Trade Deadline: Nationals, Brewers reportedly interested in Kelly Shoppach 07.31.12 at 1:34 pm ET
By Stephen Hewitt

Kelly Shoppach

Kelly Shoppach hit a triple and scored a run in Monday night’s 7-3 win over the Tigers, and it may have been his last game as a member of the Red Sox.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweeted Tuesday morning that both the Nationals and Brewers are interested in trading for the Red Sox’ backup catcher as Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline looms.

Shoppach, who has spot started behind everyday catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia this season, has played well as a backup all season. In 42 games, he’s hitting .261 with five home runs, 15 RBIs, 11 doubles and his first two career triples.

Shoppach was signed to a one-year, $1.4 million deal before this season and is owed about $470,000 for the remainder of the season, making him easy trade bait. He began his career with the Red Sox in 2005 before stints with the Indians and Rays.

The game was “somewhat” meaningless. They are in the playoffs. Personally, I thing the coaches had “nothing to lose” and that Coach B was more intent on looking ahead. It’s too bad about losing ground to Denver though.

Well if the Broncos win out and the Texans win just one, the Pats will get the 3 seed. That’s an extra playoff game for them and a loss of homefield advantage, so this game was pretty important.

People need to stop saying that all of the balls bounced the 49ers way, that’s just not true. SF turned the ball over 2 times pretty deep in NE territory (one being the fumble at the Pats 5), and also turned it over on downs inside the Pats 30 as well. It could have very easily been a score of 38 or 45 to 3 in the 3rd quarter. The Pats only lost because they didn’t show up in the first half and couldn’t take advantage of those huge breaks like SF did. They get a lot of credit for fighting back into it, but the truth is they could have easily won the game despite a few bad breaks.

I agree.  Also, there’s an outside chance you score two touchdowns and win the game instead of tying.

I just love when the pundits write this speculative crap. Like JM’s article today that KG is on his last legs.. Yes Father Time is catching up….but perhaps these guys need some help? There is no Rondo…there is no Sullinger. There is no real center for that matter. KG was +16 last game. He’s not the problem.
