Sources: Jon Lester shouldn’t be lumped in with other starters 10.13.11 at 2:29 pm ET
By Rob Bradford

Jon Lester

According to multiple team sources, the participation of Jon Lester in joining the other starting pitchers in drinking beer, eating fried chicken and playing video games in the clubhouse during games (as was reported by The Boston Globe Wednesday) was overstated. One source said Lester participated “occasionally, but very infrequent.”

The sources also confirmed that unlike some of the identified pitchers in the article, Lester’s work ethic didn’t trail off as the Sox slumped through September.

“Lester was not part of any of this,” said one of the sources. “He worked his ass off right to the end.”

The Globe report stated:

Sources said [Josh] Beckett, Lester and [John] Lackey, who were joined at times by [Clay] Buchholz, began the practice late in 2010. The pitchers not only continued the routine this year, sources said, but they joined a number of teammates in cutting back on their exercise regimens despite appeals from the team’s strength and conditioning coach Dave Page.

“It’s hard for a guy making $80,000 to tell a $15 million pitcher he needs to get off his butt and do some work,’’ one source said.

“For Beckett, Lester, and Lackey, the consequences were apparent as their body fat appeared to increase and pitching skills eroded. When the team needed them in September, they posted a combined 2-7 record with a 6.45 earned run average, the Sox losing 11 of their 15 starts.”

Lester finished the season at 15-9 with a 3.47 ERA, pitching 191 2/3 innings. The Red Sox lost five of his last six starts, with the lefty totaling a 5.40 ERA during that stretch.

    Oh PLEASE! Good cover up!

  • http://weei Merry

Really? Boy, I guess he was not one of the pitchers that I saw in that idiotic music video. If you are not one of them why are lumping (literally) yourself with them. Obviously did a very poor job of working his a$$ off until the end. Have no sympathy for any of them. This bunch will reap what they have sown. I feel very badly that I do not and probably will not ever again feel the same about the Red Sox. I am disgusted and will not spend my hard earned money of anything to do with them. Very sad.

Listen I think Lester is salvageable but to say this guy works his ass off when it takes him 2 months every year to warm up to the point he’s a decent pitcher and then to collapse the last month tells me this is a guy with conditioning hangups. Guy should be competing for a Cy Young every year but instead he doesn’t start pitching well until late June. He’s not Beckett but he definitely needs to be working out from November on and not picking up his first weight and ball when pitchers and catchers report in March.

  • Blob

    Who’s the source? Jon Lester?

  • Mike

    Evidently, someone “misremembered,” huh?

  • Your Mom

Oh, so now we’re leaving Lester out…. WEAK!!! This whole thing is an epic fail.

  • loupat

Sox just got the 2 major problems out.Get a good manager and build up the pitching in the minors and things will get better.I also believe ownership has a right to be pissed at both Theo and Tito, both given a ton of money to do jobs that they didn’t do.I hold them both responsible for this mess.

  • Hub

The longer the likes of Beckett and Lester go without commenting on the accusations against them the longer it will take them to get back the support of the fans.

  • Cousin Joey P

I think Lester is salvageable…same can’t be said for Beckett and Lackey. Those two bad seeds have to go. I hated Lackey when he was in Anaheim. The more I got to know him, the more I hated him. Beckett and Lackey apparently brought out the worst in each other…let’s hope they both wind up someplace else mext season. I know I find it very hard to root for either one of these guys.

  • Anguillaman

I wonder how all these beer drinking , fried chicken eating pitchers will react next season when the word comes out all of these stories were “leaked” by Sox management.

  • former fan

Booooo…this is just more damage control by mgmt… trying to protect whatever assets they think they still have. I really HATE these owners. Such patronizing fools who treat the fans like idiots. They should take their “organizational philosophy” and shove it up their collective arses. There is NOTHING likable about this organization anymore… except Pedroia.

  • Jesse

Well get rid of Lackey he is the bad see…keep Beckett he is still a great pitcher..he will be fine next year. All this started when Lackey came to the Red sox..he is trouble. He needs to go now!!!

  • Tony

This is a spin job to save Lester in the eyes of fans. He gained a lot of weight and i am sure he was a part of the Fried Chicken Crew.

  • John

Sox fans need to wait until all of the facts are in before making judgements
as to the causes of the poor play in September. As in any story, early reports tend to be inaccurate. In time we will learn the reasons for the collapse. Concerning John Lester, I hope that if he was involved in giving less than an admirable effort for whatever reason, he realizes that this was a mistake and in the future acts more like the competitor that he really is. For many of us that have had cancer, we admire John for his victory over the desease, and look forward to that same effort for the rest of his career.

  • unbiased-fred

Bradford when are you going to stop being a sycophant to the ownership. Man Up.

  • Steve_in_MA

Lester may be salvageable, but I don’t believe for a moment that he didn’t fully join in the cancerous attitude these pitchers created. Lester gained 20 lbs. since spring training. Lackey gained about 30. Beckett gained as much as 40. Their pre- and post-season pictures don’t lie. There is no doubt, whatsoever, that the three stopped or deeply curtailed their workout programs in favor of opening a sports pub in our lockerroom. Those pictures, alone, substantiate treasonous behavior on their parts, without relying on the uncorroborated allegations in the Globe’s article.

