An early Red Sox report card 09.10.10 at 6:35 am ET
By Lou Merloni

Dustin Pedroia's season was an example of how uneven a good part of the Red Sox' 2010 campaign proved to be. (AP)

I know that the season isn’t officially over yet, but I think its time to reflect on the 2010 campaign.

I’m really not putting much stock into the remainder of the year. If Adrian Beltre or Clay Buchholz struggle down the stretch, will that change your opinion on the type of years they had? If John Lackey or Josh Beckett are lights out the last three weeks, does that mean they’ve had good years? No, I don’t think so. So here it is, the not quite end of the season report card:

Victor Martinez: B-

Missing five weeks obviously hurt, but Vic is still one of the best offensive catchers in the game. Defensively, he really struggled early in the year.  It was tough to watch at times, but if you’ve been watching lately, his throwing has improved. He’s now thrown out 23 percent of would be base runners this year. Given where he was in April and May, that’s quite an accomplishment.

Jason Varitek: C+

I would have given Tek a higher grade but its awfully tough to give a ‘B’ to a guy that has missed as much time as he has. I think that the one thing that Tek proved this year is that he can still produce when healthy. He will continue next year to be one of the best backup catchers in the game, if he can stay healthy.

David Ortiz: B-

After another slow start, Papi has put together a good year. Let’s face it, these days there aren’t as many guys in the league that hit 30 HR’s. He became the type of hitter that pitchers had to be worried about again. I don’t expect his numbers to jump in the future.  At this point, he is what he is.

Kevin Youkilis: B

Youk was having another very good year for himself before his season ending thumb surgery. His grade is as low as it is because he missed the final two months of the year. To me, his injury was the nail in the coffin for the 2010 Boston Red Sox.

Dustin Pedroia: C+

This is a tough one. Pedey had a good April, a bad May and a very good June. He is by no means a ‘C+’ player, but when you miss half the year that’s what can you expect. He’s the leader of this team. That’s why his injury may have been the biggest blow.

Marco Scutaro: B

Where would the Sox have been without Scutaro leading off this year?  The downside this year was his defense. But keep in mind what this guy played through. First, is was a herniated disc in his neck. Now we find out that he is playing — for some reason — with a torn labrum. His arm came up short this year, no question, but it had a lot to do with injuries.

Adrian Beltre: A-

He is the co-MVP of this team, (see Clay Buchholz). Offensively, he was an absolute machine, carrying this lineup at times. The only reason I didn’t give him an ‘A’ was because defensively, I was a little disappointed. Too many errors and, to be honest with you, I think that the official scorer was extremely generous at times.

Billy Hall: B

I’m not sure what I expected from Hall this year, but I can tell you it wasn’t 17 home runs. He played all over the field. His defense might have been a little shaky at times, but what can you expect when you are playing a different position every night. His versatility was a bonus and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back here next year

Jed Lowrie: C-

His grade might have been a lot higher if he didn’t miss four months with mono. Jed has shown that when he is on the field, he can produce. The biggest question is, can he stay on the field? If he didn’t have a history of injuries, Jed may very well be your starting shortstop next year. But if you’re Theo, can you really count on him?

Mike Cameron: C-

I just can’t give this guy a ‘D’. His performance on the field wasn’t the best, but I know what he had to go through just to get on the field. We didn’t see the best of Cameron. He didn’t get good jumps on the ball in center. He didn’t have that explosiveness in his bat. But both were greatly affected by his ab injury.

Jacoby Ellsbury: D

It was a lost year for Jacoby. I still think that he is a very good player and will be in the future for the Sox. I’m one that doesn’t want to see the Sox trade this guy. The only reason I didn’t give him an ‘F’ for the year is because I think that he may have exposed this medical staff and in the end, that may be the best thing for this organization.

J.D. Drew: D+

It was a bad year for J.D. He flew under the radar because of all the other issues that this club had, but in the end this team needed Drew to step up and have a good year with all of the injuries and he just didn’t. One more year!!

Darnell McDonald: B

Darnell came out of nowhere for this team and they needed him. He played all three outfield positions while providing some offensive punch. I only hope that he has finely proved to everyone that he can play in this league.

Mike Lowell: D+

Everything went wrong for Mike this year. He started off in April upset about his playing time and found himself on the disabled list later in the year. Then when Kevin Youkilis went on the DL himself, he finally had his opportunity and didn’t come through. If this is Mike’s last year playing, we should remember him more for what he once was for this organization; a player that always played the game the right way. He was a clutch hitter and a big reason why this team won a World Series in 2007.

Daniel Nava: B-

Another great story this year. Daniel showed that he can hit big league pitching, even though I like him more from the left side. He will add great depth for this team next year. I’m not sure he breaks camp with this team, but he will be called upon again in 2011.

