After Bobby Valentine was introduced as the new Red Sox manager on Thursday, team president/CEO Larry Lucchino suggested that the presence of the former Mets skipper in Boston could “add a little bit of kerosene” to the rivalry.
On Friday, Yankees GM Brian Cashman offered Valentine a match.
Cashman, who on Sunday will rappel down the side of a building in Stamford, Conn., as part of the city’s “Heights of Lights” festival — something that he will be doing for the second straight year — suggested that he would like to see Stamford native Valentine join him in the daredevil feat next year.
“I publicly challenge Bobby Valentine to join me on the building,” Cashman told reporters on Friday while engaged in a practice run down a building in Stamford’s Landmark Square. “Landmark Square, first week of December. Be there. 2012.”
Cashman, who knows Valentine well from his time as manager of the New York Mets from 1996-2002, praised both the new Sox skipper and his predecessor.
“I know Bobby, and I know he’s fully qualified to handle anything and everything that’s going to come his way up there in Boston,” Cashman told reporters. “I didn’t like seeing Terry Francona in that dugout because Terry was outstanding at what he did.
“At the same time, I don’t like seeing Bobby Valentine in that dugout, either. Because I know what Bobby is, and what he can do and will do. When you hire someone you want them to be all-in…Bobby is all-in on the Red Sox now.”
