An update on CF trade market and Jacoby Ellsbury 12.06.12 at 4:51 pm ET
By Alex Speier

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the second time in roughly a week, the Twins reshaped the market for center fielders. Days after trading Denard Span to the Nationals for a prospect, the team dealt Ben Revere — an excellent defensive outfielder who can hit for average, reach base at a respectable clip and makes up, to a degree, for his power deficiencies by stealing a ton of bases — to the Phillies for starter Vance Worley.

The move impacts the Sox indirectly. The Phillies were viewed as the most likely destination for free agent Michael Bourn, with Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury representing what multiple industry sources expected to be a fallback plan as a trade candidate. Revere not only takes the Phillies out of the market for Ellsbury, but also makes it less likely that another team might make an aggressive trade proposal for him, since Bourn remains on the market if there’s another team a) looking for a center fielder and b) would prefer to spend money rather than giving up big league starting pitching.

It is worth adding that, according to an industry source familiar with the team’s thinking, the Sox would only consider trading Ellsbury if doing so offered a meaningful way of addressing the team’s need for a quality big league starter in 2013. Thus far, while the Sox have received some interest in Ellsbury, offer(s) have been built around prospects rather than sufficient rotation help for 2013 to justify a deal.

That is in line with Sox GM Ben Cherington’s suggestion Wednesday that the team does not plan to trade Ellsbury prior to his final season under team control, before he reaches free agency.

“Our expectation is Jacoby will be here and will be our center fielder,” he said.

would be a nice pickup for TWINS, otherwise—try for GRANDERSON

    We missed our chance!

How about this?  Keep Jacoby, go get Youk back for first base, and trade Napoli for a good pitcher!  With John Farrell on board, and a great core four (Youk, PD, Jacoby, and Big) I’d have something to root for.

According to what Bpras thinks of Ellsbury—teams should be willing to trade half their starting pitchers for him.

there’s a market still there for ells.  Think cicncy, atlanta, and seattle will be desperate once we pick up JH.  They should wait until next year but they may be willing to jump on board after loosing out in every other way this winter.

     Horrid idea

Cincy could work out to be a huge deal.  How about a large package to include Homer Bailey and Frazier coming here for Ellsbury, Webster and Brentz?  I need more coffee.

Joke? Baily for Ells sure but Webster an Brentz for Frazier no thank you an doesnt make sense. Webster for Frazier straight up im saying no because Webster is more valuable to us. Frazier also is there 3B an wouldnt give him up with out getting one back.

Reds make sense tho Baily for Ells is a solid trade. If seriously consider it. Would mybe be the best offer for a young ML SP we could get but a couple of good prospects depending on who they are would make me happier an could be used to get a better SP. Not confident in Baily in Boston lots of question marks imo.

Id take Billy Hamilton for Ells straight up but doubt that one. Cingrani/Stephenson an Travieso, for Ells an Britton. Dont no Reds would take that but I no I would.

Reds seem like a great fit for a Ells trade they have lots of players an prospects who would offer us a good value an would make sense for them to move for Ells who they like an have a need for him. I could make lots of trade ideas that make sense some with us giving a player or prospect or two up for a 2 or three of theres.

RS need to sign Hamilton if he is amendable to a 3-year deal.  That also assumes that Texas is out of the picture.  Keep Elsbury and IF he plays to his potential the RS will have a dynamic outfield and an great trade chip in Elsbury during the season.  Either way, they need to keep him because his trade value right now is minimal after yet another injury-plagued year.
