| Crasnick on D&H: Sox front office needs patience | 07.23.10 at 12:32 pm ET |
ESPN baseball writer Jerry Crasnick joined the Dale & Holley show Friday morning and talked about the upcoming trade deadline. Like many of his other baseball writing brethren, Crasnick noted that the Red Sox will need to be patient before they can decide what type of role they will play in this season’s trade market.
“For a team like the Red Sox, they have to wait until the very end to throw up the flag, so I think that’s what’s going to happen,” Crasnick said. “They’ve had guys hurt. They’re on a tough trip right now. They really have to see where they stand at the end of this trip and then decide, ‘Look, are we going to pull the trigger on something momentous? Or maybe could we do some selective selling?’ ”
Crasnick, who will be headed down to Cooperstown next weekend to cover the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, also discussed the possibility of Johnny Damon entering the Hall of Fame.
“He ran the bases. He played on winning teams, and if he got to 3,000 hits, I, to be honest with you, would have a hard time keeping him out,” Crasnick said.
What follows are more highlights from the interview. To hear the entire interview, go to the Dale & Holley audio on demand page.
Isn’t it possible, with all of the teams in contention, that we’ll see less dealing at the deadline rather than more?
It’s really difficult. People tend to try to read these things. I think usually it’s going to be disappointing. It always seems to be a little bit less than people expect. The other thing this year obviously is the economic situation and how many big contracts teams are prepared to take on, and that’s always a big factor, too.
If you’re Theo Epstein, does it matter to you if you’re three games back or nine games back at the deadline? Does that affect if you make any moves?
It would to me. That’s why I think sometimes teams don’t know quite where they stand, and that extra week is critical. For a team like the Red Sox, they have to wait until the very end to throw up the flag, so I think that’s what’s going to happen. They’ve had guys hurt. They’re on a tough trip right now. They really have to see where they stand at the end of this trip and then decide, “Look, are we going to pull the trigger on something momentous? Or maybe could we do some selective selling?”
You’ve said in the past that you’re underwhelmed by the bullpen market out there right now.
Yeah, there’s not really a whole lot. … What does it tell you when Cincinnati desperately needs a reliever and they sign 41-year-old Russ Springer and resurrect Jason Isringhausen? Short of bringing back Dick Drago and Tom Burgmeier, I don’t know how much further we can get into the past on those guys. That’s sort of where teams are. I think they either think, “Look, we’ll go for either an old workhorse and hope that he has a couple months left in him,” or maybe, “We have a really strong-armed young kid at Triple-A, and we’ll give him a shot.” Nobody wants to give up their best prospect for a Kevin Gregg or a Scott Downs.
In the history of baseball, there has never been less of a fanfare for a big-time milestone like there is right now for Alex Rodriguez’ 600th career homer.
Yeah, this thing is like, God, you don’t hear or see anything about this. People are just tired of these things. [For Barry] Bonds, we had milestone fatigue. People just roll their eyes now when they see it. You know it’s only going to get worse because when he starts to pass [Willie] Mays and [Babe] Ruth and all these guys, then it’s really going to cut people to the core.
Johnny Damon has a chance to reach 3,000 hits in his career if he plays two or three more years. There are arguments for and against putting him in the Hall of Fame. Where do you stand?
Bobby Abreu’s a guy who comes to mind for me. I saw him in Philly a lot. He wasn’t even a guy you thought of as the best guy on his team. He was never a guy you said, “Boy, I’m not going to go the concession stand because Abreu’s up.” … To me, Damon, yeah I can see what you’d say about him, but man, you look at his numbers for a dozen years, 100-plus runs every single year. Part of it is a style type thing. He ran the bases. He played on winning teams, and if he got to 3,000 hits, I, to be honest with you, would have a hard time keeping him out.
