By

According to a baseball source, the one-year, $5 million deal with the Red Sox and Mike Napoli includes the following incentives that could increase the value of the deal to $13 million:

Active roster bonuses

$500,000 each for 30, 60, 90, 120 days on the active roster

Plate appearance bonuses

$500,000 each for 300, 325, 350, 375 plate appearances

$1 million each for 400, 475, 550, 625 plate appearances

Catch-all bonus

If Napoli is active for a minimum of 165 days in 2013, he will get the full $8 million in incentives for a total of $13 million

Great deal…. But I think after this year, he will be getting big bucks. 40+ HR this year.

All contracts should be like this…period.  You play, we pay.  Makes ALL kinds of sense.

Also gives the team some wiggle room to avoid paying out by resting a player more than he needs to be rested.

Napolis agent is an idiot for not cutting off the PA to 550.  Not many players reach 625, even those at the top of the order unless you play almost every game.

If you stay healthy and you’re a starter, you should get to 625 PA’s (~4 PA’s per game over 150 games). What you’re thinking of is reaching 625 AB’s which is much more difficult.  Of course, if he plays 150 games, then he was likely active for 165 days, so the catch all bonus would apply, which is why the condition on the 625 PA bonus is fairly pointless.

Most players reach 625 PA, not official at bats

Cherington did well on this one

Another good one: one year for Uehara, Hanrahan, Drew and now Naps; two years for Gomes, Dempster, Ross; and three for the versatile Victorino, two + one for Pen anchor Breslow. All this while keeping the top 10-20 prospects, allowing potential difference makers Iggy, Kalish and Lava some more time at AAA, picking up Holt and others. Combine this with
The Trade, the enhanced medical, training, scouting and coaching staff (including Tek, Wake, maybe Pedro) and he has clearly shown his savvy. In Ben we trust!?!!

The bar is pretty low then.   5 million down the toilet for a player with a known hip problem (about the value of a 2nd round pick) if that’s what they end up paying.

If he is healthy and plays a lot he makes 12 million, which is a fair deal for both parties if he produces about the same as last year.

If he has a monster year the Red Sox will regret not signing him to a longer deal.  A QO may be up to 14 million then.

Not sure the Sox will regret anything..Chances are the guy will be short of 40 and sadly walking with a cane. Hope he stays healthy, let him earn his 13 million and watch him rake at Fenway.

You said yourself he has a hip problem and may only be good for a few more years. A one year deal is good for the sox and Napoli’s bat can do wonders in fenway so yes it is a good deal on paper. Once we start playing…who knows

How does this affect the luxury tax?  Is it on the books as $5M, or can some of the optional money count against the tax?  Does this give the Sox additional flexibility to add significant pieces midseason?

Should of resigned Mo Vaugh. Same type of player and both steroid users. What a player and a great role model for all.  Our GM is on top of his game for sure. My husband approves.
