Vote: Do PED users belong in the Hall of Fame? 01.09.13 at 3:48 pm ET
By WEEI

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America did not elect a single eligible player to Cooperstown in voting results revealed Wednesday, the eighth time in history and first since 1996 that no player has been elected. While Craig Biggio and Jack Morris came relatively close to election, suspected steroid users such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens fell well short of the 75 percent threshold for admission to the Hall of Fame.

Did anyone deserve to get elected to the Hall of Fame this year?

I would like the 2nd question to be less loaded. I think Clemens and Bonds should eventually get in since they would have without PEDs, but SOSA and MacG should not because they would never have. Look at beginning vs end of their career.

  • Asterisk

Roger Clemens MLB career would have ended in 1997 or 1998 if he didn’t use PEDs. Just look at his downward spiral in his final years with the Red Sox and how he magically found the fountain of youth as soon as he left. Oh wait, he conveniently “misremembers” that part.

Selfishness never wins. They put themselves above the rest of the true players, and lied to cover up on their STEROID use. They are criminals to the game. Money and Fame was there goals, maybe they should come clean like Lance Armstrong. But there Pride holds them back. Stupid sports writers back these criminals, but why?

  • 2011sadness

Rose, Bonds, and Clemens should be elected but not in their lifetime. While alive they should not benefit from the associated elevation of the status associated with such an election.Let Shoeless Joe be elected instead as a posthumous example

  • henry louis 5th

quite frankly? i say , let them all in . everyone was doing it so the field was leveled . it was more or less an equal playing ground . some excelled with ped’s some did not . more or less like the sport without them . please bear in mind that drugs in baseball goes waaaaay back to greenies in the 60′s and everyone who deserved to get in did so .

  • Mortis8485

I think that history has shown that era’s in baseball have been affected by some sort of PED or exclusionary practices. This is no different. Move on. Let players play, greenies, steriods same thing.

  • Totally Blind fandom

Hi there all the people who hate”cheating”, just a thought:The spitball and /or ball doctoring has always been illegal in baseball, yet in 1981 admitted spitballer Gaylord Perry was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame,  Be careful, the moral high horse in baseball is the slipperiest slope.

  • Kman1020

Clearly there are some guys who could have voted for Biggio and Morris and they could have led the class of 2013′s induction. I love those that waste votes that skew the percentage numbers. Completely ridiculous which is why I don’t think it should be left completely up to the writers.

  • innovator1

clemens was great down the stretch in 1996…He won the cy young in 1997,and that was before he met Brian mcnamee….His velocity was awesome in 1996 coming off his surgery from 1995…Dan Duquette offered Clemens a three year deal after 96,but clemens got a four year from Toronto…Be a little more objective, huh?  Another thing,,he went really, really deep into games in 1996,which trends towards longevity….

  • innovator1

Give me  direct and truthful answers: Do steroids help your movement on your pitches? Do steroids help your mechanics? do steroids help your drop on your splitfinger? Do steroids help with your consistency in your release point? Do steroids help you with your consistency? oh,,do steroids affect the integrity of the makeup in ligament health? Absolutely not!!!! Steroids hurt ligaments and tendons,1000% !!!  Clemens natural body was made for pitching and longevity…

  • innovator1

All of you who say that the upper tier guys like Clemens and Bonds shouldn’t go in the hall,or go in later, are you going to say that Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays, who were both notorious amphetamine(greenie) users when they were playing, shouldn’t be in the hall of fame either??  Hank and Willie Cheated, but noone wants to talk about it….Be more objective…either you were a hitter,or you weren’t …

  • innovator1

    Totally agree,Mortis!!!

  • innovator1

Only 20% of the vote should be coming from writers, and it should only be from the most respected, most OBJECTIVE writers, like Peter Gammons!!! the other 80% should be made up of committes of the MOST OBJECTIVE former and current general managers, managers, players, and pro scouts….

