Players show off their uniforms at the Oldtime Baseball Game's media day.
The 18th annual Oldtime Baseball Game founded by Steve Buckley gives the chance for local college, high school and even former professional baseball players a chance to play a game in old fashioned uniforms as well as raise money for a local charity.
This year’s game is being played as a benefit for the C2 Mission, which was created to benefit children families affected by Cerebral Palsy and Cystic Fibrosis.
“The game started sort of by accident in 1994 and we’re all very proud of it because it’s a community event where people come together and celebrate baseball,” Buckley said at the game’s media day on Monday. “I used to always hear stories that back in the 30′s a thousand people would show up for the local mill team and local semi-pro team. When I was a kid I remember people would come up to me and say I remember when a thousand people would show up and see so and so. To replicate that we get players in old style uniforms, get 1,500 people to show up at this little ball park.
“The players really get into it, and the kids by next week will get on the internet and look up the uniforms. The uniforms have two kinds of history. It’s the uniforms themselves and then it’s who has worn this uniform over the years. That’s something we’re really proud of.”
Some of the uniforms that will be worn in the game are 1938 Boston Red Sox, No. 3 Jimmie Foxx, 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers, No. 32 Sandy Koufax, 1964 Boston Red Sox, No. 17 Dick Radatz, 1952 Boston Braves, No. 19 Joe Morgan, 1942 Boston Red Sox, No. 6 Johnny Pesky and 1939 Boston Red Sox, No. 9 Ted Williams.
One player who has a unique story behind his uniform is Alex Lee, who resides in Auburndale, MA, but played college ball for Wofford College in South Carolina.
“It’s a 1940′s New York Cuban uniform,” Lee said. “I wore it last year. It’s Martin Dihigo. He was a coach. My Dad was born in Cuba, along with my whole Dad’s side of the family. They left in 1961 and moved to Miami and then came up to Boston. It means a lot that I can where a Cubans uniform to honor that side of my family. When last year Mr. Buckley came up to me and said I could switch uniforms, I was like ‘Yeah, absolutely, that’s perfect’.”
Another unique aspect of the game is it gives players a chance to get together and play baseball with friends, but also raise money for charity.
“I think the game is a really good concept,” Lee said. “It’s really cool that we get to wear the throwback uniforms, but at the same time we do raise a lot of money for a good charity every year. You can get people to come to the game and not say it’s a bunch of idiots running around wearing throwbacks.”
Shane O’Leary, who recently graduated from Catholic Memorial School and will play for Merrimack College next year is playing in his first game this year.
“I’m really excited to play in it,” O’Leary said. “My Dad and I were talking about it, and now to finally be apart of it I am really excited. I think it’s awesome with the old time uniforms. I know it’s for a good cause. I really wanted to do it, so I jumped on the opportunity when it came.”
Two-time game MVP James Greeley, who recently graduated from Mass College of Libral Arts will be playing in his seventh game. He calls it the “highlight of his summer every year.”
“My best experience was last year.” Greeley said. “At the time I thought it would be my final game, it was my sixth appearance. I really tried to take it all in and enjoy the pre-game ceremony and take a look at all the fans, and the whole environment. I did that. Then, I went out and pitched well, and I got a hit and a couple RBIs and then ended up by winning MVP.”
Former players that have played in the game include former Red Sox pitchers Dennis ‘Oil Can’ Boyd and Jim Corsi, as well as current MLB player, and former Northeastern star Carlos Pena. WEEI’s Lou Merloni will be playing this year.
The 18th Annual Old Time Baseball Game will be held on Thursday, August 11 at St. Peters Field in Cambridge. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
