Fort Myers mayor Randy Henderson: ‘Would have been smarter to let the Red Sox move on’ 11.25.12 at 9:17 am ET
By

Fort Myers mayor Randy Henderson told the News-Press that the Lee County region would have been better served to permit the Red Sox to leave the county rather than paying for the construction of a new facility for the Sox, JetBlue Park, which opened in 2012. The decision in 2008 to fund a new Red Sox spring training facility put Lee County on the hook not only for most of the construction expenses related to JetBlue but also obligated the region to fund improvements in the Twins’ facility in Fort Myers. Meanwhile, Lee County is still paying off its debts for the construction of City of Palms Park — the currently vacant facility where the Sox played before moving to JetBlue.

Lee County now faces more than $436 million in ballpark expenses over the next 32 years, according to the News-Press.

“It would have been smarter to let the Red Sox move on,” Henderson told the News-Press. “I would debate that we wouldn’t be any worse off, in fact, I think we would be better off.”

The article also suggested that there is little optimism about the possibility of wooing the Washington Nationals to move to the vacated City of Palms Park.

Same thing as Rhode Island getting pissed off that they loaned Curt Schilling money. Next time think twice before signing the paperwork.

What I want to know is why cities are ever paying for stadiums, especially spring training stadiums. If the owners and teams want new stadiums, they should call on private investors and their own group to foot the bill and not put it on taxpayers. It really worked out great when Miami put up millions of dollars for their new great team and stadium.

Why should billionaire owners constantly be expecting government stadium handouts like this anyhow?  Quit using public pressure to try and get idiot politicians to make decisions that are wrong for their cities.  Build your own damn stadiums.

If Bosox don’t spend $$$$ on what few free agents are available out there, they may be moving to Ft. Myers.
    Love Ft Myers and Potts

Major capital expenditures to provide a place where 100-200 (moistly) spoiled brats can PRACTICE!!!  As Allen Iverson said, it’s “PRACTICE”  - that’s all it is!!  And the fact that, for some reason, people will PAY for the privilege of watching PRACTICE!! ??  It’s hard enough to watch most of these clowns during the regular season!!!

The simple answer is to find out who down there benefits financially from the land deals, construction contracts and upkeep. Don’t blame the teams. Sounds like too many snouts in the trough.
