KANSAS CITY — Tim Wakefield fell short of becoming the 108th major league pitcher to claim 200 wins, with the Sox unraveling in the sixth inning via the Royals ‘ eight-run frame. The result was a 9-4 win for KC, Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium.
Wakefield carried a 4-1 lead into the sixth, but would be forced to give way to reliever Matt Albers with the Sox clinging to a one-run lead and the potential game-tying run at second. The Sox relief pitcher promptly walked Salvador Perez and then took the decision away from Wakefield by giving up an RBI single to Chris Getz.
After a Alcides Escobar ground out, Albers succumbed to back-to-back run-scoring hits from Alex Gordon and Melky Cabrera to had the Royals the lead for good.
WHAT WENT WRONG
- Albers continued his struggles of late, allowing five runs on three hits and walking two in just a third of an inning. The reliever saw his ERA jump from 2.84 to 3.71. He has now allowed runs in five of his last seven appearances, having entered the game with a 7.06 ERA for his six previous August appearances.
- On his 97th, and final pitch, of the night, Wakefield allowed an RBI double to Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, resulting in the knuckleballer leaving his appearance with the potential game-tying run on second base with one out in the sixth inning. It came one batter after Jeff Francoeur had doubled to score Eric Hosmer, cutting the Sox lead to two.
- Chris Getz ruined Wakefield’s bid at winning career game No. 200, singling in Moustakas with reliever Albers on the mound. The play at the plate was close, with Josh Reddick making a solid through to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. But the baserunner was just able to get under the catcher’s tag, closing out Wakefield’s line.
- Entering the game, the Red Sox bullpen had allowed just one run on two hits over 5 1/3 innings through Wakefield’s previous four starts. Saturday it surrendered five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
WHAT WENT RIGHT
- Wakefield pitched a solid game, allowing four runs on nine hits over his 5 2/3 innings. During his current five-game winless streak he has totaled a 4.50 ERA (34 innings, 17 earned runs).
- Darnell McDonald continued to display his bunting prowess, laying down a perfect attempt with nobody out and Ryan Lavarnway at second base. It was just the Red Sox’ fourth bunt for a hit this season. McDonald notched 12 sacrifice bunts in 2010, the sixth most in the major leagues. The play paid off, with Lavarnway scoring on Marco Scutaro’s double play grounder.
- Carl Crawford claimed his third RBI of the month, plating Dustin Pedroia with a one-out single up the middle.
- McDonald drove in the Red Sox’ third run on a sacrifice fly, scoring Josh Reddick. The one-out fly ball to deep right field marked the fifth time in the last six games he has come up with a runner in scoring position that the outfielder has come away with an RBI. Coming into the game, since July 6 McDonald had gone 4-for-6 with seven RBI in such situations.
- Lavarnway picked up his first major league RBI, rifling a single into center field to score Saltalamacchia from second. The sixth-inning play — which gave the Sox a 4-1 lead — was also a product of Saltalamacchia’s speed, with the catcher narrowly beating Cabrera’s throw home.
