Make no mistake, John Farrell thinks the ump blew the game-ending call 07.05.11 at 11:15 pm ET

Blue Jays manager John Farrell didn’t immediately argue the final play of the 3-2 Red Sox win Tuesday night but once he saw the replay of the out call on Edwin Encarnacion at the plate, he made no mistake in criticizing the accuracy of home plate umpire Brian Knight on the tag attempt by Jason Varitek.

“We should still be playing right now,” the former Red Sox pitching coach said. “That play is right in front of Brian Knight. It was clear that Edwin did a good job sliding around the plant leg of Tek but his swipe tag missed him by no less than a foot. So right now, we should be out on that field playing.”

John McDonald lofted a soft single to left field with two outs and third base coach Brian Butterfield sent Encarnacion home from second with what would have been the tying run after Jonathan Papelbon was brought in to protect a 3-0 lead to start the ninth.

Darnell McDonald threw a strike to Varitek, who blocked the plate with his left foot. Replays showed that Encarnacion’s left foot was blocked but he hooked his right foot through and got the plate while Varitek’s swipe tag missed the body.

“From 90 feet from home plate and with the runner in between the view of ourselves and home plate, he made the call as it was. Unfortunately, we should still be playing,” Farrell continued. “After the replay, absolutely, because from our vantage point, Edwin is right in line with the play at the plate. We don’t have the benefit of replay but the wide margin he missed the tag, a little bit surprised the call went that way.”

I am fairly sure with that view – if this was say the NFL which does more or less the best ‘replay’ in pro sports (and it could use improvements..) Their wouldn’t be enough to over turn it would simply be “stands” and the runner is out.

Knight seemed to be looking solely to see if Varitek held onto the ball. Once he saw that he did, he called Encarnacion out. The appearance of a great block of the plate trumped the actuality of it.

From this angle he was definitely safe and the ump did blow the call. However the ump also blew the strike three call earlier in the inning. Had he gotten that one right, the game would have already been over and this play would never have happened

The main problem was the the ump was looking at the lead (left) foot, which was blocked but not the second (right) foot that actually made contact with the plate before the tag. It’s hard to focus one’s eyes in two places simultaneously. At least, unlike the NBA, the call was made in good faith, instead of giving the call to “any team other than Boston”.

Which is why bit@hing over calls is something only losers do. Expected a little better from Farrell.

Two things are obvious… the left foot of the runner is blocked, and the tag is applied (look carefully at Veritek’s glove as the top of it moves up as he hits the left shin of the runner). What is not clear is whether or not the right foot sneaks in there to touch the plate. That foot could also be “over” the plate without touching it. In an NFL type review, definitely not enough to over turn. I also agree that none of this would have been necessary had Pappelbpon had gotten the call on strike three earlier. That was definitely the blown call that kept the game going. So, if we have to accept the call of balls and strikes as part of the game, we must also accept the call of the play at the plate – it all evens out (I think?).

If you watch the play closely, as he is coming in for his slide the plate is clean behind Tek. After the slide there is a line of dirt where his shoe crossed the plate. Meaning that Encarnacion must have dragged his foot along the ground. I find it hard to believe that he dragged his foot in the dirt and then “floated” it over the plate but I guess anything is possible. Still, its all a moot point, the ump called it out and Tek, showing his baseball acumen, just jumped up and ran for the dugout, game over.

It was a bang bang play. The plate was blocked.Even with slo slo motion
it is not clear that he was safe. Out was the correct call.Jusice was served.

The ump also blew a strike three call to the first batter Pap faced. The game should have been over before the McDonald hit.

  • Jim

The replay is from a different angle than the Umps view, so we don’t know what he did or didn’t see. The time to complain about a call is when it happens, Farrel’s complaints after the watching the replay later is so much hot air.
