Why Red Sox are interested in Joel Hanrahan, but not Rafael Soriano 12.22.12 at 8:56 am ET
By Rob Bradford

The Red Sox have some interest in Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan. (AP)

Opportunity might be knocking for the Red Sox.

If the Red Sox’ interest in Pittsburgh closer Joel Hanrahan was born out of desperation to upgrade their closers role, you would have been hearing Rafael Soriano’s name connected with the team by now. But according to a baseball source, the Sox haven’t discussed making a play at the free agent reliever.

Sure, there is the issue of surrendering a draft pick if Soriano is signed (since the Yankees offered the righty a qualifying offer) — a notion that seems to be scaring teams away. But with the success of the 33-year-old in the American League East, if there was over-the-top anxiety about finding somebody to finish off games for the Sox, a conversation might at least be started regarding to short-term deal for Soriano.

So why are the Red Sox interested in Hanrahan?

The Pirates are fielding offers for the 31-year-old, although a source tells WEEI.com Alex Speier that asking for the likes of Felix Doubront would be a conversation-killer. Hanrahan made $4.1 million in 2012, and will be eligible to become a free agent after the 2013 season, opening the door for Pittsburgh’s willingness to talk.

It is the second straight offseason Pirates general manager Neil Huntington has at least entertained the idea of dealing his closer.

“Obviously, we’d love Joel to be in a Pirate uniform as long as it can possibly happen. There’s a number of factors that go into that. We’ve got to weigh each one accordingly,” Huntington told WEEI.com last November. “We recognize where our window is. We also recognize that we’re not going to be able to keep everybody in Pittsburgh, in a Pirate uniform, for the duration of their career.

“If there’s a deal out there that makes sense, we need to be open to it. That said, we’re not going to look to move him, but if somebody comes in and can fill multiple pieces for us or can fill a hole longer term for us, regardless of who it is — take the name off the back of the jersey — we always have to be willing to think about how we fill multiple pieces to be a better team for longer.”

The Red Sox simply view this as an opportunity to take advantage of the market while dealing from a position of semi-strength, and not flat-out desperation. They still have a closer in Andrew Bailey, and another reliever who has previously closed in Koji Uehara who could serve as a serviceable backup plan. And there would seem to be depth beyond Uehara, with Junichi Tazawa, Alfredo Aceves, Mark Melancon, Franklin Morales and Daniel Bard (assuming he bounces back).

But one could make a case that Hanrahan’s a next-level kind of guy. Soriano without the price tag.

Hanrahan hasn’t changed all that much since he introduced himself to the Red Sox in 2011, when 27 of his 34 pitches thrown over two appearances were clocked at 97 mph or better. According to MLBAnalytics.org, he hit at least 96 mph on nearly half of his pitches in ’12, a rate that didn’t drop off in the second half (hitting 98 mph 19 times in September).

His numbers would have been relatively the same as previous seasons, as well, if not for two bumpy September outings. Hanrahan still ended up holding hitters to a batting average of .187 while finishing with a 2.72 ERA, striking out 67 in 59 2/3 innings.

Any concern revolved around the closer’s increased walk total, which jumped up to 36, 20 more than the year before. Some in baseball worry about possible arm issues, while others will temper any concern by pointing out that the majority of Hanrahan’s wildness came in the season’s final month, when appearances were spotty due to the Pirates’ late-season struggles.

If Bailey is healthy, the Red Sox could certainly live without Hanrahan. But lessons should be learned regarding the importance of making certain the end of your bullpen is top-notch. An argument could be made that if the Brewers (29 blown saves), Angels (22), White Sox (20) and Dodgers (19) had better game-enders they would have been playing in the playoffs.

And it is no coincidence that since 2005, only one World Series winner (’06 Cardinals) hasn’t found a way to total at least 45 saves. The Giants’ last two title teams have collected 53 and 57 saves, respectively. The Red Sox? They went 35 of 57 in save opportunities last season. Again, it’s why if not for the cost of the draft pick, going after Soriano would make arguably as much sense as any of the Sox’ other $13 million acquisitions.

What should Red Sox do?

    Brian Wilson instead, please.

  • anguillaman3

I bet that the Pirates would not make the deal for both Melancon and Bailey.  It’ll be hard for the Sox to come out ahead on this sort of deal if it involves trading a Sox pitcher as most of them simply are not real good. Giving up a young lefty starter (Doubront) in this deal would be dumb as would dealing Morales.

  • AndyP

Trading Iglesias, who may be the best defensive shortstop in a generation, for a closer who will be a free agent next year would be foolish.

