Wednesday’s Red Sox matchups: Josh Beckett vs. Derek Holland 07.25.12 at 9:33 am ET
By

Josh Beckett

The Red Sox will send Josh Beckett to the mound Wednesday in Texas to try to turn around a team that has been reeling since its walk-off win against the White Sox last Thursday.

Like Jon Lester, Beckett has had a disappointing season, entering Wednesday’s game with a 5-8 record and 4.53 ERA in 16 starts this season. Before his win against the Rays on July 15, Beckett’s last victory came on May 20 against the Phillies.

The key for Beckett in the game will be to get out of the first inning unscathed. The 32-year-old right-hander has a 10.69 ERA in first innings this year and has allowed first-inning runs in each of his past three starts, including a five-run first inning against the Yankees on July 6.

Josh Hamilton has crushed Beckett throughout his career, recording two homers and a .471 batting average in 19 at-bats against the Red Sox righty.

Beckett will be matched up against Derek Holland, who defeated him 6-3 earlier this season at Fenway Park. In that game, Holland struck out seven while only allowing four hits to earn his second win of the season.

Holland is 6-5 with a 4.84 ERA, coming off a loss to the Angels on Friday. Holland, who allowed two home runs in the loss, has given up 14 homers on the year.

While the 25-year-old lefty has dominated most of the Red Sox lineup in his career, a surprising good matchup for the Red Sox is Nick Punto, who has a 1.000 slugging percentage in his six career at-bats against Holland.Red Sox vs. Holland (LHP)

It be great if Paul Pierce broke both his legs so we do not have to watch the scum bag he sucks

    • tom and paul the same moron

Shut up idiot and take your alter ego “paul” and go play in traffic douch e.

  • Keebs

Where the hell is Lee, Wilcox & Randolph? He needs to start playing these guys. That’s what I hate sometimes about the playoffs. The rotation gets smaller & smaller. It didn’t even feel like a playoff game.

    Celtics eat shi”"”
The worst players in the world play for the Celtics that’s why no one wants to play for them

Do you have anything else to do other than troll ? Pete, bill, tom, mike whatever you call yourself ? Total idiot.

the celtics may be playing terrible right now BUT that doesn’t mean that you have the right to speak cruel words unto them.. can’t you see that these guys are still fighting even though the team suffered major disadvantage due to injuries..

instead of throwing some criticism, why not show some respect to those who are trying their best to accomplish something.. i still have faith in these celtic team..

i guess you were always messing things up while growing up and your parents didn’t put effort in supporting and believing in you that’s why you are acting this way.. you are just jealous ’cause even though this team is playing bad, there are still some fans who haven’t given up on them (the thing that your parents didn’t do to you, am i right?)..

Boston Sport teams are finished. It pains me to say that but is the true. They had around 10 years of winning now is time to rebuild. Celtics are an old and washed up team. no one in that starting lineup averages 20 points a game. They just cant shoot. How can you expect to win like that? Patriots have a quarterback who although is one of the best has just 1 or 2 years left at the highest level. Red Sox although a nice start havent got those special players like before Manny, Ortiz in his prime, Pedro and Nomar cornerstone players who were stars. They have an average team now with hitters that will strikeout at any given time. They are a team that if everything goes well may qualify for the postseason but just like the Celtics will flame out in the first round too.
