| An early Red Sox report card | 09.10.10 at 6:35 am ET |

Dustin Pedroia's season was an example of how uneven a good part of the Red Sox' 2010 campaign proved to be. (AP)
I know that the season isn’t officially over yet, but I think its time to reflect on the 2010 campaign.
I’m really not putting much stock into the remainder of the year. If Adrian Beltre or Clay Buchholz struggle down the stretch, will that change your opinion on the type of years they had? If John Lackey or Josh Beckett are lights out the last three weeks, does that mean they’ve had good years? No, I don’t think so. So here it is, the not quite end of the season report card:
Victor Martinez: B-
Missing five weeks obviously hurt, but Vic is still one of the best offensive catchers in the game. Defensively, he really struggled early in the year. It was tough to watch at times, but if you’ve been watching lately, his throwing has improved. He’s now thrown out 23 percent of would be base runners this year. Given where he was in April and May, that’s quite an accomplishment.
Jason Varitek: C+
I would have given Tek a higher grade but its awfully tough to give a ‘B’ to a guy that has missed as much time as he has. I think that the one thing that Tek proved this year is that he can still produce when healthy. He will continue next year to be one of the best backup catchers in the game, if he can stay healthy.
David Ortiz: B-
After another slow start, Papi has put together a good year. Let’s face it, these days there aren’t as many guys in the league that hit 30 HR’s. He became the type of hitter that pitchers had to be worried about again. I don’t expect his numbers to jump in the future. At this point, he is what he is.
Kevin Youkilis: B
Youk was having another very good year for himself before his season ending thumb surgery. His grade is as low as it is because he missed the final two months of the year. To me, his injury was the nail in the coffin for the 2010 Boston Red Sox.
Dustin Pedroia: C+
This is a tough one. Pedey had a good April, a bad May and a very good June. He is by no means a ‘C+’ player, but when you miss half the year that’s what can you expect. He’s the leader of this team. That’s why his injury may have been the biggest blow.
Marco Scutaro: B
Where would the Sox have been without Scutaro leading off this year? The downside this year was his defense. But keep in mind what this guy played through. First, is was a herniated disc in his neck. Now we find out that he is playing — for some reason — with a torn labrum. His arm came up short this year, no question, but it had a lot to do with injuries.
Adrian Beltre: A-
He is the co-MVP of this team, (see Clay Buchholz). Offensively, he was an absolute machine, carrying this lineup at times. The only reason I didn’t give him an ‘A’ was because defensively, I was a little disappointed. Too many errors and, to be honest with you, I think that the official scorer was extremely generous at times.
Billy Hall: B
I’m not sure what I expected from Hall this year, but I can tell you it wasn’t 17 home runs. He played all over the field. His defense might have been a little shaky at times, but what can you expect when you are playing a different position every night. His versatility was a bonus and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back here next year
Jed Lowrie: C-
His grade might have been a lot higher if he didn’t miss four months with mono. Jed has shown that when he is on the field, he can produce. The biggest question is, can he stay on the field? If he didn’t have a history of injuries, Jed may very well be your starting shortstop next year. But if you’re Theo, can you really count on him?
Mike Cameron: C-
I just can’t give this guy a ‘D’. His performance on the field wasn’t the best, but I know what he had to go through just to get on the field. We didn’t see the best of Cameron. He didn’t get good jumps on the ball in center. He didn’t have that explosiveness in his bat. But both were greatly affected by his ab injury.
Jacoby Ellsbury: D
It was a lost year for Jacoby. I still think that he is a very good player and will be in the future for the Sox. I’m one that doesn’t want to see the Sox trade this guy. The only reason I didn’t give him an ‘F’ for the year is because I think that he may have exposed this medical staff and in the end, that may be the best thing for this organization.
J.D. Drew: D+
It was a bad year for J.D. He flew under the radar because of all the other issues that this club had, but in the end this team needed Drew to step up and have a good year with all of the injuries and he just didn’t. One more year!!
Darnell McDonald: B
Darnell came out of nowhere for this team and they needed him. He played all three outfield positions while providing some offensive punch. I only hope that he has finely proved to everyone that he can play in this league.
Mike Lowell: D+
Everything went wrong for Mike this year. He started off in April upset about his playing time and found himself on the disabled list later in the year. Then when Kevin Youkilis went on the DL himself, he finally had his opportunity and didn’t come through. If this is Mike’s last year playing, we should remember him more for what he once was for this organization; a player that always played the game the right way. He was a clutch hitter and a big reason why this team won a World Series in 2007.
Daniel Nava: B-
Another great story this year. Daniel showed that he can hit big league pitching, even though I like him more from the left side. He will add great depth for this team next year. I’m not sure he breaks camp with this team, but he will be called upon again in 2011.