  • Pedro

I don’t think they will be able to elected anybody based on this vote. How do you know who was the cheater and not now? Is Pulois a hall of famer? looks like he does steroids. You have to vote these guys in and just call it the steroid era, or close down the hall of fame because nobody is sure who is clean or dirty. Bagwell was never tested for steroids, but people assume he is juiced because of his body type. He is worthy of the hall based on his career

  • Anonymous

Back at ya :)   The best thing for you to do is a little study on Steriods. Everyone knows what you don’t understand.  Look at A-Rod for the yanks, since he stopped steriodshe can’t do anything like he used to.

  • innovator1

Well,I have to be honest with you,,i dont like Arod…however, since he’s been getting tested non stop since testing started in 2004,,,he hit 36,54,35,54,and 35 in his first five years since testings inception…..He’s a first ballot hall of famer if there ever was one..Makes me nauseated to even say it….You don’t have to be strong or take steroids to hit 30 plus home runs at the major league level…
Technically, its been said that he tested for something positive in 2003 that was on the banned substance list….half the stuff you buy at gnc will make you test positive…heck, metrx, among other things were supplied in clubhouses all over the league…If Arod was getting huge, which he wasn’t ,by taking the stuff you see roid head body builders take, that would be one thing….his swing ,his mechanicsand his natural God given talent are why he hit….Either youre a hitter,or you aren’t….

  • Brett

speed did not enhance any ones game, it was so you could play after a night of drinking.

  • Beachbob16

The only place these three deserve is the “Hall of Shame”

  • Frederick_roche

I believe Dale Murphy deserved to get in.

Keeping PED users out provides a strong incentive to reduce its use.

  • Preston

I have loved baseball since my dad took me to my first game at Fenway in 1956.  To me the ONE thing that separated baseball from the rest of sports is it’s numbers.  Even though each era is different, you could always compare numbers.  What these guys from the steroid era did was DESTROY the numbers which they would not have done without the PEDs.  In my senior years—I’m 69 now—I should really be sitting back, relaxing with baseball.  Sorry, this generation of cheaters stole the love of the game that I had.  I just don’t have the passion for baseball that I used to have.

  • Anonymous

I must admit to being torn on this issue. Juicers were pitching to juicers and vice verse. The sport has been tarnished for an entire generation and some compromise will eventually be reached to include the likes of Bonds and Clemens. The real victims of this are the guys like Biggio who will be excluded. His career and story belong in the Hall to inspire visitors for generations to come.

  • old geezer

I’m fine with keeping the steroid users out, but Biggio and Morris should both get it.  Particularly Morris who is running out of time.  Also, isn’t it about time the Old Timers committee gave Dewey Evans his due respect?

  • old geezer

Good point about Bagwell.  I worry he might not get there because of the era, but he still has a shot.   Murphy also should have made it but it willl lhave to be with the Old Timers Committee.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the info.  But everything will catch up to the ones doing steriods. it’s costing the Yanks close to 30mil a year now for A-rod, and he is no where near the shape he used to be in. Clements and Bond and along with Soza blew themselves up with Steriods, not to mention Jose Conseco. When you look at Bonds playing for the Pirates(he was skinny)now you see him, big difference. Same said with Mark McGuire when he played in Oakland. We don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure these guys out, right.  I think the main problem is the Commissioner Bud Selig, he let this be aloud. People filling the ball parks just to see these power hitters blast the ball over the fences. Final point: not good for the youth and players trying to get into the big leagues. And now you see, people will not vote for any steriod users, and that I applaud them for. Now Bud Selig must go.     Have a good day !

  • Legend2683

Man you have no clue about rounds there several out there! Deca is one that makes your mass bigger and helps your joints but all of them bad on Liver!

  • Tomlrct

Completely agree. Out for lifetime–Jackson in with “posthumous” designation–and a workable precedent set for Rose and the juicers. Only manageable and honorable solution.

  • Smith_mide78se

I cannot vote on this specific question regarding these players.  Should they be in Cooperstown based on their careers…?  Maybe!  If they did in fact lie to congressmen and MLB…. Noooooooo!

  • Troll Hunter

Oh well, I would have liked him landing with the Patriots but at least he will be an unrestricted free agent next year with Pittsburgh getting zip for him.

