the Dale & Holley show Wednesday afternoon, and the topics of discussion included the impending return of Clay Buchholz, the disappointing loss Tuesday night, and the progress of Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez.
Talking about Pedroia, Francona said, “He’s doing everything in his power to do two things. One, to be ready as quickly as possible. And the second thing is to drive me insane. Yeah, he’s like a caged animal. We have got to get him back in the lineup or somebody’s going to kill him.”
Following is a transcript of the interview. To listen to the entire interview visit the Dale & Holley audio on demand page.
If things go the way they should, you should have your full rotation going for the next five days for the first time since May 11.
How about that? That has a nice ring to it. I think just as important is that it’s not just getting them back in name only but getting back to where they can be productive. I think that’s something we can’t lose sight of. There’s a lot of good players out there who are trying to get back, but we can’t rush them to the point again where they’re coming back with a good name. We have to get the production that comes along with that. Again, that’s what we’re trying to do.
How do you figure out how many rehab starts is enough for a guy? Is that something you ask John Farrell or do you ask Clay Buchholz or Josh Beckett when they feel comfortable?
Well, you just named two of them, and there’s probably three or four factors. One is we certainly listen to how the pitcher feels. John Farrell, when he talks about pitching, he certainly has my ear. But again, what’s just best for our team. If you rush somebody out there before they’re ready, not only are they going to have a tough time competing, but they’re going to put a strain on your bullpen, which you don’t really want to do either. So you just try to balance everything and then we talk to our players and try to come to the right conclusion.
What is your philosophy on using Jonathon Papelbon in a tie game at home vs. on the road?
We will use him at home in a tie game all the time. On the road, very rarely does that happen. There has to be a day off or something like that where he hasn’t pitched in a long time. Like last night for instance, when they had [Andrew] Bailey in the game, he’s going to go two. You bring Pap in with a tie game, you’re hoping that he goes two innings. That’s not the best way. We need to hold him back. We had plenty of pitchers last night. We need to hold him back. If we use Pap and we use [Daniel] Bard and we go through our whole bullpen and then we finally take a lead and we can’t save the game, boy I’d be kicking myself.
Would it be different if it was later in the season?
Well, I don’t know, Michael. What’s the situation? Was he pitching the day before? How many games out? You’re going to lose him for the next day, possibly two so it depends on all the circumstances. I mean there’s a lot to think about. It’s not just cut and dry. You have to figure who you’re facing. There’s a ton of decisions that go into it. It’s not that cut and dry. I can’t give you an answer based on the month.
Well I guess my point is as you get closer to the playoffs, it might be more worth it to go for it in that situation.
I’m not quite sure where we’re going with this. There are certainly times when we try to monitor our relievers’ innings so we can lean on them when we need to. You do that too much early in the season, you can’t. I think we’ve proven that in the past. We’ve gone to Pap. We went to [Keith] Foulke. I think they had enough in the tank to get the job done. You do things like that in July, you’re going to run the tank dry. You just can’t do that.
Did you see the highlights or the end of the Dodgers-Giants game last night?
I saw the highlights. When we lose, you guys have heard this, you’ve heard me say this a lot of times. When we lose, I either don’t watch SportsCenter or I want every team to lose, and I have figured out how to make that second one work.
Then, I guess you know where we’re going with this. Giants manager Bruce Bochy called out Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly for making two trips to the mound. As a manger, I assume that you know this rule as opposed to a hitting coach who might not.
Those are the things where you wake up, and it’s kind of like a nightmare. A lineup card snafu or walking off the mound. Yeah, those are things where you have to be careful what you wish for. I saw that and was like, “Oh, jeez. That’s your worst nightmare.” You’ve got [Jonathan] Broxton walking off the mound. He throws 100, and before you know it, you’re team’s walking off the field because they lost. That’s got to be a terrible feeling.
Jayson Stark was on earlier and said that that’s not exactly the spirit of the rule. What do you think?
I think they have to have rules, and for an umpire to enforce rules, the way it’s been explained to, whether it’s a technicality or not, that was a second trip because he left the mound and he broke contact, he left the dirt and then he went back. So again, if you’re going to enforce rules, I guess you have to enforce rules.
Jed Lowrie met with the club out in Oakland. Have you guys made any decisions on when he’ll be added to the roster?
He’s added today. He’s actually going to play shortstop today. We designated Ryan Shealy for assignment. The other move to get Buchholz back on was we optioned Dustin Richardson back to Pawtucket.
It seems like with all the injuries Marco Scutaro has fought through that he should’ve gotten a few other days off before this.
Yeah, we probably should have done a better job. I was going to give him a day off the last homestand, the day game, but he talked me out of it. I was kind of kicking myself afterward because I thought he really could have used it. But we’ve made him take it today, and with a quick turnaround, I think it will serve him well. I need to be careful. That’s probably the one area where I think I’ve maybe reached a little too far. I think sometimes there’s some obvious reasons, but still, that doesn’t help. It’s good. We have Jed here now so he fill in a little bit there. That should really help us.
How frustrating was it seeing the four run lead disappear last night?
We talk so much, when [Tim Wakefield] pitches. … I say the same thing, and I guess it’s because it happens, you’re going to see stolen bases, past balls, wild pitches, but you look up normally, in the sixth or seventh inning, and you have a chance to win. And that’s basically what it was, last night all those things happened in a five-hitter span and it accounted for four runs. They strung them together, everything happened. … They double stole, we did a great job of holding Coco [Crisp] the first time he was on second. Then, once we got the out he kind of forgot about him and they double stole. There’s a lot of things that happened. Coco, he had him tied up in knots and he fights one off to right. It was kind of a crazy inning.
