Poll: What should Red Sox give up for John Farrell? 09.07.12 at 9:37 am ET
By WEEI

With John Farrell and his Blue Jays coming to town this weekend, the talk and speculation about the former Red Sox pitching coach taking over as Sox manager for 2013 is gaining steam. But, as pointed out in Rob Bradford’s recent column, the path to securing Farrell’s services might be a tricky one.

Farrell is under contract through the ’13 season, and with the Blue Jays maintaining a policy that doesn’t allow lateral moves to another organization, it would appear the only chance of the 50-year-old switching teams would be via a trade.

The following is an opportunity to voice your opinion regarding exactly how much you believe Farrell to be worth to the Red Sox.

Whom would you trade for John Farrell?

Right now there is more talent on the BlueJays team then the Red Sox and they still have a worst record.  I don’t understand the medias lovefest with this guy.

Why not trade Valentine for Farrell?  The Jays aren’t exactly thrilled with Farrell and he has only one year left on his contract.  The Sox pick up the payment on Valentine’s contract.  The Jays can keep him or terminate him.  If the Jays really don’t want to extend Valentine, then they can rid himself of the last year of his contract.  If they want to hire their own manager, they can then simply release Valentine and the Sox are still responsible for paying him.  They start fresh and relieve themselves of any financial obligations for either Valentine or Farrell.  Don’t understand why the Sox would want to give up on field talent for Farrell.  There should be enough qualified, viable candidates to fill the managerial position, but if they want Farrell that much, this is a creative option to consider.

Blue Jay obviously will have the leverage to Farrell Trade to Boston But would Red Sox give up their good players just for a manager from the last place team.   Red Sox should look for another alternative whereby they can get a manager without a trade that cost them. I dont think it is wise to give up their players.

Bobby Valentine came in to do the job of getting these divas to do their job.  The players obviously are not happy with the coach.  Who is running this team?  Not Bobby, but the inmates.
These players will not do what is expected of them, will not attend funerals and they “claim” they were best friends with Mr Pesky and they all slapped him, the owners and the family in the face.
These are the same individuals that threw Tito under the bus, then had the nerve to be buddy old pals again when Tito went to the clubhouse.  They got this manager fired and the same unfortunately is going to happen with Bobby V.
There maybe no I in team, but there sure in hell is a ME.

I don’t see the sides agreeing on compensation.  I see Toronto putting stock in how it makes them look like a stepping stone to feed a divisional rival and will ask for too much in return.  If I were the Red Sox, I would give up something small.  Here are a few possibilities, and if anything, they might be giving up too much.  I think Mortensen makes sense, since next year he is out of options and the bullpen has a lot of guys and a lot of AAA depth.  Maybe Hazelbaker or Hassan since they are Rule 5 eligible but not great OF prospects.  Anything more than one of those guys or a guy of similar value, I would say no.

Ya I agree with you. I love Hassan but he isnt gonna be more then a 4th OF an Hazelbaker also. Mortenson I love an personally aint dealing. But he does make some sense. Stewart an Beato are two guys Id give up, Steven Wright, Brock Huntzinger, Michael Ohlmstead an a couple others mybe. Nothing of much value. We are stocked with RP’s in the minors an Majors. We could deal one or two of the lesser ones an we would be ok.

    Michael Olmsted, 25 yrs old, 14 games in Double AA…20 innings…31 K’s!!, 7 BB’s…
ERA of 0.00.  Why would anyone want to give him away??
    Josh Fields, 27 yrs old, 10 games in Triple AAA..13.2 innings…19 K’s!!, 2 BB’s…
ERA of 0.00.  Why would anyone want to give him away??
Let Ciriaco/Aviles play SS till Bogaerts is ready in 2014…give away Iglesias!!
But, Farrell would be great back in Boston…need all the pitching help we can get!!

After watching Bard give up the eventual winning runs on a 2 run shot on the ninth…maybe Toronto would take Bard and Iglesias for Farrell.
No way do you trade Mortenson!!
