DALLAS — The Red Sox face financial restraints this winter that have kept them out of the high-end free-agent market. Nonetheless, the must-see theater of agent Scott Boras holding court at the winter meetings still touched upon a number of topics of interest to the Sox.
Among them:
– Boras said that the door will remain open to talking with the Sox about a return by catcher Jason Varitek for a 16th season in Boston.
“Ben and I have had a conversation about that,” said Boras. “We’re in the process of working on it. I think that he has an interest in playing for Boston, and I think they have an interest in looking into that subject.”
– J.D. Drew, who concluded his five-year, $70 million deal with the Sox this year, has not decided definitively to retire. However, the number of potential fits for the outfielder are limited.
“He may play for the right team, but he’s very selective about the teams he would play for,” said Boras.
The agent said that Drew is drawing some interest.
“He has some clubs that have interest in him, but whether or not he plays is something we’re going to have to define down the road,” Boras said.
–Ryan Madson, the top remaining free agent closer on the market, will decline the Phillies’ offer of salary arbitration and pursue the free agent market. Though several teams that were already in the closer market have already moved to acquire players to fill that need, Boras insisted that Madson — a 31-year-old who had a 2.37 ERA and 32 saves for the Phillies last year, his first season as a closer — still has a market.
“I think a lot of teams have made movements in a direction to get a back-end guy, but I don’t think there’s many closers available like Ryan Madson at his age and such,” said Boras. “There’s still, I think, a grand need for that type of player, particularly if you intend to be a postseason club.”
Asked if he felt that the number of options was dwindling, Boras quipped, “I’m kind of in the musical chairs game. I kind of find that I only need one chair.”
Boras said that his other closing client who could potentially be of interest to the Red Sox, Francisco Rodriguez, is still weighing whether to accept the Brewers’ offer of salary arbitration (something that would result in more money but a setup role) or pursue his free agency. Rodriguez has until midnight EST to make his decision.
