| Crawford apologizes to Red Sox fans in web diary | 09.19.11 at 3:21 pm ET |
When Carl Crawford signed a seven-year, $142 million deal with the Red Sox last December, fans likely expected that Crawford would make an immediate impact in Boston. After all, the speedy outfielder hit .307 last season with 47 stolen bases and won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award.
But almost a full season into his first year in Boston, Crawford has failed to live up to expectations for someone who will be making $14 million this season. Crawford is hitting a career-low .255 over 122 games and has stolen 18 bases, his lowest total since his rookie year when he stole nine bases in 63 games for the Rays.
On Sunday afternoon, ESPNBoston published a diary entry from Crawford in which he apologized to Red Sox fans. The diary is part of a season-long agreement with the media outlet in which Crawford periodically provides exclusive material for diary updates.
“I want to end the diary saying something to the fans of Boston,” Crawford wrote in the diary’s final installment. “I just want to say I’m sorry for the year I’ve had. You guys have been really supportive and I appreciate that. Hopefully when we get into these playoffs, I can be the real Carl Crawford that I know I am. We’ll see.”
The apology was the ending to a strange post in which Crawford deflected some blame toward Marco Scutaro for a close play at the plate on in the bottom of the third inning Saturday. Crawford scored on a Mike Aviles double but failed to slide into home plate, thus making the call at the plate much closer than it could have been. Scutaro was in the on-deck circle at the time of the play.
“Also in that game, I had the run where I wasn’t sure whether to slide or not at home,” Crawford said of the mix-up with Scutaro. “I figured I could get in standing up, but it was kind of close. I definitely want Marco Scutaro next time to let me know if it’s going to be that close, and I told him that. He said he was telling me to slide but I didn’t see him.”
While the Red Sox have struggled in September, Crawford has hit .273 with five RBIs and a stolen base. Crawford hit .224 against the Rays this year but played better in the final four games against his former team, going 5-for-11 with a double and two runs scored. Crawford was a late scratch for the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Orioles with a stiff neck.