  • patssuckerswontwinthetrophy

of course they did. pats didn’t want to make it impossible for them to match, they just wanted to get another value player and look good to the pit hat pats fans, lmao

  • beware of the Idiot above

Shut up douch e. Love the fact you feel the need to “like” your own post.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dory.brown.9 Dory Brown

Maybe, or he could get signed to a long term deal

  • bench warmer

    Sigh…

  • Troll Hunter

True but the Steelers’ cap is a mess and they will have to make some cuts to get under to sign their own draft picks. Matching makes them better but not sure for how long.

  • fab4ever

Douche…and the Steelers just shot themselves in the foot….don’t think for a minute that this wasn’t a chess move by the Pats…but you’re too stupid to realize that….now that small cap space for Pittsburgh got even smaller…God, are you EVER dumb!!!

  • Titletown1

The Pats forced the Steelers into a lose/lose situation. Don’t match the Pats’ offer and lose the player. Match the Pats’ offer and lose the cap space.

We still have zero receivers to draw the safety and nickel coverage downfield…..

  • Anvil Smasher Super Fireball

Got some advice for all you homers…. Don’t go picking Brady in your fantasy draft this summer. This offense with all those oft-injured WRs and TEs is going to be a messy joke. Those bums could hardly stay healthy last year. Pull those cupcake injuries again this year and Brady and co. will have a very, very BAD year. No joke. This is for real.

And instead of drafting a potential WR star with our first pick, the genius BB will turn it into 4, 7th rounders–course that’s where all the value is. You know, the kind of WRs that BB loves to draft: 5’3″ WRs who can play offense, play defensive back, special teams, return punts, carry the water bottles, clean the locker room…….. Yeah, we’ve all seen this before from BB. As arrogant and a frustrating as ever.

  • Jeremy Token

Word up. Totally agree. It is frustrating to watch. And Brady’s not getting any younger either.

Sshhhh, can you hear that? Thatt’s the sound of the Pats window of Super Bowl opportunity closing. Closing fast.

  • Laurent Tyrone

Offense will be a joke this year fool.

  • Esmeralda Johnnystones

Pats have Hobbits for WRs!!!! Don’t you know, Hobbits are very versatile and hearty creatures. Loyal too! They’ll go downfield and catch the ball. Trouble is, Hobbits just aren’t that durable. Most get hurt immediately and miss the remainder of the season. Just wait until week 2 and both Eddleman and Amendola go down with season-ending injuries. Perhaps Brady can thrown the ball and catch it downfield himself? Somebody has to. But it won’t be Bill’s love for 4’8″ WRs. You can bet on that one you old coot.

  • spooney love from above

And I have the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Bill loves to draft Hobbit wideouts in rounds 6 and 7. Expect more of be same this year. I hear they make rear zero-impact additons to the practice squad! Oh yea!!! I love it when Bill drafts those useless Hobbit wideouts! At least they can help with special teams, punt returns, water bottle carrying, locker room cleaning, jock sniffing.

The one that’s really smilin is Sanders. We will see how many times Big Ben goes his way this coming year. Call it what you must, Steelers have Sanders.

  • Dano S

I think the Pats will turn the 3rd round pick they were going to send to Pittsburgh for Sanders into a 4th and 5th round pick. Patriot Predictions 86.0 1 Trade for 2nd and 3rd round pick.
2 Alex Okafor DE Texas. 3 Blidi Wreh-Wilson CB Connecticut 3 Trade for a 4th and 5th round pick. 4 Joseph Fauria TE UCLA 5 Anthony McCloud DT Florida St.
7 Connor Vernon WR Duke 7 Jeff Baca G UCLA.

  • Dano S

Patriot Predictions 86.0 Other 2nd round Pick Terrance Williams WR Baylor.

  • leggs

Ask yourself this…Did the patriots want the player or did they want the contract. Seems to me they wanted the contract. They could of front loaded a 2yr contract and made it just about impossible for the steelers to match. It was all about the contract and not the player. They will now deal that pick for a 4th and a 6h.

  • Chucky Perks

Yeah, too bad for Pit…? Dude really? We needed Sanders on the Pats. Now we we have to draft unproven 6th or 7th round wideouts who will NEVER see the light of day. Just look at the team’s ability to draft the worst wideouts in the game. It’s a real winning situation for the Pats (sarcasm).

