Another outfielder signs as Melky Cabrera heads to Blue Jays for two years, $16 million 11.16.12 at 3:42 pm ET
By Alex Speier

Outfielder Melky Cabrera has reportedly reached agreement on a two-year, $16 million deal with the Blue Jays. (AP)

Free-agent outfielder Melky Cabrera, who put up huge numbers in 2012 before his season came to an end due to a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy, agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with the Blue Jays. Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com was the first to report the deal.

Cabrera hit .346 with a .390 OBP, .516 slugging percentage and .906 OPS in 113 games for the Giants. Prior to his tremendous 2012 season, he had a career line of .275/.331/.398/.729 in parts of seven years with the Yankees, Braves and Royals. Cabrera turned 28 in August.

With his deal with the Blue Jays, Cabrera became the second prominent free-agent outfielder in recent days to sign with a club, joining Torii Hunter, whose two-year, $26 million deal with the Tigers became official on Friday.

From a Red Sox perspective, given that the team needs two corner outfielders, the disappearance of a pair of options is a less-than-ideal occurrence. Still, the development is hardly surprising, given that Hunter appeared set on signing with either the Tigers or Rangers and Cabrera, according to one industry source, had narrowed the markets he was considering in his return from his suspension. So, the Red Sox were hardly surprised by the fact that neither player ended up with them. At the same time, the fact that Cabrera landed with a division rival — one that has already bolstered its roster with Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle — suggests that the Sox have an even steeper challenge facing them with regards to a Toronto team that is solidifying an ever-deeper roster.

Even so, the outfield market was likely the area where the greatest wealth of options exists this offseason. Among free agent outfielders who remain on the board are Josh Hamilton (though Rob Bradford reports that the Sox’ interest in him is being overstated), Nick Swisher, Cody Ross, B.J. Upton, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, Angel Pagan, Ryan Ludwick, Shane Victorino and others.

Cherington talking about “kicking tires” and “gathering information” is getting old.  He doesnt work for the DMV.  Extending Pedey would be nice, but 3 yrs til FA, shouldnt that be put on the back burner til say January.  It would be nice to hear some news of the Sox actively pursuing a player.  Cabrera wouldve been nice fit for Sox.  A bit more money/3rd year and we couldve had him.  Instead, Jays got a bargain.

Accurate opine,You are so right put Pedys’ contract on the back burner, get something done, I’m beginning to think the club is in real financial trouble.

  • Tonyfranco

We could not have signed Cabrera.  He said himself that he wanted to go to a team where he could focus on playing and proving that the PEDs weren’t an issue.  He didn’t want a 1-year deal deal because he felt that would be too much pressure.  And he didn’t want something longer than 2 years because he wanted to show he was worthy of a big contract (one that he felt he would have gotten absent the PED test).

Something to consider and remember.  The Yankees were anxious to get rid of him due to his negative influence on Cano.  The Braves were all to happy to see him go.  The Royals didn’t even offer him a contract despite a very good year.  And the Braves elected not to include him on their playoff roster when they could have.  AND they didn’t bother to offer him a contract after all that occurred.

Where there is smoke, there is fire.  It’s a good thing that the Red Sox stayed away.  Sorry, but Ben got this one right.

“Eyes and feet go hand in hand man!” Can’t wait for more Talib-isms

  • Koby

    YESSSS, but what about Freeney/Abraham!!!

  • John

I’m happy with this signing, I’d love to see what he can do once he is in playing shape and more experienced in the system. Now bring in Pollard and call it a Secondary.

  • kljafds

Great move. Getting him on a one year deal is almost too good to be true.

  • Troll Hunter

Now just add either Freeney, Abraham or Elvis and this offseason is a success.

    Why just one year?

Now get Elvis and I’ll be happy and content.

  • fatchance

Great deal. Get to work with the strength and conditioning coaches and get that hamstring strengthened!

Pollard is a Strong safety and we already signed one in Wilson.

I would love Abraham here, he seems to fit more what the Patriots do defensively.

