Red Sox face outfield dilemmas 06.27.11 at 4:58 pm ET
By Alex Speier

J.D. Drew and the rest of the Red Sox right fielders have delivered little production this year. (WEEI.com/John Vu)

It is an offensive position.

In the American League, right field is a spot where teams expect to get some thump. Players such as Jose Bautista and Carlos Quentin and Nelson Cruz have made right field one of the positions upon which teams are most reliant for run producers. The average team in the AL features a .264 average, .340 OBP, .425 slugging mark and .764 OPS from that spot on the field; only one position (first base) has yielded a higher OPS in the American League.

That, in turn, makes the Sox’ deficiency at the position all the more glaring. Among the 14 American League clubs, Sox right fielders had the worst average (.220), OBP (.304), slugging percentage (.336) and OPS (.640) of any team. It was a position where, entering the year, the Sox expected a platoon could offer them fairly strong production.

J.D. Drew was expected to deliver his usual impact against right-handed pitching, while Mike Cameron and/or Darnell McDonald were viewed as capable of offering above-average production against left-handers. But clearly, it hasn’t worked out that way.

“We need more out of that position,” a team source acknowledged.

Drew is hitting .232 with a .330 OBP, .326 slugging mark and .657 OPS. Against righties, he’s hitting .239/.344/.323/.667.

McDonald’s poor overall numbers (.109/.163/.174/.337) look little better when limited to his performance against left-handed pitchers (.107/.167/.214/.381).

Cameron, meanwhile, has done little in his first foray into part-time duty. The 38-year-old is hitting .154/.218/.275/.493 on the year, and .150/.224/.317/.541 against southpaws.

That, in turn, has the Sox approaching a pair of interesting crossroads in the coming days and weeks.

Left fielder Carl Crawford is nearing a return from the disabled list; he could be activated as soon as next weekend in Houston. When he is ready to be added to the roster, the Sox must make a decision about their corresponding roster move.

In some ways, the path of least resistance would be to send Josh Reddick to the minors, given that he has options, and Cameron and McDonald do not. Yet despite the fact that — like Crawford, Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury — Reddick is left-handed, shipping him back to Pawtucket seems unlikely given that he is hitting .414 with a .457 OBP, .690 slugging mark and 1.147 OPS in 35 plate appearances. He is showing a maturing approach at the plate, an ability to impact the baseball and he also presents a defensive player with the versatility to offer solid defense at all three outfield positions. He has shown enough that the Sox would feel comfortable keeping him on the big league roster going forward.

Indeed, Reddick is part of the reason why the Sox aren’t terribly worried about the left-handed side of a platoon going forward. Between Drew, Reddick and eventually rehabbing outfielder Ryan Kalish, the Sox feel that they should have a player (or a combination of players) capable of giving them solid production against right-handed pitchers.

The greater concern for the club lies in its ability to get right-field production against left-handers. This roadtrip was viewed as an opportunity to see whether either McDonald or Cameron could assert himself against southpaws. Thus far, McDonald is 1-for-9 and has stranded 14 base runners. Cameron is 0-for-4 (0-for-3 against lefties) with a pair of strikeouts.

In recent days, playing time would suggest that McDonald has seemingly emerged as the backup outfielder of choice, as he was the player who was inserted into Sunday’s game when Drew had to leave in the second inning due to his eye contusion. Even so, the Sox are hardly tethered to either Cameron or McDonald at this point, unless one begins to produce. And it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if either player is in danger of losing his roster spot when Crawford returns.

Naturally, the Sox would prefer an internal solution — whether improved performance from Cameron/McDonald against righties and/or Drew/Reddick against lefties. Or, perhaps one player will catch fire and assert himself as an everyday option who can be used against both righties and lefties. Drew has been that in the past; Reddick showed a strong approach against both lefties and righties in Triple-A this year, and has done the same in a small sample in the majors.

Even so, with the trade deadline now five weeks away, it is clear that the Sox hedge their bets and explore the trade market as a potential means of addressing their deficient production at a position that they expected to be a strength, but that in practice has been anything but.

Given the team’s optimism that Drew, Reddick or Kalish will at some point produce against righties (if not both), the Sox may not end up pursuing the top-tier talents at the position (such as Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran). Even so, the Sox’ interest in players who could serve as right-handed outfield/bench complements seems to be growing as their needs become more clearly defined.

I think for the time being, you must go with Reddick and when Crawford returns you have to DFA McDonald or Cameron.

