Report: Red Sox agree to deal with 16-year-old pitcher Jose Almonte 07.02.12 at 9:04 am ET
By Alex Speier

According to the indefatigable Ben Badler of Baseball America, the Red Sox have agreed to a deal with Dominican right-hander Jose Almonte, a 16-year-old who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds, for a $610,000 signing bonus. Badler, in his overview of the top 20 international prospects this year (a list in which Almonte ranked No. 17), described the right-hander thusly:

“It has been hard for some scouts to get a look at Almonte recently, but scouts who saw him early in the year liked him because of his projectable, lanky frame, smooth delivery and good arm action. He touched 90-91 mph early in the year, though more recent reports had him topping out at 89. He has some projection and could throw harder down the road. He’s flashed ability to throw a solid curveball with downward bite, but it’s inconsistent and he’s still learning to throw it for strikes. Several sources believe the Red Sox will be the team that ends up signing Almonte.”

Disgusting…I’m sorry but you mean to tell me there are no AMERICAN kids…there are millions of American boys who will never get the chance to play AMERICAN’S PAST TIME because MLB insists on going to the Dominican, SoAmerica, Japan, AUSTRALIA to find baseball players.  Despicable.  I also think that drafting out of high school should be banned.  GO TO COLLEGE AND GET AN EDUCATION.

You could not be more off base.

They can’t get American kids until they are 18.  They want to get prospects into their system ASAP. They also don’t have video games and McDonalds epidemics in the Dominican, so all kids do is baseball.  You don’t have to look hard in the majors to see that many of the best players are from the Dominican.  That’s why they sign kids from foreign countries

There are millions of American boys who couldn’t shine Dominican ball players shoes because they are too busy complaining about what they don’t have while sitting around getting fat.  These kids often come from nothing and are fun to watch.

You are right though, the Red Sox would be far better off without Dominican born David Ortiz.

It might be time for you to head back to Foxnews.com, Graywolf.

MLB would–and-does–gladly sign U.S. boys of similar ability.  U.S. fans want their teams to win more than they want them to be “Made in the USA”.  I for one love to see players from all over, it’s part of what makes baseball a great game.  It might even create a little more understanding between countries.  (Also, I believe South America is America too.)

It’s amazing what happens when you remove racism from the equation and everyone is on a level playing field and has to use talent, skill, and determination to get ahead.

  • O na na whats my name?

A bunch of racists around here.

In fact the Red Sox are one of the least active team in Latin America when you factor in their financial resources and how much they spend. When they do spend they spend too much for the wrong stuff ei defense.

ridicolous comments by only white people… red sox are better off without david ortiz?… his the only all star this year…

AT FIRST I AGREED WITH GRAYWOLF BUT AFTER LISTENING TO YOU OTHER FOLKS YOUR RIGHT IT IS INTERESTING TO SEE PLAYERS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES PLAY BASEBALL. DOMINICAN,VENEZUALOR,I LIKE THE COMMENT SOUTH AMERICA IS AMERICA I LIKE THAT .

Apparently ignorance is bliss and Greywolf is proof. Why don’t you whip out your family tree and tell me where your ancestors come from because I’m sure you’re 100% American. I love people like you who have no idea what this country is about, yet like to speak as if they do. Buy a history book.
