Sources: Nothing done in regard to Red Sox acquiring Joe Blanton 12.14.10 at 8:53 am ET
By Rob Bradford

According to two major league sources familiar with the situation, no agreement has been finalized in regard to the Phillies sending pitcher Joe Blanton to the Red Sox.

SI.com previously reported the Red Sox had a deal in place to acquire starting pitcher Blanton from the Phillies. Earlier Tuesday, FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reported Phillies “were deep in discussions” about sending pitcher Blanton to the Red Sox.

The 30-year-old Blanton has two years remaining on his current contract, which would pay him $8.5 million in both 2011 and ’12. The righty went 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 29 appearances for the Phillies in ’10, while finishing with a 12-8 mark with a 4.05 ERA in ’09. Blanton did go 6-1 with a 3.48 ERA after the ’10 All-Star Game.

Why would we want Blanton? Bullpen guy? Surely not as a starter even if we got rid of Dice K…

  • Flip Him

maybe get him and flip him or dice K for relievers…with the yankees having a ton of cash and nobody to spend it on…I bet they over pay for every reliever to build a killer (expensive) bullpen

Why Blanton to the Red Sox? As a thank you to the Phillies for stealing Cliff Lee from the Yankees and Rangers. As a bonus, they will see Lee much less during the season.

I wonder if they will unload Drew for this guy, They do need an outfielder since Werth left.

If this deal were to happen, there is no doubt that Amaro contacted Epstein before the Lee signing and said, “hey we are in a position to take Lee away from the Yankees but in order to do that, I’m gonna need a little favor….”

  • Mike

They aren’t going to send Drew for him, the point for the Phillies trading him is to unload cash. Not many players are more overpaid then J.D

  • BT

Could Ellsbury be part of this deal?

Blanton will be shipped to Boston for only two minor leaguers and Philly will eat half of his remaining 2years.

  • JDE

I doubt that the Phils would take Drew. He was drafted by the Phils and chose to sit out a year rather than to play for them. I suspect he’s not well liked within the organization.

We need to stop dumping on Dice K, he pitched two no hitters until Scutaro dropped simple pop ups in the eighth. if we’re gonna unload a pitcher unload Lackey, his ERA sucks compared to Dice K

  • Sam

This is a salary dump. Simple. The Phillies don’t care who takes Blanton as long as they take at least half his money, 8.5 mil/year for the next 2. No big names in a trade, no bad contract swaps, no prospects. Just a minor leaguer and a willingness to take on salary. It is seriously that simple. And there was no conversation prior to the Lee signing between Theo and Amaro. That’s called collusion.

  • Matt

Mike are you serious? A pitcher can “almost” throw a no-hitter and still suck (see Jackson, Edwin). Also, John Lackey had a lower ERA than Dice in 2010, 4.40 to 4.69. Not that you should ever judge a pitcher on ERA, just pointing out that you are wrong. In regards to the article, I don’t see where Boston’s interest in Blanton is coming from. He’s a mediocre pitcher in the NL. How will he fare better in the AL East?