  • Julio Lugo

Time to jettison both DREW and Cameron….imagine, THEO has 27 or so Million tied up in these two. I’m still as miffed by the Cameron signing as I was with the Lackey, Renteria, and Lugo signings….odd odd singings…all stiffs. Why on earth would THEO or anyone else pay Cameron $7 Million per season. A complete and total bust. I agree with “common sense” play Reddick in right field.

  • YAZ

I could play better than Cameron..he makes me look young !

  • Skrilla

they should definately stick with reddick and just let the waste of space aka J.D. Drew enjoy the rest of his time with the red sox on the bench until we can get rid of him for good.

  • KCF

Give JD until the All Star break to snap out of it. If he doesn’t get hot, then it’s time to get Reddick a lot of AB’s in RF right after the break.

  • Michael

I think Darnell was tapped on Sunday over Cam on account of his cousin James being on the mound for the Pirates. I wouldn’t read anything into it other than that. I think Darnell gets DFA’d when Crawford returns. Cameron gets consideration for being a well-paid veteran.

  • Mike

Drew has been an absolute bust and I have my doubts as to whether Crawford will see the light this year. If Ellsbury takes a dive, the Sox won’t have any outfield. The Sox minor league system is rated 17th, not at the top—as we were led to believe. A trade is necessary for RF.

  • Babe Ruth Is Dead

cameron and mcdonald have had nearly 1/2 season to show they can produce…time is up…they need to go. the sox need to get a right handed rf/1b to fill out the bench and keep reddick as the 4th outfielder in case drew continues to slump.

  • SoxOrGoHoMe

Mike, you have your doubts as to whether Crawford will se the light? Gimme a break. Crawford has had one bad month. One. That’s it. Granted, it was a historically bad month but since that awful month of April Crawford is batting over .300. Yes, thats right. Carl Crawford is batting over .300 since May 1st. David Ortiz had a bad month last year too. So did Mark Teixeira. Both players finished the year with very respectable numbers. So will Crawford. I love it how people have been saying that Crawford has been awful at the plate when he’s got a .304 average over the past month and a half. Does that sound like the numbers of someone who’s struggling?

As far as Cameron is concerned; You can’t designate someone for assignment without their permission if they have 5 or more years of major league experience. Obviously, you would have to outright release Cameron and not DFA him. I don’t think Theo is ready to do that just yet. I think he’s going to give himself until the trade deadline to figure this whole thing out. As a fan who wants to see Theo field the best team possible I want Reddick to get a chance. I think he deserves it. Who knows, maybe he stays hot for another month or two. It’s worth finding out because I think JD Drew’s career is virtually over.

  • Dismas

This is the part of sports I hate because we all know it’ll just be politics as usual and we’ll see Reddick sent down when Crawford returns. When J.D. Drew comes off the DL he’ll be back automatic out status in the lineup. That’s the most frustrating thing about Tito (and management like him–he’s certainly not the only one) but they’ll forego a few more wins overall just to keep the status quo and not step on the “starter’s” toes. Why stroke egos? Just put the best guys out there, send a message, ride em till the streak goes cold, then switch it up and see if you can’t do better.

Or they could try to make a trade. I don’t know who might be on the block but you gotta imagine it wouldn’t be a big splash seeing as when Drew is finished this year they might be looking at bigger deals in the off season. Perhaps they could rent someone from the All Star to October.

  • T EP

If you look at Drews average number of catches to walks ration divided by the number of wins when Drew is in right field and then added into the number or runs allowed when Drew is in Right plus his career on base percentage…DREW is the greatest outfielder in the history of the game.

  • furian

Maybe when Jed comes back let him try some LF, couldn’t hurt. I would DFA Cameron when he does and DFA McDonald when Carl comes back. I think Sutton in RF as a platoon player would be better than Cameron/McDonald.

  • CelticsPatSox

Dont need to make a trade, probably wouldn’t get good value. What they should do is ride the hot bat of Redick. He will at least give us defense, speed on the bases and a legitimate power threat in the bottom of the order. There is way to much emphasis being put on having a right handed bat against lefties and vice versa. If you can hit you can hit and Redick should get more ABs aganst lefties to help him along in his development as an everyday outfielder. By the way I think he is 4 for 6 against lefties this year.

Dismas is spot on with his comment on the politics and it also drives me mad. The cycle is, veteran player is making a decent or large amount of money, he is noticibly over the hill and dramatically under performing and yet due to egos and the benefit of the doubt, they keep the veteran in even when there is a talented and younger player ready to perform. My parting statement, I hope that doesn’t happen with Miller, the kid has the potential to be a stud.

  • babyalivecheaton

    bring up the 2 yoots

  • McNab

TEP, at the risk of sounding like my teenage daughter…LMAO. That was good.

