Sources: Red Sox have shown interest in Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay, although ‘nothing active’ 01.12.13 at 4:13 pm ET

Casey Kotchman

According to multiple baseball sources, the Red Sox have shown interest in free agent first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay. One source reported, however, that “nothing is active” in regard to the team’s pursuit of the players.

The Red Sox pursuit of both Kotchman and Overbay might not be solely contingent on the outcome of Mike Napoli’s status, with the Sox still seeking depth at the first base position. The club and Napoli are still working through language in Napoli’s contract that would protect the team against any issues regarding the free agent’s hip ailment. (ESPN’s Jim Bowden reported Friday that the Red Sox might be looking to shorten Napoli’s initial three-year, $39 million deal to one year.)

“Until something is done, you have to consider other options so we’ve had to do that and we’ve continued to consider other ways to improve the team, whether it’s at first base, or elsewhere,” said Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said while appearing on ‘The Hot Stove Show’ Thursday. “At this point, we just haven’t found anything that made sense to us in the sort of big picture. So that’s where we are. There’s no one particular player that’s available or not available that would have changed the course of our offseason. We’re just examining and evaluating things as they come. Certainly when you have a position you’re trying to improve on, until it’s improved upon, you have to continue to consider other options. It’s fair to say as you sort of get deeper into the winter, the free agents start to go off the board. You can look at trades and other ways to do things. It remains a focus. We’re still hoping we can do something to improve ourselves in that area before we get to Fort Myers.”

The 29-year-old Kotchman, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal with Cleveland prior to the 2012 season, struggled offensively while serving as the Indians’ everyday first baseman. The lefty hitter finished ’12 hitting .229 with 12 home runs and a .612 OPS. The previous season, Kotchman hit .306 with an .800 OPS and 10 homers after inking a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay.

Overbay, 35, played in just 65 major-league games in ’12, starting the season with Arizona, and finishing with Atlanta. In 131 big league plate appearances, the left-handed batter hit .259 with a .727 OPS. He last played regularly for the Pirates in 2011, hitting .227 with a .649 OPS in 103 games before being released after playing in 103 games.

Wowie! Wow! More over the hill 35 year olds for Ben to lust after!
Hey Ben, ever heard of making TRADES?
Yeah, I forgot. You don’t want to give up either precious prospects or draft choices.
Doesn’t leave much room for anything else.
What a zero of an off season.
    Thanks for nothing!

  • Simply Pathetic

Wow,Now I really want to spend my $$$ to go to a game!!!!!!!!! NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AL34

Its going to be a real long year with this team. A GM who is a lap dog and Larry “The Hatchetman” Luchinno who is making the decisions on this team via John Henry. Kotchmann cannot hit at all and Overbay is over the hill. Kotchmann js a backup defensive replacement at best. I am tited of hearing about the high payroll. They only endured one year and 3/4 of high payroll, then dumped everyone off. This is nothing but cheap management, maximize profits, and get cheaper prospects who are at major league minimum. Who is this team kidding with them going to charge the prices for 2012 that they are with a mediocre product on the field.

  • Pedro

I think george scott is still avalible

  • Casey Krotch-man

Why don’t we just get a plate of dog crap to man first base.

  • Wmeritz

how come Dano did not predict this?

  • Pedro

This is what you can do when you have the dumbest fan base in baseball. They sellout all last year to watch a joke of a team. Any other franchise in baseball the fans would not show up to watch a last place team. so where is the incentive to improve? Will they bring in more fans? Can you make more money if they spend less money? This is what is important to this team, who hasn’t won a playoff game in 6 years. Have fun watching another last place team, but they do hold the record of most plaques in the park. Sweet Caroline

  • Schwank

Wow this looks worswe than the JD drew deal several years back.    They clearly don’t want Naploi and would “take” him for one year … why not.   Napoli clealy has so,me type of issue tha tis more than just precautionary.

  • Dano S

Red Sox Predictions 103.0 Sox use John Farrell’s structure and disipline to sign two pichers that could use that
as they sign Dallas Braden SP Oakland and Carlos Zambrano SP Marlins. The Sox also sign Mike Napoli,
Lylen Overbay and Nyjer Morgan.Lets get Napoli  done him next to David Ortiz would be great in the lineup.

  • innovator1

Dont mess with these guys, grab Justin Smoak from Seattle..