Did you have any problem sending David Ortiz when he got thrown out at the plate?
No, I would have sent him too. Sometimes guys are going to be out. It would be really unfair for me to come on the radio the next day and go, “Oh, [Tim Bogar] shouldn’t have sent him,” when I’m in the dugout screaming go. I thought it was a good decision, I actually thought he was going to make it. I’m not too sure he didn’t make it, but again, I would have sent him, they made a perfect relay throw.
Did you ever get an explanation on the balk?
To be honest with you, I was so mad and I was thinking of the whole time if I wanted to walk [Kurt] Suzuki, that I wasn’t listening, I was just buying time. I knew he wasn’t going to reverse the call. He was explaining his rear end off and I had no idea because I was so mad. … Actually if you look on the tape I walked away right in the middle of his explanation.
Doesn’t it seem cyclical the way they call these balks?
Bob [Davidson] has seen balks in my twenty years that no one else has ever seen. It’s sort of become a running joke in the league, he has far and away lead the league in balk calls. Like some hitters are pull hitters, some umpires are balk umpires.
Are there any restrictions with Buchholz and Beckett?
Well, I think we need to use some common sense. I think one thing we certainly look for as they get into the game is to make sure they are staying in their delivery. If they start coming out of their delivery, that means they are starting to getting a little bit taxed, a little tired, and that’s where we worry a little bit. As long as they’re doing that, they’re in great shape. They’ve been working hard, and again, throwing inning after inning is a little bit different, it’s hard to replicate that. We’ll keep an eye on them.
Was it Beckett’s struggles that lead to him being sidelined?
Oh, no, he ended up getting hurt. If you look at some of his outings, some of his outings his stuff was un-hittable, and then something would go wrong and it would go fast. He’s had a few hiccups this year, but no, he had that incident in New York, and really set him back. And us knowing Beckett like we do, we want him to go out to the mound and feel like he’s indestructible. Because when he feels that way, he’s one of the best pitchers in the game. So that’s why we tried to use caution, take it slow enough where when we get this guy back, he can go out and be the Beckett that we need.
How is Dustin Pedroia progressing?
You know what, he actually took [batting practice] on the field yesterday with that boot on. He’s doing everything in his power to do two things. One, to be ready as quickly as possible. And the second thing is to drive me insane. Yeah, he’s like a caged animal. We have got to get him back in the lineup or somebody’s going to kill him. John Farrell actually told him yesterday he was going to stuff him in the waste basket. We got to get him back on the field, or he’s going to lose his mind.
Can you give us a sense of what Pedroia is like in the clubhouse?
When he’s playing, and he’s drinking all these red bulls, he’s got all this energy, he can run it off out on the field. Now, he’s sitting in the dugout, he’s drinking red bull and he’s talking. Obviously I am being a little facetious, he’s great to have around. He’s full of energy, but he needs to play. He’s so competitive and he doesn’t know what to do with it, so he just sits in the dugout and makes stupid remarks. We got to get him back out on the field.
Do you think some of the activity is helping him physically or emotionally?
Both. I think that when he gets that boot off he’ll come real quick because he’s doesn’t have to get his hands back in shape. He’s taking grounders, he’s throwing, he’s hitting. But I also think it’s helping his sanity, I don’t think there’s any way around that. He’s also been in the pool, [Jason Varitek] has done the same thing. These guys have all tried to do as much as they can without setting their injury back, so when they do get the go-ahead, they will be ready to play as fast as they can.
It sounds as they Victor Martinez has turned a corner.
I agree with that. I think that’s the way it always is. You kind of level off, then you take a jump and then you level off a little bit. It was a nice big jump the last couple of days, he was able to hit right handed, he was able to get his glove on. He actually played catch out to about 200 feet. The next thing we’re looking for is to see how aggressive he can be catching the ball with that catchers mitt. That’s going to be the next big step, because right now he’s doing great on everything else.
Why don’t you ever safety squeeze in late innings?
Well, my thought there kind of is, if it’s first and third and you have less than two outs, it’s a great situation to hit. If the guy can probably get a bunt down, or if you have confidence can get a bunt down, more than likely they are the guys that don’t normally hit into a double play. They’re your faster guys on the team. You don’t want to take the bat out of Youkilis or Ortiz or Beltre, those types of guys, anyway. On the flip side, if you have somebody on third base, like an Ortiz or a catcher, that safety squeeze doesn’t work. You saw [Tampa Bay Rays] try to do it against us, they had a first and third potential big rally, Youkilis comes in and makes the play at home and snuffs out the rally. Sometimes you just have to let your players play. Sometimes I think the best thing a manager can do is get out of the way and let good players play.
How do you feel about the squeeze play in general?
I’m not a big fan of it, I never have been. I think players like the fact that you show confidence in them, that they can drive the run in. I know there’s a time and place for it sometimes, I would just as soon let our guys drive the run in. If we can’t drive that run in with less than two outs we’re in trouble.
What do you think of Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder?
No, I can’t [discuss wanting to acquire them], I’d get in trouble, I like them both. Ryan Braun, when I saw him at the home run hitting derby a couple of years ago, and I remember making a comment to John Farrell, he had as a right-handed hitter, the closest leverage that I had seen since [Manny Ramirez]. And when Manny was really going good, he could leverage that ball. It could get deep and he could drive it, and that’s what he did so well. I haven’t seen him play a lot because he’s in the other league, but I was so impressed with his swing. Prince Fielder, I don’t think people realize how athletic and how much he plays every day. He’s not 6-foot-6, 210 pounds. He’s still some kind of player.