Jon Lester: B+

Overall, Jon had a very good year. But the reason why I didn’t give him a ‘A’ was because I think that there’s still more there. He is one of the best pitchers in the American League and I think that its just a matter of time before he wins a Cy Young. But, there were times that I think within the game, he couldn’t stop the bleeding. Still, the sky is the limit for Jon Lester.

Clay Buchholz: A

Co-MVP of the team (See Adrian Beltre). We all knew the “stuff” was there, we just weren’t sure he could ever harness it.  Well, he did. He will be in the Cy Young conversation and rightfully so. Clay matured right in from of our eyes. Strikeout totals were down but that helped him get deeper in games. It also allowed him to have “easier” innings. This team is in good shape with Clay and Lester on top of their rotation for years to come.

Josh Beckett: D

Not as bad as Ellsbury, but this was a lost year for Beckett. It didn’t start off well in April and didn’t get much better when he came off the DL in July. I think that fans should hold judgment until we see what we get from him next year, but there is no question this was an awful year for Josh. The days of being an ace may be behind him, but I still love the fact that he is on this staff. He will be better next year.

John Lackey: C-

Let’s face it, expectations were high for Lackey this year because of the contract. Too many hits and too many walks. But he did give this team innings. He just never had a “great” outing. We expected to see a few games in which he went 8 innings, no runs. That just didn’t happen. Its a different game when half of your starts are in the AL East. I expect more from him next year.

Daisuke Matsuzaka: C

Do we ever really know what to expect from Daisuke? He had his moments this year where you would start to think that he has it figured out. Then we would only get even more frustrated when we realized that he is what he is.

Jonathan Papelbon: B-

OK, so the guy wasn’t a lock in the ninth this year, but he was still pretty good.  We have to stop comparing him to what he was two or three years ago. He has to find consistency with his mechanics to get back to where he was. He just looks like a different pitcher when he has an off night. The split can look dominant at times and then the next night, maybe even the next hitter, he leaves it up and it gets hammered. If he pisses you off, deal with it because he will be here next year

Daniel Bard: A

There is no doubt that he is the closer of the future, but he may have to wait another year for that chance.  He has shown that he can be dominant in the eighth, but the ninth can be a different animal. I think he’ll be just fine. When he has his slider working, hitters have no shot

Manny Delcarmen: C-

He just never turned into the eighth inning guy that he thought he was. A change of scenery will be good for Manny, I’m just not sure if Colorado is the place for a fly ball pitcher. This team really needed him to step up and get some key outs and he just didn’t.

Hideki Okajima: D+

Oki lost it. He’s always been a guy that pitched like he had 96 mph in the tank. He challenged hitters by spotting his 87 mph heater in. That would set up his change away or curve ball. Those pitches also made his fastball look like it was 96. But he just couldn’t locate it like he did in the past. I’m sure a lot of it was confidence. It takes a lot of guts to pitch in with his fastball, but that’s what he did when he was good.

Ramon Ramirez: D+

How many times did he come into the game in the ninth with a five or six run lead only to give it up and force Tito to bring in Pap? What happened to this guy. Last year he was dominant the first three months. Since then, he’s been scary. Good luck San Fran. You can have him.

Scott Atchison: B-

The Darnell McDonald/Billy Hall of the bullpen. He was up and down early in the year, but once he settled in, and this is scary, he became one of the more consistent pitchers out of the pen for the Sox. The guy throws strikes and sometimes that’s all you need out of the pen.

Felix Doubront: B-

I thought they got a lot more from Felix then they ever thought this early in his career. He showed that he can start in this league as well a viable option out of the pen. I hope they put him back in the rotation next year down in Triple-A. He will be an asset as their sixth starter. If they don’t need him to start, then they can put him out in the ‘pen like they did this year.

Terry Francona: A-

I think that Tito did his best work this year keeping this clubhouse together. It was tough on him in April. Veterans weren’t happy about their roles and Tito did his best to keep it from getting out of control early. When the injury bug hit, his hands were tied. His bullpen was awful. That’s never a good thing because that’s when you get second guessed for making moves or not making moves. Nobody ever stepped up other than Bard and Pap. But the reason why its not an ‘A’ is because there were times when I did question how that pen was being used. I thought that if he protected Bard a little more early in the year, he could cut him loose when he needed him later in the year.