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.tanasi Joseph Tanasi

Give Napoli a 3 year deal.  First year guaranteed, year two team option, and 3rd year player option.  We need a guy at first who can hit for average and power.  This protects both the team and player.

  • rogerroger

Hey now, Kotchman is only 29. He’s just not all that good.

  • rogerroger

Not to bring up old BS, but has it occurred to anyone that they really didn’t give Valentine the hatchet job they have others in the past? I wonder about that. Perhaps he has things he could fire back with, and would. Maybe he’s just not worth it.

Above this comment is a whole page full of negative nattering nimrods.

Is Big Papi taking grounders yet?

  • ben=dunce

The baseball version of the Toronto Maple leafs.

  • anguillaman3

I hear both of these guys are great clubhouse guys and neither can hit a lick..so a perfect fit for the Sox and BUMBLING BEN.

  • Darren Bragg Fan

My whole baseball life I was told power-hitting first basemen were a dime a dozen. What happened? Why CAN’T Papi be part of a platoon at first?  Is he made of glass?  And if he is, is that why they were willing to give Napoli so much money, as a back-up Plan B DH?

     Is Mo Vaughn still around?

  • Mal Tempo

Stick David Ortiz on first and make me earn his money.

  • Guest2432

Haha pink hats. They are just fillers. Not solutions. You guys want them to keep top prospects, but get top guys on the trade market lol. To come to a team that most have on their no trade list lol.

  • Anonymous

Kotchman would be a great late game defensive 1B for the right price.

    MORSE!

  • Richard in Canton

perfect mediocre choices for a mediocre team.  sign them both should secure our lock on last place in the AL East

  • acrossalloceans

mainly because most other teams have crap fans. its the fans that show up even when we havent been to the playoffs in years that really matter, not you band wagoners who jump ship the first sign of trouble.

  • acrossalloceans

“shown interest” has to be the most over used phrase this entire off season.

  • Waituntil2015

the Red Sox have jumped the shark. They won’t be a contender for World Series for at least another two or three years.

  • Wmeritz

Is the Sox interest in these two guys meant to intimidate Napoli and his agent to agree to the Sox’s terms? We shall see.

  • Wu1z

    Would like to see Kotchman.

  • NHSoxFan8

Like the idea of Nada at first and add complimentry players from there.  Seems like he has the ability to do it.  Bigger need for him there (1st) then in the OF… could still play OF as needed.  Doesn’t feel like we’re taking advantage of what he could do for the sox.

  • Smell the coffee

Everybody has the chubby for Napoli – guy is a ham at first base. Ortiz might even be a better fielding first baseman.

  • yazfan

SOX SHOULD HAVE SIGNED Adam LaRoche, and yes, parted with that almighty precious 2nd round pick. LaRoche is a quality, durable, steady 1B both in the field and at the plate. But no, “we have Napoli.” Now that Napoli is damaged goods (what a surprise, the guy’s never played a full season) they’re talking about giving away TWO major-league quality players for Michael Morse, who A) isn’t the player LaRoche is, and B) becomes a free agent in 9 months.  Either that, or sign a scrap-heap 1B like Kotchman, this for the team that charges the highest prices in baseball. Does this make sense to anybody?

  • redsawksfan

Twitter was discussing BOS interest in Justin Smoak from SEA. If Ben can get him on the cheap for excess RPs like Aceves, Miller, or Morales…. then I say DO IT. Smoak has fallen short to his expectations but he is still young. Switch hitter with some power and a better defender than Napoli, Kotchman, Overbay, Morse, etc. Twitter reports were coming from Nick Cafardo apparently, but I did not see anything from him directly on his account or other Red Sox beat writers. If he still does not pan out, there is no threat of long term contract, high $ wasted, or draft picks.

  • Bill

Dump Napoli. He is damaged goods like Crawful.

  • Boslad

Well, at least we don’t have Dice K to kick around anymore.

  • Dewey

Might as well bring ME back to play 1B!

  • Wmeritz

Lets face it folks, the Sox will pick road kill to play first base and will not part with any of their premium prospects unless they receive a premium player back. You can be sure that as time goes by the price for journeymen first basemen will go up. The Sox should sign Kotchman to a reasonable deal and cut all ties with the Napoli camp before its too late. Enough is enough with this Napoli guy already! The man failed his medical, case closed. Let the door hit him where God split him.