  • Earl Keese

Today’s word is “Stability”, that’s when you had three
different managers and pitching coaches in three years. When you could have
replaced an outfielder with homegrown talent but decided to spend $ 142,
0000,000 on a guy who played a handful of games. Then shipped the homegrown
talent to a team for a closer which in turn you are ready to trade proven
    reliever/starter for another closer. Stability.

  • CeeJay

Iglesias is a bum, he’s more of an automatic out at the plate than most pitchers

  • Tommy

Sox have a pretty good bullpen,I would make it stronger Iglesias has no future here bogearts will have that position of ss by 2014 time to move on an have maybe the best bull pen in the league.then move on from nappolli an get Mike Morse .

  • Yourmom

Didn’t the sox learn from there stupid trade for a closer last year???? Espiecally if there is good options on the market!! This team is so done though, Ben c is the worst gm ever. I hope he jumps of a bridge

Something bold needs to be done to contend in 2013.It would’nt be wise to assume that we don’t have a prayer.Aceves lost 10 games as a closer and Bailey had a fifficult time coming off an injury. With all the fallout from fans, and i’m sure that the FO follows fan reaction then they may have to be a move for a known quality closer.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

Trading Reddick to Oakland was a bad move in hindsight it happens sometimes,no one projected his numbers in Oakland.Bailey came over with a good closer record even with his innability to pitch in a full season and may still be a health problem in which i am sure the FO is looking at.But a mistake should stand in their way.

  • anguillaman3

I am solidly with you , Bench Cherington is the Forest Gump of
MLB GM”S….he’s not just bad he’s horrible.

  • anguillaman3

Actually, Reddick projected out to be a very good hitter with some
power if he managed to stay healthy , which he did last season in Oakland.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WW4SUGV5J6Y7R5MVPAWVIWAJFU Dennis

What i meant to say is that it should’nt stand in their way of making a move.

  • Bsony

Shipping out talent for this guy doesn’t make any sense.  It is still unclear that the Red Sox will contend next year.  We have a deep bullpen as is.  Lets see where we are mid year, and if we really need to add a late inning arm we can do it then.

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

If it’s Iglesias, then fine. do it. But anything above that would be a huge whiff. Last year the red sox NEEDED a closer. This year we have 5-7 guys who have closed before or could close. If they are taking advantage of the closer market then this deal makes sense. But they MUST not overpay for him.

  • Paul

Aceves is the move here hopefully

  • Popsy

a good pen will give the Sox plenty of opportunities to, in the least be competitive and hopefully win more close games. Strong pen=less innings for starters=stronger starters.
If we dont compete there will be plenty of phone calls at trade deadline and we can scoop up more talent.
But I agree Iggy and a throw in is all we should give up

  • Kobra543

i hope we trade for hanrahan, maybe like a melocon, iglesias and aceves….always good to have 2 closers on the team, you might never know what might happen, he would be a nice addition to the bullpen

  • Ortiz34renteria16

Salty, or Larvarnway along with Iglesis, an Melancon is the deal I bet or along those lines.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t deal Bailey and melancon for one year of a question mark in Hanrahan…Hanrahan had big command issues for awhile last year…

  • Anonymous

From the eye test,,its questionable whether he could ever hit .235,let alone hit .250…..The Sox must figure that Xander Boegarts footwork has improved to the point that he can handle SS at the major league level, thus leaving Iglesias expendable..

  • Anonymous

His draft was horrible last year as well…..Major red flags, especially using a first round pick on Marrero,a guy with no power, who couldn’t even hit .300 in division 1  college baseball…How is that a first round pick? Red flags folks, red flags…

  • Anonymous

I’m curious to see how Reddick progresses, because he has a huge hole in his swing…Consistency issues as well…We’ll have to keep our eye on him..I have to admit,,,after watching him fumble around dropping easy balls for the Red Sox,I find it odd that he won a gold glove…..I still don’t understand what qualifies someone to win a gold glove besides fielding percentage……Rafael Palmiero won a gold glove at first base in a year that he only played 15 games at first base.

  • Anonymous

I’d ship out Iglesias,Aceves, and a Brandon Jacobs type for him,no question…..Stack the bullpen deep,,and hold onto Bailey as well!!! He’ll be healthy …

  • Anonymous

Melancon was absolutely lights out for almost the entire last two months of the season…He was absolutely filthy, and should not be moved whatsoever, considering we have control of him for the next 4 years!!

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

Iglesias can’t hit at all. It would be a steal for the sox

  • Bob M.

Probably will be something along the lines of Iglesias and Aceves for Hanrahan. The Red Sox
whether or not by design are looking increasingly like the “white” Sox with each transaction.

