Hot Stove: Royals manager Ned Yost on Wil Myers rumors and KC’s pursuit of a starter 12.03.12 at 5:45 pm ET
By Alex Speier

Royals manager Ned Yost suggested that outfielder Wil Myers — Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 after hitting 37 homers in Double-A and Triple-A as a 21-year-old — reminds him of a young Dale Murphy, the former Braves center fielder and two-time NL MVP. He suggested that like Murphy, Myers has 30-plus homer potential. Kansas City plans to let him compete for an everyday job in spring training.

That said, in the aftermath of reports (including from WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford) last week that had the Royals considering trade proposals that would send Myers elsewhere for a front-of-the-rotation starter such as Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester or Tampa Bay’s James Shields, Yost also acknowledged that the Royals are open to the possibility of trading top prospects for a pitcher who can anchor their starting staff.

“Absolutely,” Yost said of the possibility of trading a top prospect for a starter. “But I can give you like nine more scenarios. … We’re looking at all of our options. We feel like we’re really close to being able to compete, and we’re looking at every option that we can. [Royals GM Dayton Moore has] worked really hard over the last five years to fill our minor league system with tremendous prospects that we can use for situations like this. We’re looking at a bunch of different options. One may work out; none may work out. We’re just going to do what’s best for our organization.

“Starting pitching, can’t have enough of it,” he added. “I’d like to have as much as I can get. But at what cost? That’s important to me.”

For now, Yost said, he felt no need to talk to Myers about his spot in the rumor mill.

“We’re talking about stuff, just like all organizations are, we’ve been locked up in our room, going over 90 different scenarios with 40 different players,” said Yost. “They’re just rumors right now.”

I’m not know what’s going on here, but I am quite certain
of WHAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN- Specifically, a one for one Trade Of Wil Myers,
a potential star the Royals can control for 6 years at low money for John
Lester, a pitcher who has “scuffled around” on the mound for over a year,
and who is under contract for just one year at 12MM with a team option at
$13Million for a second– IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.. The Royals aren’t dedicating
20-25 percent of a $61 million payroll (27th out of 30 teams) for Jon Lester
for the next 2 years (maximum)— and they’re absolutely not trading away a top
prospect for the privilege of doing so. I suspect the rumor is nothing more
than a little ritual mutual back-rubbing by the team’s respective GM’s in order
to bubble up interest and discussions about trade possibilities with other
    teams at the winter meetings.

Well. This is awesome. Grats to Vollmer and the Pats, this was very much needed! I’d like to see them re-sign Edelman too, hope it happens

  • ghostoftito

He is so good that no one else wanted him…

  • dpalm789

    worrrrdddddd

  • dave

  • pete from pebble

  • pete from pebble

sign Abraham and get us another nose tackle like vince in the draft!

  • fryguy

he was wanted. he just wasn’t offered anything great long-term because other teams were unsure of his medical issues

  • bcaligor

    Good move on everyones part

  • football wizard

i’d like to see them resign all remaining players they have to and have every player play healthy all 16 regular and plus playoff games. what are the odds? Vollmer, Edleman, Amendola, slim and none!

  • reward

I agree that would be great if they can sign Abrahams & get another nose tackle in the draft, so Vince can show him how to play the position right !

  • tito is a moron

    Shut up moron..

  • fab4ever

…and amen to that as well…

  • fab4ever

Time to hit Stop & Shop and get your bag of pork rinds…maybe you’ll feel better…

  • Bob M

Great job getting Vollmer back, now go get a pass rusher, probably Abraham.

  • Kearao

Anyone know what this deal is for annually? or Adrian wilsons, leon washingtons, and donald jones? I’m curious to what the pats still have left under the cap, because I would like to see them add either Abraham or Freeney and perhaps Grimes aswell. I just cant seem to figure out what they have left under the cap.

  • jj

Great signing but they let Dumervil and Reed get away. WTF. Wheres the DEFENSE?

