What we know about the Mike Napoli situation 12.12.12 at 9:12 am ET

Mike Napoli

The Red Sox could very well announce the signing of Mike Napoli at any moment. But at this moment, there has been no such announcement.

After flying through two scheduled press conferences, coupled with whispers of injury issues heading into the offseason, there are now rumblings regarding a glitch when it came to Napoli passing his Monday physical. The Red Sox aren’t talking, and neither is Napoli’s agent, Brian Grieper.

This is what we do know:

- There were whispers that Napoli’s leg issues (quad, ankle) were more serious than initially thought. When doing due diligence on Napoli, the physical concerns were certainly something on the Red Sox’ radar. But even though questions can be asked and answered, the team understood that true determinations wouldn’t be made until its medical staff had the patient in front of them.

- The initial plan was for Napoli to partake in an introductory press conference last Friday, but sources told WEEI.com’s Alex Speier that the 31-year-old’s trip to Boston was postponed until this week due to the player being under the weather. With the physical slated for Monday morning, a presser was then locked in for late morning on Tuesday. That time has obviously come and gone.

- Some surmised that the delay might be due to roster maneuvering, with the 40-man standing at 39 with the team having to add Napoli, Shane Victorino (whose press conference is slated for Thursday after a Wednesday physical) and Koji Uehara. But as one general manager points out, introductory press conferences are almost never postponed due to roster designation — particularly given that the team has a vacancy on its 40-man.

- There certainly could be an issue with the medicals, and Napoli could still get his press conference. The delay might be due to the team working out contract language that protects itself against any physical concerns, such as was the case in the J.D. Drew and John Lackey contracts.

- More than one free agent is keeping an eye on this situation, with numerous contingency plans seemingly at the ready. An industry source told WEEI.com Tuesday night that the Red Sox continue to stay in touch with the representatives for Nick Swisher, and Adam LaRoche is still on the market as well. If the Napoli fell through and the Sox went down the path of Swisher or LaRoche, it might open the door to a return for Cody Ross, whose right-handed bat wouldn’t offer the kind of duplication it might if Napoli was in the batting order. Ross is drawing significant interest from other teams, but he has also shown a strong affection for Boston.

Stay tuned …

If the sox decided to back out of the deal, I’d be fine with it.  Too much money for such average to below average production.

    • Anguillaman

Napoli is the best out of the trio of Napoli, Victorino and Gomes.  I don’t get the Gomes signing….maybe the dumbest signing of the winter…with Victorino right behind it.  Things are not looking good right now..but its just December.

      • Bruinman86

They all are unappealing to me.  Never liked Gomes.  Thought her was a cheap-shotting jerk  – thanks to a few brawls over the years. All are over the hill and past their prime but yet are getting paid big bucks. I would rather pay cheaper bucks for guys with similar numbers on 1 – 2 year deals.

  • Devil’s Advocate

A healthy Mike Napoli would be a good addition. But given that the Sox are unlikely to contend in 2013 & possibly 2014 anyway I have no problems whatsoever letting Mike Napoli walk if he failed his physical. The last thing we need is another Mike Cameron taking up roster space and eating $13 million per year.

I’d rather back out of the Victorino deal then the Napoli. Give the Victorino money to Josh Hamilton and tack on two more years and a few million more. I am definitely not convinced Hamilton can stay healthy, but I’d rather pay the extra money knowing he will play as much as Victorino and give three times the production.

  • Furcheezi

Why couldn’t this happen with Victorino instead?  The guy is a washed up and overpaid bum who is beyond his prime and never hits in clutch situations.  His numbers are clearly on the decline and yet the Sox are willing to give him Ortiz money.  I don’t care if he’s fast or a good defensive player.  Speed and defense alone aren’t deserving of that kind of money.  I live in Philly and all of my buddies who are Phillies fans are laughing at the Sox because they all know what kind of player he is.  Mediocre at best.

  • Ipse Amicus

Back out!  And then sneak Youk away from New York on a 2 year deal that is less per year than what they are paying Napoli.  Bats are about the same even now and Youk is a gold glove at first.  Plus, rest him and give Gomez, who is mashing everywhere he goes, a shot.

Correction Youk was a gold glove at first. The Youk you love from the past is not the Youk of the present day. Nostalgia is no way to run a baseball team son.

    • old milton

uhhhh ipse Youk is signed by the Yankees and is as injury riddled as napoli or Victorino

  • Ipse Amicus

Back out of Victorino too.  Terrible deal.  I would rather go with Brentz or Linares.  I think we are all ready to give youth a chance.  Or as one commentator said, pay Hamilton, a perennial MVP candidate.

  • Totally Blind fandom

It’s funny to see everyone want to be able to back out of this deal(and Victorinos’!)l now. After everyone on these comments pages shot down and called those who questioned the free agent signings “negative” and “lesser fans” and so on.This does not bode well though. Everyone may get their wish, this could a year full of youth and development, and losing, lots of losing which may make last year seem like a walk in the park. I liked the Napoli signing but it was fairly obvious the guy had a hard time staying on the field, let’s hope its a minor problem or the Mauro Gomez/James Sands era begins in earnest.

  • G._Mudge

There were ‘whispers’ about Jenks health before he signed.
Don’t walk Ben, RUN away from this deal.

  • soxsince78

The sox just continue to make bad decisions about players. Do a real rebuilding year and stop worrying about the pink hats, the sell outs, and the TV ratings. Let the kids play, we’ll still watch.

From all I read up on Jerry Sands, this kid needs a shot. Right handed bat. Great power and good speed. ( even though he played AAA for the PCL)  He needs playing time, 2013 a very good year to get his feet wet.

  • Pantera_rf

    Buyer’s remorse….dumb move reconsidered.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BIVLBBG3TCMUJ67DMIXU6N62MI Dick

Red Sox obtaining road kill, guess this one was DOA.

  • http://twitter.com/BallgameExpress Ballgame Express

Obviously LaRoche is the best player here but Swish brings a ton to the table and offers up the revenge factor re Youk signing with the Yanks If Ross could play first I would grab him He is a proven clutch run producer built for Fenway Do not screw up with Napoli Nice player for sure but only if he is perfectly healthy If he cannot be 100% his power will be severly curtailed and then what another whiffer we don’t need.

  • Mike

If there are questions on Napoli then it’s time to move to Swisher or LaRoche..

  • Scooter

I don’t want Cody Ross back we don’t need another defensive liability, he was AWFUL in the field last year. One dimensional, no wonder he’s still out there.

  • Ttbrown

I would be more then fine with letting Napoli go. We are giving too much money to someone that is not going to be worth it. Not to mention if he failed the physical in any way then why would the even still think about him?