Jon Lester: B+
Overall, Jon had a very good year. But the reason why I didn’t give him a ‘A’ was because I think that there’s still more there. He is one of the best pitchers in the American League and I think that its just a matter of time before he wins a Cy Young. But, there were times that I think within the game, he couldn’t stop the bleeding. Still, the sky is the limit for Jon Lester.
Clay Buchholz: A
Co-MVP of the team (See Adrian Beltre). We all knew the “stuff” was there, we just weren’t sure he could ever harness it. Well, he did. He will be in the Cy Young conversation and rightfully so. Clay matured right in from of our eyes. Strikeout totals were down but that helped him get deeper in games. It also allowed him to have “easier” innings. This team is in good shape with Clay and Lester on top of their rotation for years to come.
Josh Beckett: D
Not as bad as Ellsbury, but this was a lost year for Beckett. It didn’t start off well in April and didn’t get much better when he came off the DL in July. I think that fans should hold judgment until we see what we get from him next year, but there is no question this was an awful year for Josh. The days of being an ace may be behind him, but I still love the fact that he is on this staff. He will be better next year.
John Lackey: C-
Let’s face it, expectations were high for Lackey this year because of the contract. Too many hits and too many walks. But he did give this team innings. He just never had a “great” outing. We expected to see a few games in which he went 8 innings, no runs. That just didn’t happen. Its a different game when half of your starts are in the AL East. I expect more from him next year.
Daisuke Matsuzaka: C
Do we ever really know what to expect from Daisuke? He had his moments this year where you would start to think that he has it figured out. Then we would only get even more frustrated when we realized that he is what he is.
Jonathan Papelbon: B-
OK, so the guy wasn’t a lock in the ninth this year, but he was still pretty good. We have to stop comparing him to what he was two or three years ago. He has to find consistency with his mechanics to get back to where he was. He just looks like a different pitcher when he has an off night. The split can look dominant at times and then the next night, maybe even the next hitter, he leaves it up and it gets hammered. If he pisses you off, deal with it because he will be here next year
Daniel Bard: A
There is no doubt that he is the closer of the future, but he may have to wait another year for that chance. He has shown that he can be dominant in the eighth, but the ninth can be a different animal. I think he’ll be just fine. When he has his slider working, hitters have no shot
Manny Delcarmen: C-
He just never turned into the eighth inning guy that he thought he was. A change of scenery will be good for Manny, I’m just not sure if Colorado is the place for a fly ball pitcher. This team really needed him to step up and get some key outs and he just didn’t.
Hideki Okajima: D+
Oki lost it. He’s always been a guy that pitched like he had 96 mph in the tank. He challenged hitters by spotting his 87 mph heater in. That would set up his change away or curve ball. Those pitches also made his fastball look like it was 96. But he just couldn’t locate it like he did in the past. I’m sure a lot of it was confidence. It takes a lot of guts to pitch in with his fastball, but that’s what he did when he was good.
Ramon Ramirez: D+
How many times did he come into the game in the ninth with a five or six run lead only to give it up and force Tito to bring in Pap? What happened to this guy. Last year he was dominant the first three months. Since then, he’s been scary. Good luck San Fran. You can have him.
Scott Atchison: B-
The Darnell McDonald/Billy Hall of the bullpen. He was up and down early in the year, but once he settled in, and this is scary, he became one of the more consistent pitchers out of the pen for the Sox. The guy throws strikes and sometimes that’s all you need out of the pen.
Felix Doubront: B-
I thought they got a lot more from Felix then they ever thought this early in his career. He showed that he can start in this league as well a viable option out of the pen. I hope they put him back in the rotation next year down in Triple-A. He will be an asset as their sixth starter. If they don’t need him to start, then they can put him out in the ‘pen like they did this year.
Terry Francona: A-
I think that Tito did his best work this year keeping this clubhouse together. It was tough on him in April. Veterans weren’t happy about their roles and Tito did his best to keep it from getting out of control early. When the injury bug hit, his hands were tied. His bullpen was awful. That’s never a good thing because that’s when you get second guessed for making moves or not making moves. Nobody ever stepped up other than Bard and Pap. But the reason why its not an ‘A’ is because there were times when I did question how that pen was being used. I thought that if he protected Bard a little more early in the year, he could cut him loose when he needed him later in the year.
Theo Epstein: B+
I know that people want to blame Theo for everything this year, but I really believe that he put together a championship team. The injuries were just too much to overcome. I just wish that back in late June, early July when he realized that Mike Cameron was not going to be able to make it through the rest of the year, that he went out and picked up another outfielder. If you like David DeJesus in mid-July, why didn’t you like him in June before he got hurt? Also, you can look at Kerry Wood. It was only a cash transaction. No prospects. This bullpen needed help and I understand that once you got later in the year the writing was on the wall, but maybe if he could have gotten a reliever earlier it might have made a difference. I also believe, that if this team was within a game or two at the deadline, Theo would have made a move, but his hands were tied. Would you have invested in this team? That’s not quitting on a team, that’s just being realistic.
