| Friday’s Red Sox-Rangers matchups: Andrew Miller vs. Derek Holland | 09.02.11 at 1:18 pm ET |
After dropping two games out of three in an electric series against the Yankees, the Red Sox begin a three-game tilt against the AL West-leading Rangers Friday night at Fenway. Andrew Miller is looking to pick up where he left off after pitching 6 1/3 shutout innings against the Rangers in his last start, while young Derek Holland will face Boston for the first time this season.
Miller (6-2, 4.42 ERA) has been superb in his last two outings. The left-hander gave up just one run in 5 1/3 innings at Kansas City before shutting out Texas in that last start at Rangers Ballpark on Aug. 25. Both starts resulted in wins, which is especially impressive considering Miller had not started in 17 games prior to his victory against the Royals.
After an up-and-down July in which Miller recorded a 6.28 ERA and walked 20 batters in six starts, the lefty’s appearances were dialed back in August. But as the saying goes, “Less is more,” as Miller was excellent in two starts and two relief efforts in August, posting a 1.84 ERA while giving up just seven walks. Most of Miller’s success this season has come on the road, however, as he is 5-1 with a 3.32 ERA away from Fenway and just 1-0 with a 6.88 ERA at home.
The current Rangers lineup has just 29 combined plate appearances against Miller, hitting only .129 against the Red Sox pitcher in those appearances. But it is a small sample size, and the only Ranger with more than five plate appearances versus Miller is former Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre (seven plate appearances).
Holland did not pitch when the Red Sox outscored the Rangers 30-7 in their four-game series last week. The 24-year-old left-hander has pitched well over the last two months, going 6-1 with a 3.06 ERA in his last 10 starts. In his last start against the Angels, Holland gave up just one run in 6 2/3 innings, guiding Texas to a crucial win over second-place Los Angeles.
While he has not pitched against Boston this season, Holland is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in his short career against the Red Sox. The Boston lineup is hitting just .196 versus Holland in his career. Carl Crawford has just two hits in 11 plate appearances against Holland while no other Boston player has faced the young left-hander more than eight times.
