A look at just how good these Red Sox might be 05.30.11 at 9:57 am ET
By Rob Bradford

Nobody has more wins this month than the Red Sox (19).

No team has a better batting average (.288), OPS (.824) or slugging percentage (.472) in May than this team.

Their starting pitchers have combined for a 3.69 ERA in the last 29 days.

And, most importantly, the Red Sox find themselves in first-place on May 30 for the first time since 2007 (when they were 10 ½ games ahead of second-place Baltimore).

So, the question is: How good is this team?

The answer will largely depend on injuries, the ability to some surprises to sustain their performances (see Tim Wakefield, Alfredo Aceves, Rich Hill), and … did we say injuries?

But, as we sit here, perhaps one of the most telling aspects of this club is that you could make an argument that the Red Sox have five players who are the best in the American League at their respective positions.

This list could be extended to Rich Hill, who is one of two relievers with at least eight appearances to not have allowed a run, joining Jose Contreras.

But for now, let’s focus on the regulars:

STARTING PITCHER: JOSH BECKETT

Yes, his ERA jumped up to a whopping 1.80 after giving up two runs in six innings Sunday night (1.00 for the month of May), but that is still best in the AL. He also has the league’s best batting average against (.189).

In the conversation: Trevor Cahill, Jered Weaver, James Shields, Justin Verlander, Alexi Ogando. Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz.

FIRST BASEMAN: ADRIAN GONZALEZ

He has the most RBI among AL first baseman (45), but doesn’t lead in any other major offensive category. Gonzalez has the third-most homers (9), the second-best OPS (.911), and trails Casey Kotchman in batting average (although the Rays’ first baseman has 108 fewer plate appearances). Still, consider the overall production, along with the fact he hasn’t made a single error, and the first-year Red Sox makes a strong case.

In the conversation: Miguel Cabrera, Mark Teixeira, Paul Konerko.

THIRD BASEMAN: KEVIN YOUKILIS

Sure, Youkilis might have a subpar batting average (.252), but no AL third baseman has a better OPS (.876), with Adrian Beltre the only member of the group totaling more extra-base hits (23 to Youklis’ 22).

In the conversation: Alex Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre, Wilson Betemit.

CENTER FIELD: JACOBY ELLSBURY

As a leadoff hitter, Ellsbury joins Minnesota’s Denard Span in scoring the most runs in the AL (29), while totaling the best batting average (.318) and second-best OPS (.848). When comparing him to centerfielders, Ellsbury’s OPS is second only to Curtis Granderson. The Sox’ outfielder also has more stolen bases (19) than any other AL player at his position.

In the conversation: Curtis Granderson, Denard Span, Melky Cabrera, Adam Jones

DESIGNATED HITTER: DAVID ORTIZ

No DH has more home runs (10), and only Travis Hafter – who comes in at 85 less plate appearances than Ortiz – claims a higher OPS than the Sox’ slugger’s .902. Ortiz has more total bases than any other designated hitter (100), while having reached base above and beyond any of his counterparts (78).

In the conversation: Billy Butler, Vlad Guerrero, Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez, Johnny Damon.

    love the sox…

But Verlander is a better Pitcher…Gonzalez okay…Longoria at 3rd…hate to say Granderson is having a monster year…and there is not another DH out there that compares to Ortiz…no real competition for him…

But Beckett, Youk, and Ells are having great years…but this article is a stretch to say “best in AL”

First of all Justin verlander is a overrated pitcher he is good but not that good. Evan longoria. Is arguably one of the most over rated player’s in baseball last year he started the AL. All star game which is shows how much fans know. Adrian Beltre had a 100x better season than longoria and there is no comparison. Between longoria and kevin youkilis. Youkilis blows him out of the water defensively and a way all around better hitter. There is no argument right now that Adrian Gonzalez is the best 1st baseman in baseball. Pujols is the best but isn’t playing that good. Gonzalez is 2nd to him. Ortiz is the greatest. DH of all time no questions asked. Granderson is only having. A good power season he is only batting 2.70. Ellsbury is batting 3.00 and is the best defensive center fielder in baseball and is by far the fastest man in baseball. They are the best at there position right. now

First of all, just using the first two months of the season for this discussion is dumb.

Howie Kendrick the best 2B in the AL? I rest my case.

Pedroia on the other hand, clearly top 2 between him and Cano. I don’t care what he’s hitting on May 30.

You actually hurt the Red Sox by framing the discussion this way. They have MORE than 5:

    SP
    Closer
    1B
    2B
    SS
    3B
LF (again, I don’t care about a two month snapshot, go look at the AL LF crop and tell me one guy who is a better PLAYER than Crawford regardless who is having the better SEASON)

And I guess CF, although the CF crop in not just the AL, but MLB overall is absolutely pathetic right now. This is the only reason Ellsbury is in the discussion. He’s a nice player, not a star.

Let’s not forget Drew. Simply the best Right Fielder in MLB. Not hitting at potential right now, but in the field matched by none.

Right now, Curtis Granderson is the best CF in the AL. 17 HR’s Good RBI and RC. Great base runner, and draws walks. Natch, the Tigers gift wrap him for the Yankees. In the stadium, look for him to finish with 40 plus HR. On the subject of NY, only in that uniform could Colon and Garcia come back and pitch so well after years of bad pitching. It happens all the time. They keep NY in 1st untill the tradinng deadline, when they will buy some more talent.
