| Hot Stove: Tigers don’t expect to have Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen back | 11.02.11 at 10:07 am ET |
After winning their first division title since 1987, the Tigers likely will enter next season without two of their most recognizable faces over the last decade.
Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said on Tuesday that he does not expect to re-sign right fielder Magglio Ordonez and second baseman Carlos Guillen.
“We had pretty much told Magglio and Carlos during last month, that we would doubt they’d be back,” Dombrowski said.
Ordonez was one of the best hitters in the MLB during his first four years with Tigers, who he joined in 2005. But it has been a struggle for the outfielder over the last few years, as Ordonez has been hampered by injuries. He played just 92 games in 2011, batting .255 with five home runs and 32 RBIs. Ordonez’ season ended when he re-fractured his ankle during Detroit’s playoff season with the Rangers.
Guillen has been with the Tigers since the 2004 season. Like Ordonez, it has been a slow decline for Guillen. After batting .320 through his first three seasons with Detroit, Guillen’s average has gone down every year, bottoming out at .232 this past season. Guillen only played 28 games in 2011, as he spent the first half of the season recovering from microfracture surgery on his knee. He finally returned to the lineup in July but missed more games between August and September after injuring his wrist.