Good move. A lot of Patriots fans nowadays are sounding like the Red Sox ownership…”we don’t have enough BIG NAMES on our roster. No what we do have is 2nd longest playoff streak, behind Baltimore Ravens, and what was our record the year we missed (w/o Brady) 11-5. Our defensive backfield has improved tremendously, or rookies from last year are just going to get better, and there are still some good FA’s out there with the draft also. Looks like we could have another stellar year ahead.

I always see the name tito, and I know its the idiot who years ago didn’t want Belichick and wanted Pete Carroll instead. Learn something why don’t you!

  • http://profiles.google.com/nikcomp Tony Nicholas

    Pats are going
to need him and more. Ravens got Dumerville. He and Suggs will make
a terror on pass rush which is something that will give is fits. We don’t
do well with man press coverage and a team like Baltimore and Giants that can
generate a pass rush with the front four.

  • Uncle Buck

    Yep. Good move. No question.

  • Steve from RI

thank the lord! last thing we need to do is re-tool the Oline

  • ez

do not bring Adelman back we already got amandola , why have 2 guys at IR one is enough

  • ml112

you say that now, then Brady gets injured and you look like a fool. After QB, the o-line is the most important position on the field…go back to watching Soccer

  • WHO CARES

    GOOD JOB PATS

  • Dano S

The Vollmer signing is excellent because you know what you have probably the best Right
Tackle in Football. Pats Predictions 62.0 Julian Edelman, David Nelson WR Bills,
Sheldon Brown CB Browns, Derek Landri DT Eagles, Kyle Vandon Bosch DE Lions,
    and Gerald McRath LB Titans.
Draft 1 Arthur Brown LB Kansas State 2 Justin Hunter WR Tennessee 3 Darius Slay CB
Miss.State 7 Jawon Jamison RB Rutgers 7 Brandon McGee CB Miami.
Stay Aggresive Pats alot of talented free agents still available.

The Patriots line play on both sides of the ball cost them their last two SB rings and last year’s SB appearance. Patriots went too far on the side of the short finesse passing game and forgot big RB’s and big O Lines wear down defenses better than the hurry up offense. Signing Vollmer and ensuring RT will be all set for the next four year’s was far more important than bringing back Welker.

Now the O Line has only one hole at center or guard, depending on where Dan Connolly is put. If the Pats draft a G or C with their first or second round draft pick this year, their O line could be dominant next season. Allowing their running game to continue to develop and therefore transitioning the Pats from a finesse team to a physical passing team. They need to do this as Brady gets older, much like the Broncos did with Elway. The pats will need to learn how to win with defense, running game and the passing game, instead of just winning by having Brady and Welker complete a million four yard completions. Occasionally, we might have to pick up a third and four by running the ball.

The pats will not have Welker, Woodhead or Lloyd. So the quick finesse style of play is going out the window. I am glad for it. Instead Ridley, or Vereen will get the carries over Woodhead, which means the guy tackling the RB won’t be foaming at the mouth to drill our player. Donald Jones is far more physical than Lloyd. We added Jake Ballard who is a physical player. The last piece the offense needs is just a mean physical interior lineman and a Deion Branch replacement at WR (like Emmanual Sanders).

The defense is far more physical than last year as well. Adding Wilson is exactly what they needed a Rodney Harrison type SS. They brought back Talib who has an attitude. They will also have Chandler Jones and Hightower hopefully improving in year two. Plus Dennard should be out of jail by the playoffs. The only real hole left on defense, is a LE in the role of Ty Warren, a 300 Lbs DE, that can play the two gap and stuff the run, but also get up field and get after the QB on occasion.

What’s your point, that one fumble did not decide the game and was a fluke. How often does a RB the size of Ridley get knocked unconscious by a hit? Not very often. Had the play been better blocked, their Safety wouldn’t have had a free run at our RB. That play stinks of the Patriots being a finesse team getting drilled by a tougher Ravens defense. Exactly why the Patriots need to add beef to the interior O line, and D line then keeping adding size and toughness at running back and receiver.