They offered him a 5year deal too but he took the one year instead

Where are all the morons/idiots who have been bad mouthing Bill and the Pats for the last couple of days after two days of free agency?!? Just stay off the bandwagon you bunch of pink hat losers. At leastwWait until after the draft before you make any more judgments. Again they still need to sign either Abraham or Freeney to make free agency a success but what they have done so far is not too bad.

  • jj

This is what they need. They will have a top offense no matter what. Need Gronk to stay injury free. Its defense that has been the issue.

  • redsoxchris

The Pats have made great moves so far, but there is still one problem. The Ravens beat us last year by jamming the middle and daring Brady to throw deep. We NEED a tall, fast, deep threat. Sanders is another small receiver. We have to address this issue. If not, unfortunately we will be disappointed again. I’m a huge Pats fan and not a GM, but this is just what I observed from last year.

Right on my man….Typical alarmists and revisionists….”IT’S ALL BAD”……..This team is making some nice moves….the lack of “big names” makes people nervous and so predictable……when the weather gets cold and guys are dropping like flies, Bill will have 52 guys to call upon while those idiots who sign the big names for huge bucks have nothing left in the tank….and it ain’t over….

Now a 1 year contract makes sense. Keeps him in line and doesn’t tie the team down long term with a potential injury-prone guy with stability issues. In essence it’s another contract year for him. Good move. Much better than the $8-9 million we thought he might cost before free agency.

  • Pat

questioning a team that seems to have it together for most of the season but can’t close the deal when it counts makes us bandwagon pink hat losers. Yep, you’re a sheep. baahhh, baaahhhh….

  • fab4ever

“Can’t close the deal when it counts”…MORON! There are winners, there are losers…and then there are players. The Pats compete, year in, year out. I’d rather have them involved than sitting watching someone else…if you can’t grasp that concept, then yes, you’re a pink hat loser….

  • NEP24

You don’t need nor want Pollard. Other than beating up on PATs cause he CAN NOT stand them, he mediocre, not anything special at all. I rather Tavon Wilson learn from season under Wilson than waste signing guy who only beats up on the team he HATES.

  • Troll Hunter

No, questioning a team two days into free agency makes morons, like yourself, crying about the sky falling a pink hat loser. Weird you mention sheep when it was real easy to trash the team and Bill when they let Welker sign with Denver. As I stated earlier, at least wait until after the draft to judge how this team has improved or gotten worse if the case may be.

  • NEP24

WHY? How does he fit into defensive scheme now and in future? He is TINY- 5’11…
You have Chandler Jones already plus Ninkovich and Cunningham wasn’t awful but no saying he is an answer. No you want to get a DE like in mold of Seymour to put on other side of Wilfork and bookend with Jones. A DE that is solid against the run and lil bit more than solid putting pressure OB.

  • BubbaSpeaks

I agree 100%. Think Andre Carter.

  • RP2151

Love him this year but that is it. He will hit the free market next year and pats will not go after him, let’s hope he plays his butt off before free agency

  • rebelman

It’s gonna take a whole season and maybe two to see if these acquisitions/cuts made the pats better. As good as our existing talent is; Gronk, Hernie,Talib, Edleman and such, let’s remember it’s how long you stay on the field. No pink hat loser HEALTHY during a season. We just lost one of the toughest most durable recievers in all of football here, just a cautious guy. Also alot of age coming in here. BB hit paydirt with an old veteran Andre Carter who exceeded expectations. If that guy hadn’t gotten hurt in the end, wow, things at the show could have been different even w/o the “catch.” I hope that we get lucky like that again with someone like Freeney, etc. I loved Freeney in the past, but can bring it still? We all know that injuries are a part of the game. Let’s just hope there are not big name, SEASON ending injuries, and let’s hope that our injured all get well at the right time, as happened with the Ravens-playoffs/sb.

  • Troll Hunter

I agree, but questioning is one thing but go read some of the posts in the Welker story. You have “fans” wanting to fire Bill or saying the team is done. BTW the Patriots save about 2.5 million on the cap by signing Amendola(sp?) and not Welker so that factors in as well.

  • WHO CARES

I’m glad to see Talib back, great job Pats