And, Dismas might be “spot on” with his comments on the politics; but that whole “ride em till the streak goes cold, then switch it up and see if you can’t do better” line is dangerous, & hopefully tongue-in-cheek. I can only imagine the effects of ripping the starters out of the line-up in favor of a rookie every time they have a hiccup in performance. That would be just marvelous for morale, loyalty, production, and keeping good players.

  • Berry

Keep an eye on Michael Cuddyer … Twinkies are going no where, he’s a FA at the end of the year and he plays multiple positions….

  • Mike

Other than possibly the kid SS, who isn’t doing anything at Pawtucket, the Sox minor league system is a farce and fans have been duped.

  • zouki

what in the name of mark bellhorn does anyone expect to see from jd drew for the rest of the season? i try so hard to like the guy but one more two-hopper to second with guys on second and third and two outs and i’ll go nuts. our cat, sensible beast that she is, knows to hide whenever jd comes up because she doesn’t like her humans (mainly me, wife is more restrained) yelling at the television. can right fielders suddenly need tommy john surgery so they can disappear for the rest of the season? how about four months to get over a black eye? take whatever time you need, jd. i tried, honest i did.

  • http://www.homesbyreilly.com Todd

Drew is just horrific, the Dice K of the outfield, Riddick/Kalish/MacDonald would do a decent enough job, get rid of Drew, the Sox should go after a right hand hitting Shortstop say someone like Hanley Ramirez, besides playing great defense, boy would he look great batting 6th or 7th in this lineup or what, while adding balance to the line-up you would be less concerned about right field with that type of line up, think about it!

  • chris

    Best Post , Berry
    This could work.

    Worst Post, Todd.
How the hell do you get Hanley?
Do you really want a head case like him.
Does not fix your RF problem.
What do you do with J.D. Cameron and Darnell?

  • KDub

I am a huge Michael Cuddyer fan and I’d love to see him in a BoSox uni. Great guy on and off the field. But for the time being, I think I’d go with Reddick. Show some confidence in the kid and see what happens. Drew cannot be sent packing fast enough for me. Never liked him, never will.

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... dave pickens

I think the sox need to get rid of drew and Cameron. And get a player/players that can help them out in right field. These two guys need to RETIRE.

  • Mikey

Time to cut ties with Cameron and McDonald….Keep Reddick and bring up Kalish when he is healthy…Drew has already “retired”

  • http://aol worcestersoxfan

Theo may have a keen eye for trades, and is good at developing young talent, but in his tenure, I would have to give him a “D” at best for his free agent signings…both Julio Lugo and Edgar Renteria were signed for big contracts and then we ate the contracts and traded them away…..Adrian Beltre was the only successful free agent he has signed, and he was only here for one year….John Lackey? Disaster…..JD Drew? Disappointment at best….this years crop of relievers? More time on DL than pitching….he has to stop falling in love with guys who are fragile

  • SoxOrGoHoMe

worcestersoxfan, that’s the nature of free agency. By the time a player gets past arbitration he’s usually in his 30′s. We all know that players start to decline in their 30′s. Every GM in the history of baseball that has had a high revenue team has whiffed on free agents. I could list about 20 free agents that were total busts that Brian Cashman signed. Theo has done a great job as GM. I guarantee if you were the GM we wouldn’t have guys like Pedroia, Lester, Buchholz, Bard, Papelbon, Ellsbury. Theo has put together a great team. Theo Epstein traded for the best player in basbeall this past offseason!!! He doesn’t get credit for that? Gimme a break. He has brought 2 world championships to Boston, and we’re still contenders for another one.

There are a lot of teams who have high payrolls and are not perrenial contenders. The Chicago Cubs have a payroll of around $130 million. Theo has a payroll of around $160 million. That’s not a huge difference. You want to know how bad a GM is, go be a fan of the Cubs and then tell me what you think of Theo. I’m so sick of fans like you. Spoiled brats who don’t realize a great thing when it’s right in your face. Theo has had this team in contention to win the world series every single year he’s been here. And don’t tell me he gets a pass because of the payroll. There are a ton of high payroll clubs who are not perrenial contenders. The New York Mets. The Chicago Cubs. The Chicago White Sox. The Los Angelas Angels. The Los Angels Dodgers. Even the Mariners have a $100 million payroll!!!!!

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Go be a fan of the Cubs for a couple years and then tell me how much you miss Theo. Theo has completely changed the culture of this franchise. The red Sox used to be the lovable losers. Now they’re one of the elite teams in baseball who are at the top of the power rankings year in and year out.

Just play Reddick in right-field. No trades for so-so right-fielders, thank you.