  • Salad Fingers

Yeaaah….about the Pats ability to draft wideouts. Are you misremembering that that hasn’t really been the team’s strength these past 13 years? So enthusiastic about BB trading down his picks into magical 6th and 7th rounders! Geez we’re f*****d.

  • mike

Do the patriots really think there defense can stop anyone ????Why they dont go after any defensive players makes me wonder.

  • ChrisinDanvers

Quite a reaction to a loss of a player that the Patriots signed, but never had. Sure, Sanders would have been a nice piece, however he had less catches in three years than Welker had this past year and has only five touchdowns in that time, so it’s certainly far from time to gnash teeth and wring hands. I can understand why it would be nice to have him, but this is hardly a huge loss.

Part of the Patriots plan here was to do the one year contract with the fact that – it looked doubtful that the Steelers wanted to sign Sanders to a long-term deal this year – making him available next year totally to them. More thank likely, they can get their player next year….if he is indeed worth it.

While the Patriots still have a gaping hole in the WR dept., from the word on many sites, there was no certainty that Sanders would be the outside threat they would need. He could have been; but he also was used often in the slot.

The Patriots will continue to search and scour for a player. Remember that Welker and Moss were obtained in a trade, so there is no saying that the Patriots won’t find another receiver similar to Sanders that they could trade for.

As for thoughts that this offense will tank, just see 2006. That team could’ve easily gone to the SuperBowl. And the receiver and tight end corp is a hundred times better than that group….even if they all might not be on the field that the same time. As for the defense, the Patriots have addressed gaps for depth, resigned players that fit, and are counting on young player growth for this year. That should help a defense with, showed improvement during the second half of the year. Just not seeing any glaring issue in either department.

  • fab4ever

Exactly my point…he’s just going to have to do a better job..

  • Titletown1

The Patriots didn’t need Sanders in particular. He was just the best option out there. I agree BB has drafted some horrible WRs in the past. They still need an outside threat. By the way, the Pats have a first, second, and third round pick so I don’t know why you’re complaining about a sixth or seventh rounder….

  • mcope77

exactly didnt u think it was funny the pats only offered him a 1yr deal, i did…it was so they could get him as cheap as possible without Pitt matching…why would Pitt sign a guy whose a UFA next yr for a 3 rd pick…well they did lol n it screwed them..the Pats r upset but content cuz they still have their pick. Pits just really screwed themselves lol

  • innovator

    We need 2 outside threats….Injuries,and matchups…

  • innovator

I still don’t trust BB from rounds 2-4…It really isn’t rocket science either….Mallett will walk in two years…Why haven’t we gotten picks for him yet???

  • innovator

Greg Bedard is always spot on…Luckily Donald Jones nor Michael Jenkins have large cap hits..We still have money, and there’s still some decent low cost options at receiver in free agency who can make plays downfield….

  • innovator

There are 8 receivers in the draft who would be better fits than Terrance Williams imho…

  • Ron Jeremy’s Pecker

and you still have zero testicles.

  • innovator

Dano, you understand that at Corner we already have Talib,Dennard,Dowling,Arrington,Cole,an d Mccourty who could slide over at corner as well, don’t you, sir?? ;) We need 2-3 REAL receivers,a defensive tackle, and most of all,a pass rushing OLB/DE that can complement Chandler Jones…Any other picks would be gravy…

  • Chuckles Curran II

Typical. I used to act like that when I was your age.

  • Duke Nukem Forever

Yeah…a first, second, and third rounder….who they will promptly turn into 6th and 7th rounds picks for this year and next year.

Happens all the time when they’re thin at picks. Some real valaue in the those 6th and 7th rounders! Keep drinking the Coolid bud.

  • Titlest Towny

    This.

Is a good point. BB has lost his mind.

  • Dano S

I do agree with a Pass Rushing Defensive End which I would have Addressed

that issue in Free Agency. Draft fast approaching enjoy and for me its one of the best days of the year.

Your predictions schtick is soooooooo tired. Just stop, nobody cares what you think.
