Aaron Cook will take the mound Wednesday afternoon to wrap up a three-game set against the Athletics, the last game of the Red Sox’ West Coast trip.
Cook (2-1, 4.32 ERA) pitched a complete-game shutout in his last start, allowing two hits as the Red Sox won 5-0 over the Mariners on Friday. In his last two starts combined, the 33-year-old tossed 14 innings of two-run baseball.
Cook’s only loss of the season came in his May 5 season debut. He threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed six earned runs in an 8-2 loss to the Orioles.
The righty has a history with four Oakland batters, including former Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp. He has faced Jonny Gomes the most. In 14 plate appearances against Cook, Gomes is batting .500 with three home runs and six RBIs.
Taking the mound for Oakland will be A.J. Griffin, making the third start of his career and season. Griffin (0-0, 1.50) has pitched 11 consecutive scoreless innings but has yet to get a decision. The Athletics are 1-1 in games Griffin has started.
The 24-year-old threw six innings of shutout baseball in his last start, which the Athletics lost 4-3 against the Rangers. Griffin started his first MLB game on June 24, pitching six innings and allowing two runs as the Athletics defeated the Giants, 4-2.
Griffin, who has never pitched against the Red Sox, has not faced any current Boston batters.