Theo Epstein: B+

I know that people want to blame Theo for everything this year, but I really believe that he put together a championship team. The injuries were just too much to overcome.  I just wish that back in late June, early July when he realized that Mike Cameron was not going to be able to make it through the rest of the year, that he went out and picked up another outfielder. If you like David DeJesus in mid-July, why didn’t you like him in June before he got hurt? Also, you can look at Kerry Wood.  It was only a cash transaction. No prospects. This bullpen needed help and I understand that once you got later in the year the writing was on the wall, but maybe if he could have gotten a reliever earlier it might have made a difference. I also believe, that if this team was within a game or two at the deadline, Theo would have made a move, but his hands were tied. Would you have invested in this team? That’s not quitting on a team, that’s just being realistic.

thanks Lou for a realistic and fair assessment of this years team. Given all the above I would like to categorically state that I like[d] enjoyed this team for the heart and resiliency they brought to each game. They never quit and they always played hard. Tho I, like everyone else, root for a playoff/ world series outcome I can enjoy our team and season if we have a good team with quality players. The 2010 Red Sox gave us all ,of that albeit frustrating as well.
it’s Baseball, you’re supposed to enjoy the game and season especially if your team isn’t the Pirates or Royals or… well you get my drift.
ps: thanx for being on the big show, sometimes you are the only reason I can listen to it.
Be well, Richard in Maine .. [Portland]

  • Tom C.

Shouldn’t Ellsbury get an “incomplete” like they do in school?(haha). I also agree that they should not trade him and believe that we still don’t know how good he can actually be. Unfortunately we were all robbed of seeing him play and develop further this year. I also give him credit for having the guts to speak up about the medical staff and think it will benefit the players in the long run. Everybody thought it was a big joke at the time, but it turns out he was probably right. Good for him.

How is Drew a D+ and Cameron a C- when Drew has better numbers through *way* more games played?

  • reg1uic

As usual Lou sidesteps things, comments like “he is what he is” to me that means I don’t want to say anything bad (honest) we were looking for an expert opinion and all we got is something that we already know. sorry Lou

  • Mets Fan

    @anon

    Comparing Cameron and Drew stats?

You also have to compare their salaries.

That is how you give Drew a D+ and Cameron a C-.

  • Dale Sams

Drew will return just about exactly the 14mill in value this year. Mike Cameron is at -1.2 mill. That’s right NEGATIVE 1.2mill.

  • Judy

It’s not Mike Lowell’s or Mike Cameron’s fault that the Red Sox chose to play them over healthier alternatives, but it doesn’t change that their performances were bad enough to hurt the team’s performance instead of helping it. Drew makes less than twice as much as Cameron, and provided much more than twice the value, just by providing above average offense and defense for an AL outfielder. Cameron was unable to do either well enough to have been worth a roster spot at any point during the season, he should have had surgery in the spring and maybe then he’d have had a chance to come back and help late in the season, that probably isn’t his fault, either. Meanwhile, Lowell’s demonstrated quite clearly that his career is over, and probably should have been over more than a year ago. Again, not his fault, but he’s never been in any physical condition to get regular playing time at any point during this season.

  • Mets Fan

    @Dale Sams

    J.D Drew – .254 BA, 18HR, 60RBI, 62R = $14 million value?

  • Dale Sams

    @ Mets Fan

    http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1152&position=OF#value

By the end of the year (unless they shut him down) he’ll be a lot closer to 14 mill then Mike Cameron will be close to…well..anything.

  • Jake

    What happen to Wakefield?

  • nbsoxfan

Are you kidding me? even review what you write to compare? I don’t like the underachieving Drew much but you’re saying he deserves a lessor grade than Delcarman, Lowrie, Cameron, Veritek, and Lackey, the same as Oki, Ramon, and Lowell, and is just ahead of Ellsbury? Come on now!!

  • Mets Fan

    @Dale Sams

    Stats I don’t see on fangraph…

Cameron efforts to play while critical injured.

Drew efforts to play while questionably injured.

  • Tom

Papelbon and Drew are in the same boat. We counted on them and they both choked. Sure Drew and Pap are talented enough for third place but I want a winner who steps up when it counts vs. padding stats against the Orioles. What a let down Lackey was as well. How was he the Ace of any staff. Beckett is undependable as well. Lester and Bucholz are the only ones we can count on for consistency right now. Let’s cut our losses and try some new blood. Our outfield is a disaster, even with Hall and Mcdonald, the only reason you rated them high is because you expected nothing from them. I expect a championship team and we need consistent hitters like Youk. Even Pedroia was not the same prior to the injury. The sox have been painful to watch all season. Bard is our future closer and the future should start now. Lets take Pap’s money and spend it on some hitters. Big Papi earned another 2 yr deal. Martinez is going to ask for more than he’s worth (14 hrs, come on, Hall has 17). We need to revamp this whole team around the guys that matter, (Lester, Bucholz, Bard, Youk, Petey, Scoutaro, Beltre, Ellsbury, Ortiz (for now).

