Bullpen coach Gary Tuck leaves Red Sox 01.29.13 at 7:08 pm ET
By Rob Bradford

Gary Tuck

Multiple major sources have confirmed that Red Sox bullpen coach Gary Tuck has chosen not to return for the 2013 season. It is unclear why Tuck has chosen not to return after initially agreeing to join manager John Farrell‘s coaching staff earlier in the offseason.

Earlier this offseason, the Red Sox had retained the services of Tuck, who was in the option year of his contract. The 58-year-old had been with the Red Sox since 2006, serving as both the team’s bullpen coach and catching instructor, having been courted by John Farrell to become the Blue Jays bench coach prior to the ’11 season.

Tuck, who had left the Red Sox for a stretch during the 2012 regular season due to personal reasons and also required time to recover from double hernia surgery in spring training last year, would have been the lone member of the Red Sox’ 2012 major league coaching staff to return for ’13. At this time, there is no known replacement for the highly regarded instructor, though it is worth noting that Chad Epperson, the team’s minor league catching coordinator, filled in for Tuck as the bullpen coach during his leave in 2012.

Tuck was hugely protective of both his catchers and members of the Red Sox bullpen, forming a pirate-themed club among Sox relievers that carried over from season to season. Besides working with the backstops, he also was credited with the development of numerous Sox pitchers, with one example being former Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima. Early in the 2007 season, Tuck taught Okajima the changeup (or “Okee-doke”) that helped turn the lefty into an All-Star.

Tuck is believed to be the only coach in major league history to have won World Series rings with both the Red Sox and Yankees. He has developed a reputation as one of the game’s premier catching instructors, having played professionally at the position during a three-year minor league career with the Montreal Expos.

I’m a high school fried of Gary. We were QB and he was a great mentor of mine. Sorry to hear he is leaving the Red Sox. He is a great guy.

That is very sad The young sox catcher I’m sure will miss him much. I’m guessing Cleveland ?

crapcrapcrapcrapcrap. he made a lot of progress with Salty and he could’ve done that with Lavarnway

  • Brian

Salty is bad defensively, game calling, and framing pitches.  He isn’t a good catcher.  They need to start stressing the importance of pitch framing.  Having these poor catchers is the reason Lester gets so upset over missing the borderline calls, they miss so many close calls because he’s terrible at framing.  One of the Molina’s would dramatically change this staff.

Might be out of protest for the way they treated Atchison.

Can’t believe Tek would want that job.

Intrigue, the timing of this is a bit shoddy and points to some sort of behind the scenes tribulations, or health issues. Either way, an odd situation to be in shortly before camp breaks scrambling to replace a member of the coaching staff. I shall not mourn his loss however, it’s fairly obvious people of tenure have done very little to motivate the current Red Sox.

Last week he just finished what the call Camp Tuck for the young catchers like Lavarnway.

The timing is such that you have to suspect a personal issue or something happened to really tick him off.  Have to wait for some out of town reporters to break the story I guess.

I just wish the Red Sox could tell the truth about why he is leaving!  The Red Sox FO leaves a lot to be desired and this is just on of the many reasons why!

Well, there’s a spot for Tek.

  • Bruinman86

Well that sucks.  The guy was an asset to this team.  Well, hopefully the next guy can get the job done.

  • Bruinman86

     Too soon for Tek.

  • Imatarheel

If he’s retiring for a medical reason, the Sox are not free to release information. HIPPA rules.

Come on Doug… the front office doesn’t always have the liberty to speak freely when personal situations are involved, as is likely the case here. Bash them for real reasons, but let this play out. As a business owner, I’d never tell outsiders why one of my employees was leaving, whether they’re going to a competitor or having personal issues. There are legal and privacy issues to consider, and I think someone like Tuck has earned the respect to speak to the public in his own time and on his own terms.

Why the hell is the subject of the bullpen coach/catcher instructor seem to be coming up the past few years?  Is this guy a drama queen or have issues?

  • Qtrback

    Tek being there maybe??

  • Qtrback

The drama “queens” are the owners…….Doesn’t anyone see this?

Lesters whining stopped him from getting the close calls.

There’s no crying in baseball. Why did they treat Athcheson badly? Thats baseball he just did’nt fit in this time around. No team has treated their players better then the Red Sox.

tek is a catcher not a pitching coach. it matters to pitchers alot.
letting “great scott” go is a big ??????

  • Joe lLanen

We wish the best to a fine friend of the Red Sox nation!

  • Doug

I never saw any progress with Salty, he has to be one of the worst catchers in the league, defensively, and outside of some power, he is a lousy hitter as evidenced by his stats.  Maybe Terry will get him for the Indians, it’s sad, all the mystery, no answers, how about a little truth from the FO?

  • Doug

You are right, I spoke with emotions, not thinking and using common sense, thanks.

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

It’s the pitchers fault that they suck. There is ZERO proof that catchers have any REAL influence on how well a pitcher throws.

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

His pastballs went down from 26 to 6. That isn’t even a little improvement?

  • http://twitter.com/Zj_6 Zack Jones

Another note: The media at EEI is awful. We never get any answers because they are awful (Except for Speier) at what they do. Just my opinion