  • Wavid Dilson

Brian Wilson is too risky. If they had a lock at closer I would say yes. I like this move because the team is open to trading Bailey, and now they can afford to move him. Also, if Bard is Bard, they have one of the best pens, if not the best, in baseball. This works for the team conaidering their rotation. Since the rotation is weak, they can now get 6 innings out of a starter and then turn it over to: Breslow, Bard, Koji, Tazawa, Hanrahan, Baily, Melancon. It makes up for the rotation. Very good moves, something the Rangers did a few years ago.

You guys on this board are nuts.  Jose Iglasias has the best glove of any shosrtstop I have ever seen.  Oh, I know, there have been a lot of shortstops around with good gloves, but none better than Iglesias.  Yes, he did have a problem getting it going in his short trial in September.  I admit that.  But, look at his numbers at AAA this year.  361 atbats, .269 batting average, and one stat I like, only 47 strikeouts for a strikeout ratio of 13.02%.  Compare that to several of the Sox players last year, and I don’t think he looks like someone who cannot hit major league pitching.  There was rumor that he was planning on working on developing strength this offseason.  That will make a big difference this year.  In fact, a very big difference.  So, all you guys out there saying he has a hole in his swing and he just plain can’t hit, I am sure glad you guys are not running things in the front office or on the field.  You would be getting rid of anyone that goes into any kind of a slump or slow period of productivity.   I believe another year at AAA and he may end up being a shortstop for many years for the someone that is willing to be patient and let it work out.  Just my opinion.

I also think we could be sorry we let Sands go for a oneyear closer rental.

  • Jdd

brian wilson sucks dude!  and injured. what r u smoking?

  • Marco Rincones

You are kidding me, no? Brian Wilson is almost like a has-been rodeo clown, Hanrahan still has somer juice to his game and, in fact, could grow to be an even better closer if his fastball wasn’t so straight but his slider is outstanding much of the time.

  • Marco Rincones

Now that the Pirates signed Russell Martin they have much less use for a 2nd catcher unless they choose to move McHenry, which I doubt seriously. Hurdle and Pittsburghers really like “The Fort” – He’s just got the mentality that Pirate followers like I guess and he’s still inexpensive too, always an impoetant factor to Bucco management.

  • Qtrback

AndyP, let me let you in on a secret, Iglesias can’t hit minor or major league hitting…..

  • Capecodrt

Why would you want bryan Wilson, when he didn’t through a pitch last season?.

  • Capecodrt

Hanrahan is a great pick up, but why not Soriano. Since letting Papelbon walk thay have needed a lockdown closer, but Soriano’s name never comes up. They don’t want to pay the money. Hanrahan slipped alot last season, and now he is in the leagues toughest division. Soriano should already be signed. But, thats the the Red Sox for you.

  • http://nellewrites.net nelle

It sounds like the Sox did this for several reasons, one as to clear out spots on the roster, and not so much because they saw a burning need. As such, it makes great sense they wouldn’t surrender a draft pick.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Palozej/100003149722784 David Palozej

2nd player from Pitts has to be Garrett Jones!!  He is the perfect fit with Napoli a big ??.  Last year Jones played 66 games in RF and 72 games at 1B!!  He is a Left Handed bat!!…and batted .888 OPS vs Right Handed Pitching.  Everything makes sense now…otherwise it is a terrible deal for the Sox as they get 1 year of Hanrahan and give up 16 years of Melancon, Sands and Pimentel…LOOK AT PITTS depth chart…they traded for Sanchez (All Star) to play 1B and their outfield is set with Marte, McCutchen and Snider with Tabata, Harrison and Presley as subs… they have no place for Jones as Sands will be their new backup 1B…

  • Izzie Nutz

Is there going to be anyone to like on this team besides Pedey and Ells. It’s looking like a bad auto-draft fantasy team.

  • hippobear

Red Sox please do not trade for Hanrahan and give up prospect.  This closer is not really good. He walked a lot of people and loaded the base.  We dont not  need people like him to close for Red Sox.   He is not much better than any one else that are in the Bullpen.   Even to give up Iglesias for him.   I would save Iglesias for a better player than him.  Not a good choice.  Just imagine that you give up Reddick for Bailey and now you want to trade Bailey becuase you trade for Hanrahan and lose some more kids.     Hanrahan will be free agent end of 2013 season.  This is renting a player for the whole year.  He walked 36 players.   A closer does not walked 36 players.  He should be striking out 36 Players.   You have guys in the bullpen who can become a closer better thann him.

Parcells was focused on a new job while his Pats were in the playoffs, as I remember. I’d replace him with Gray or Antwine, who was a beast back in the day. Ray Hamilton was a solid player, but not close to Gray in ability. You need to listen to those old-timers you talked to a little more attentively.