  • Tito Fancona

Lester a B+???? Are you kidding me? Not very consistent this year
and certainly not an Ace. Bard has 6 blown saves and he gets an A?
    B at best.

  • Theo

    Not a Rhodes scholar….

  • mongo

Merloni you are way off on this one dude…how can you give pedroia and the rest of the waking wounded bad grades when they havent played in quite a while….the injured all get incompletes in my grade book

  • Mike

    Come on Lou. .258, with 7 and 16 for Tek—and that’s “producing.”

  • dano_in_nj

Good article, but you have to also compare to what else is available, after all, our expectations over 10 years were expanded by ‘roids. Give Tito and Theo A’s, because no one could have predicted season-ending injuries to both of our young stars, as well as 2 of 3 outfielders, and 3 rotation pitchers. And the bullpen sucked! Drew is fine in comparison to what else is out there, especially on defense with his offense. Ortiz is good again, given the new calculus. Lackey and Wakefield were both inning-eaters. Beckett and Matsuzaka take the C’s and provide ?? for the offseason… All I know is that you have Lester and Buch as 1 and 2 pitchers, and no one is available to be the 3 pitcher. This needs to change. Re-up Wake. Can we trade Dice-K for a 3 pitcher? What does Seattle have there? The young guys provide promise behind this same team for next year, let’s give it one more ride!

  • andrew

    where’s kalish

  • Dave Lorange

Man- you gotta love Tito’s remarks – right from the hip….One of the best don’t pick up a bat with him…we were so siked with the pitchers at the begining of the season, “How strong they are” How deep we can go” but hell they let us down. No Problem the team is still one of the best, been withthem since 1955…Go Nation

  • Ben

I have a nit pick here and there – but, on the whole, Lou’s comments are insightful and correct. I thought that, with what he was given, Tito did an absolutely masterful job this year this year. Also, I an thankful for Theo’s refusal to give up top-tier prospects for mid-tier performers. It has been an extremely difficult year for Red Sox Nation!

  • jason bay

Scutaro a B? He is probably the worst fielding SS in baseball. Isn’t fielding part of the process? As far as Drew’s year
You got basically what he is a overpayed stiff. One of the worst Rightfielders in the American league. How do you give a B+ to a GM who signs a over the hill CF, Lackey that huge contract and he did what he always has done, be pretty average. And sign Beckett when he really didn’t have too. Plus when the Sox were still in it he did nothing to help the team with all the injuries yet they had them all year. He is a loser

  • Dale Sams

“One of the worst Rightfielders in the American league”

    Hilarious.

  • Dano

I have two objections on ratings first Theo he had a team scratching and clawing everyday with alot of injuries. I for one really appreciate the fight they had but Theo a B plus never brought them in any significant help
that they clearly needed. My philosophy is you make your on brakes and luck he threw up the white flag on this team a team that needed someone fighting with them. Finally Pedrioa a C plus he got out there and tried to play and was a great cheerleader on bench and never complained or caused any trouble.
He didn’t throw up white flag he got out there diving for balls but was injured. It would have been very easy for Theo to bring in big bat those guys deserved it.

  • jason bay

Looks like Dale is another JD boot licker. Im sorry to burst your bubble but 10 rightfielders in the american league are better then him this year. Cruz, Swisher, Cuddyer, Quetin, Soo choo, Abreu, Bautista, ichiro, Markakis, and We all know Ordonez is better but injured. So put away you pink hat and you Red Sox nation club card. Lets face the facts he is one of the biggest bust’s in there history, and they have had a few. They couldn’t give him away with that salary. Well you have that Red sox saying you made famous wait till next year!!!! Then we will really suck
PS The Sox have won nothing since Manny left

  • http://cox.net John Montesanti

How can you say Theo put together championship team.
give me a break, take off the rose color glasses.
Theo sucks as a GM and has to go.

  • StuAndrews

I guess Lou must be best buddies with WAKE who is and was clearly an F with only 4 wins in 20 starts or so.

  • Heinie Wagner

Nice to see Lou is making a mockery of his own (2nd) career. It’s bad enough when sportswriters take cheap shots at players, but it’s particularly disgraceful when he was one of them (and not a very good one either) such a short time ago.

  • anon

Lester a B+???? Are you kidding me? Not very consistent this year
    and certainly not an Ace.

    ———–

Lester’s ERA is kind of inflated (see his August 20 performance against the Jays). And he isn’t an ace? lol.

Quentin has been a better hitter. However, Quentin is an awful defender.

Drew’s one of the worst right fielders in the AL? Laughable.