The disrespect and disloyalty that these three showed to their manager, fellow players, the fans and the organization cannot be tolerated. These are firing offenses, and they generally must be fired if our team is to have any credibility in the future.

Right now, I want Beckett and Lackey gone, at any and all costs. They are tumors. They are betrayers. They are garbage. If we can’t trade them, release them. We need to eat their salaries, if necessary. I want to see a very contrite Lester before I believe he is salvageable. Otherwise, he needs to suffer the same fate as the others. I hope he is man enough to come forward, apologize and promise to never do such things ever again.

I would rather us finish in the basement with journeymen and young guys who care about winning and give it their all, than suffer the debasement of appeasing these self-centered, pompous punks.

Lester participated “occasionally, but very infrequent”

I’m just a little bit pregnant

  • The Colonel

Rob, the next time you try to prop somebody up don’t use the “after” picture next to the blog entry…

  • Joey

Coddled, spoiled, privileged, entitled divas…this is the most out of shape pitching staff I’ve ever seen in my life. To the Chicken Chompers in the rotation you can add relievers Fat Albers, Bobby Jenks, Franklin Morales, going all the way back to Dennys Reyes…Francona’s Country Club. And let’s keep in mind the prices they charge to watch these alleged Professional Athletes…the whole thing’s pathetic.

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... Kevin

Well, they did it to me. I never thought it would happen to me, but after this year’s collapse, it happened. Yep,
Until I can trust the team again, I’m now demoting myself
To pink hat status. I can’t take the disappointment so I’ll be tuning in for playoffs only if/when they make it
Again. It’s sad but baseball is too much of a commitment to be kicked in the balls. This past Septmember collapse and the playoff series against
The Angels when the sox got swept. I’m done. Where’s my pink hat? Whose my fav player u ask? Oh ,
The catcher of course, Ellsbury!! He’s so hot……..(sigh)

Rob Bradford- Bought and paid for by the RS….

  • Sean

I’m glad no one here appears to be buying this load of crap. Lester’s performance was just as bad as the rest of those losers. He looked like he was barely able to throw 80 pitches by the end of the season, huffing and puffing his way through the beatings.

Its going to take more than a good start to earn me back as a fan. I need to see a complete start to finish set of performances to know that these guys mean business and are worth my time and effort to care again… and even then I’m not sure I can totally buy it just over a one year stretch.

They don’t deserve the team, the city/fans and certainly not their over inflated pay checks.

  • jward23

What a surprise. Tomase broke the drinking thing using anonymous sources. Then the shitstorm built up like Katrina. We’re now getting into the spin phase so more anonymous sourced stories appear. Wait till next spring. The only constant in journalism in this town is the firm belief that Sox fans have short memories and will believe anything.

  • Gray

Rob are you sure you were not enjoying some Beer and Chicken playing the ol’ 360 with the boys?

So your “sources” are now contradicting Hohler’s “sources”. Rob, you seem like a decent fellow. How did you get into this line of work? Why should we believe anything any of you so-called journalists write. You’re all a bunch of back-stabbing snakes.

  • Bob from out of town

It appears MLB needs to start random fried chicken and beer testing.

I suppose Lester may have chewed on the chicken and gargled the beer without actually ingesting them, like those who have smoked without inhalng.

  • HooHaa

Lay off Beckett. He’s the only one who beat Tampa when they came to Fenway in September – strking out 7. Had ANY other pitcher won the other 3 games, Boston would be in the playoffs.

  • http://Enteryourwebsite... Gerry

interesting, isn’t it, that Hohler’s innuendo filled hatchet job is taken as factual and Rob’s piece, quoting at least equally reliable ‘sources’ is seen as heresy. Chill out. We just don’t KNOW what happened yet.

  • Bob from out of town

Wasn’t Wade Boggs a proponent of a diet including a lot of chicken and beer.

OK Beckett and Lackey’s excuse is excessive intake of beer and chicken and lack of adequate physical training.

    Apparently, Lester just sucks.

In other words, none of this is worth another moment of consideration.

  • joker

Lay off Beckett he is a great pitcher? These are some of the dumbest fans in all of baseball. Beckett isn’t close to a great pitcher. He has been in the league 11 years won 20 games once, 10 complete games, 5 shutouts, only pitched 200 innings 3 times, gives up 24 homer;s a year. Averages 15 wins and 10 losses. He is out of shape, and could care less about winning since he already has his money. He is always injured in some part of the season. Plus he is a punk. They would be much better with this guy out of town

  • Annoyed

I think Lester is as much responsible for this as anyone. At this point in their respective careers, he is the biggest name of all involved and should shoulder the majority of the blame. If he was not at least an equal part of the group, then he is guilty by not using his influence to standing up against the rest of them. Lester is more than just a follower, he is a leader and I think it is clear where that is getting them.

  • http://weei Susan

I am so hoping that Rob Bradford’s report is true. Lester seems to have it all…beautiful wife, precious little boy. He got a second chance at life…why set out to ruin it. I can’t forget the no hitter…the exchange between him and Tito…I wish he would speak. Rob…get him on the air or on the record. I also really thought he and Pedroia were tight. Knowing Dustin’s value system, I hope he would slap sense into his friend if need be. Please get the whole story. Thank you!
