Lackey: Boos ‘won’t be forgotten, for sure’ 07.28.10 at 2:42 am ET
By Alex Speier

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Red Sox starter John Lackey, after his first outing in Angel Stadium as a visiting player, made no secret of his displeasure in the face of the wave of boos that greeted him at his former home ballpark. Lackey (10-5), who earned the victory on the strength of 7 2/3 innings in which he allowed two runs on seven hits while matching a season-high with 124 pitches, admitted that there were hurt feelings based on his reception by the fans of a franchise for whom he went 102-71 with a 3.81 ERA over eight seasons.

“Definitely heard a lot of [the boos]. … That won’t be forgotten, for sure,” said Lackey. “Nobody wants to get booed like that. Scoreboard talks the loudest.”

Lackey earned the praise of his teammates for his outstanding performance in a setting that was potentially emotionally charged.

“That’s what happens man. Good players always go to the top of their game when they are facing their ex-team,” said David Ortiz. “Lackey, man, he was on. It was on.”

With his win, Lackey became the third pitcher in the majors to reach 10 or more victories in each of the last eight seasons, joining CC Sabathia and Derek Lowe. Lackey is the only pitcher to accomplish that feat solely in the American League.

And JD going to retire, when??? Not soon enough if you ask me.

  • Scott Remy

Who is asking you, Anne. He remains one of the best corner outfielders in the games when all factors are tabulated. He is consistently above average offensively and plays right field in such a way that you will not see the spectacular plays because he gets to most balls by instinct, not because he misread a fly ball like Ellsbury often does and has to make to great catch. Fortunately, he is capable of these plays but will break down at an early age because of the falls he experiences.

Personally, I hope JD stays for another year or two. He is a class teammate and a great calming personality in the dugout to temper the excitement. JD always has things in proper perspective. Yes, he will fail. Most good players fail 70% of the time, hence the .300 AVG plateau. He is failing about 74% of the time right now and in that perspective is not too bad. No, JD should not retire. He is one of the unsung heroes of the Sox this year and a few previous as well and has often gone through periods when it seemed he was the only one sees the ball well.

Please consider easing up on him and root for the Sox as a whole and not blow out the candle of the one or two you do not understand.

I agree with Scott, root for the Sox as a whole because this is a team not a bunch of guys who show up on the field. Each player will have an off day but they do their best each day and that is what matters.

Hey Scott…Anne’s right on the money, and she has the right to express her opinion, so lose the “who’s asking you” crap. Her opinion is no more or less valid than yours. Or do you think because your name is Remy you have some special status?

“He remains one of the best corner outfielders in the games when all factors are tabulated.”? When you did your tabulating, did you figure in the fact how many times he’s been a scratch for a freaking hangnail? There isn’t much to “understand”…you just look at the lineup card and “understand” that Drew is just as likely to not be on it as he is to be ready to play. He makes an awful lot of money for a part-time player…money better spent on someone who will actually play 140 games a year. Guess how many time he’s done that…3, in 12 years. He’s a DL trip waiting to happen.

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve got hit the nail on the head. Your concept is excellent; the problem is something that not sufficient individuals are talking intelligently about. I’m very comfortable that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something regarding this.
