Here’s the week in review, Nuggetpalooza-style!
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – On Monday night, David Ortiz drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 9th inning. It was his 12th go-ahead RBI with two outs in the 9th inning or after since he joined the Red Sox, third most on the club since 1950:
14 – Carl Yastrzemski
13 – Brian Daubach
12 – David Ortiz
9 – Wade Boggs
9 – Manny Ramirez
8 – Rico Petrocelli
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – The Red Sox won Monday’s game despite trailing by four runs in the 5th inning. It was just the third time in 2011 that they’ve done it. The others were May 16 against Baltimore and July 1 against Houston. Since the start of the 2009 season, the Red Sox and Tigers are tied for the major league lead with 10 such wins each. The Pirates haven’t trailed by 4+ in the 5th or after and won since September 13, 2008, losing their last 146 such games in a row.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Also on Monday, the Red Sox pitching staff allowed zero walks for the eighth time this season and they are 7-1 in those games. The Yankees lead the AL with 11 such games this season and are 11-0. The Cubs had walked at least one batter in 88 consecutive games through August 9, but have allowed no walks in two of their most recent two contests.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Jonathan Papelbon tossed perfect 9th innings on Monday and Tuesday, bringing his career total of appearances of 1+ innings without allowing a baserunner to 142, easily the most in Red Sox history:
142 – Jonathan Papelbon
90 – Mike Timlin
72 – Hideki Okajima
57 – Manny Delcarmen
Here’s today’s trivia question: Where does Papelbon’s 142 such perfect appearances rank on the all-time major league list? Answer at the end.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – After the Red Sox forced opposing bullpens into a 5.65 ERA in July, they haven’t had nearly as much success so far in August as opposing relief pitchers have a 3.34 ERA so far this month.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Darnell McDonald hit a big two-run homer on Tuesday night, his 13th home run as a member of a Red Sox. However, the Red Sox are only 7-6 in games in which McDonald has homered. Since the start of last season, the Red Sox winning percentage when McDonald homers (.538) is the lowest of any Boston player with more than six over that span. The Red Sox have the highest winning percentage when these players hit home runs since the start of 2009:
.800 – Kevin Youkilis (28-7)
.769 – Dustin Pedroia (20-6)
.769 – Adrian Beltre (20-6)
.750 – Jason Varitek (9-3)
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Minnesota starter Francisco Liriano walked seven in six innings on Tuesday, becoming just the third opposing starter to throw 6+ innings and allow more walks than innings since 1997. The last pitcher to have such a start against Boston was Detroit’s Justin Verlander in 2006. No Boston starting pitcher has had such an appearance since Tim Wakefield in 1997.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Jon Lester has now allowed no home runs in six of his last seven starts, allowing a total of two in the last month and a half. He had allowed 11 homers in his previous 10 starts from 4/28 through 6/14.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Wednesday marked the fifth straight game in which Boston’s bullpen allowed an earned run (exactly one run in each of the five games). It was just the second time since last June that they’ve had such a streak. The other was a six gamer from May 1-6, 2011.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – After reaching base at least once following a full count in 27 consecutive games, the Red Sox failed to reach on full counts on Monday (2 PA) or Wednesday (3 PA) against the Twins.
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – Did you realize that the Red Sox have not loaded the bases in any of their last three games (Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday)?
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – The Red Sox have won the first game of their last two series, after losing the series opener in eight of their previous 12 series. For the season, they are 19-19 in series openers (9-11 on the road).
———————————————————————————————————————————————–
* – John Lackey got the win on Friday despite allowing 12 baserunners in 6 innings. It was the third time that Lackey has won despite 6+ IP and over 2.0+ baserunners per inning since joining the Red Sox last year. Since 2000, only Andy Pettitte (5) has more such wins than Lackey (4) among AL pitchers. The all-time leader in such wins in the AL (since 1950) is long-time Twins’ starter Scott Erickson, with eight.
——————————————————————————————————————————————–
Trivia answer: With 142 career appearances of 1+ innings and no baserunners, Papelbon ranks 55th all-time. Here are the top three:
352 – Trevor Hoffman
339 – Mariano Rivera
305 – Billy Wagner
