Olney on D&C: Brewers’ Hart a possibility for Sox 07.22.10 at 9:21 am ET
By Matt Noonan

Buster Olney

ESPN’s Buster Olney joined Dennis & Callahan on Thursday to discuss the current rumors and speculations regarding the Red Sox. With the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, Olney discussed a few names that the Sox may explore and talked about the possibility of the club picking up David Ortiz’ option in 2011.

On if general manager Theo Epstein has to make a decision to be a buyer, seller or an obtainer:

“I do think he has that decision, and I do think that is kind of what they’ve been waiting on. Give it more time to decide whether to pour resources into the 2010 team to make sure they are not in a situation where they are pouring paint down a hole. … And it’s interesting because the Phillies are in the same situation where they are kind of sitting there saying, ‘You know what, lets see if we can add guys who cannot only help us, maybe get back into this thing in 2010, but guys who can help us next year.’ That’s why a Corey Hart might be a good fit for the Red Sox, and I know yesterday activity around the Brewers outfielder really picked up a lot more.

“And maybe if they start to fall out of it a little bit more, maybe they get less interested in a guy like Scott Downs, the reliever from Toronto who is a free agent at the end of this year. Go for the guys who have four to five years of service time rather than go for players who are going to be eligible for free agency in the fall.”

On if the Sox will be fine with just having their injured players return and not making a trade:

“I also think another factor is they have to look at the landscape of their division and say, ‘You know what, even if we add something, we spend resources to improve the 2010 team, bottom line is we maybe chasing the two best teams in baseball.’ That’s a dynamic they have to deal with and I think the GMs in the other divisions really don’t have to worry about.”

On the possibility of David DeJesus joining the Red Sox:

“He’s certainly an attractive player and I know the Red Sox like him, he fits their style, he can play different outfield positions, he gives them some flexibility. But there’s no question, they are going to be bidding against other teams, including Jed Hoyer’s San Diego Padres, for DeJesus, so they might not necessarily land him. I do think that Corey Hart, along the same lines of DeJesus, makes sense, but again, it’s going to be a bidding situation.”

On what the Red Sox will do with David Ortiz’ option year in 2011:

“Its interesting, because I’ve read the papers in Boston and they’ve talked about how it doesn’t seem like there is any chance they will pick up that option. And I was talking with general managers of other teams in the last week and they were like, ‘Wow.’ If he finishes the year with like 30-35 homers and he winds up driving in 90 runs, overall, despite that slow start, despite what he has done recently, if overall his numbers are good, why wouldn’t you pick up that option year, especially if you’re the Red Sox and you have a high payroll? That’s what I would get if he hits late.

“Now, maybe they are looking at a situation where they probably want to re-sign Victor Martinez for less money. He certainly would be a natural DH. There will be other possibilities out there, like Adam Dunn, guys who are younger, so I don’t know. I bet you the Red Sox are in the fence right now as they go down the stretch, and they’re going to want to see what they want to see. Let’s face it, they were on the cusp of releasing David Ortiz earlier this year, so they certainly had their doubts about what he’s doing.”

On the chances of Victor Martinez returning to the Red Sox next season:

“I think he stays there if David Ortiz absolutely goes into a slide in the second half, because I don’t think there’s any question they want to turn the page and get a new catcher in there.”

i,d don,t see the need to go after anything but starting catching, vic is taylor made for 1b, put youk back to 3b, beltre dh, do what you gotta do to get ianetta here, the kid would be a good fit!move ortiz next year.

Southpaw is not only illiterate, but also makes zero sense. Please produce factual proof that you A) Can read and write above a 1st grade level…and B)Have actually watched an entire baseball game in your life.

    Beltre to DH???

1st of all, there is about a 10% chance he’ll even choose to re-sign….and even they do pay him, he is one of the better defenders in all the game when healthy…and Vic (as much as I enjoy watching him hit)….well lets just say he is “challenging” to watch play any defensive position.

You are a moron of epic proportions Southpaw….an absolute dimwit.

    Your friends,

    Corky and Doug Flutie’s kid

Cameron will have one year left on his contract… Use him as your fourth outfielder next year and get Hart! Dump Hall and use Jed as your utility infielder. Pick up Ortiz’s contract, resign Martinez and get Ianneta. It’s time to see the Captain retire.

The above changes give you the bext flexibiluty and insurance in case Ortiz’s Next Year April/May slide continues into June/July. Tek gets it… He knows he is at the end and maybe he will take a player coach contract.

They better sign Beltre to a long term deal before he hits Free Agency or we will see him in Pin Stripes!

  • Dano

Well Tony…I don’t entirely disagree your ideas. I don’t think they’ll simply “pick up” Papi’s option. A more likely scenario…if they decide to bring him back…is to sign him to a new two year deal for similar money. The market for DH’s has changed. They can probably get a number of guys to fill that role for half his present contract. I think he knows that and has shown interest in staying right here. I’m all for getting Iannetta…for a fair price. I’m not as quick to dump Tek however. I like the additional depth of keeping Victor available to play first and even DH at times. Three catchers would add some nice flexibility and depth. One more thing…bring back Beltre too.

I personally think this team would have been very good and would be sitting pretty had all these guys not gotten hurt. I really don’t think wholesale change is needed.

    Book him Dano… I agree.

In this grand scheme of things you actually receive a B+ just for hard work. Exactly where you lost us ended up being on the facts. You know, they say, details make or break the argument.. And that couldn’t be more true at this point. Having said that, let me reveal to you precisely what did work. The text is certainly very convincing which is most likely why I am taking the effort in order to comment. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, although I can certainly notice the jumps in logic you come up with, I am not necessarily convinced of exactly how you seem to connect the details which inturn produce your final result. For now I will, no doubt subscribe to your position but trust in the near future you connect your facts better.
