Clay Buchholz suffers ‘mild’ right hamstring on first day 02.12.13 at 12:09 pm ET
By Mike Petraglia

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox manager John Farrell announced that starting pitcher Clay Buchholz suffered a right hamstring strain bending over to pick up a ball during the first day of pitchers fielding drills Tuesday at JetBlue Park.

Farrell said the team will know more Wednesday but added, “it was enough to get him off the field.”

Farrell said the strain was in the middle of his right hamstring and was in the “best possible” area for recovery, away from his buttocks and knee. Farrell said Buchholz will receive “several treatments” daily in an effort to get him back on the field as soon as possible.

Buchholz said that he’s “hopeful” that the injury is not serious, since trainers told him it was a strain and not a pull. Buchholz said he doesn’t expect to miss any spring training starts.

“I don’t know, I used to be pretty athletic and used to be able to agility stuff,” he said. “I just felt a little tweak and decided not to push it anymore, come in and have them take a look at it. They said it was the best-case scenario. They said if you had to have a hamstring injury, this was the best one.

“It was just a matter of doing all those sprints yesterday and being a little tight and maybe not stretching as much as I need to. Lesson learned. I’ll be stretching every day now as much as I can.”

Is this gonna be the new “Sosa-threw-his-back-sneezing” injury?

Only a loser from this team could strain his hamstring by bending over.  Can’t believe we have to look forward to watching this group of turds for the foreseeable future.  Why would buchholtz be stretching before a day of routine exercise?  I don’t know, maybe because he’s a professional athlete!  And the apathy of the red sox continues.  Yay!

Baseball players are such wimps. Get back on the Damm field. Here we go again!!

Okay, so who’s keeping track of the Sox walking wounded this spring?

  • Ih8sno

Same sh!t, different year with this guy.

  • Nighttrain75

this just in…stretching, it’s good for muscles.

  • Ty

This is just flat-out sad. He better be stretching every day now after this…

  • Mujo

Then don’t watch. Problem solved for you, bud!

Settle down, sparky.  Your fellow sox fans are simply a little frustrated by the team’s pathetic performance the past year or so.  No need to get all uppity on the guy.  Besides, not watching the games isn’t going to change the fact that your team still stinks.  No more caffeine for you today, sport.

At least he didn’t get hit by lightning when he bent over.

Sad comment on the current status of the pro athlete. My 80 year old granny wouldn’t have strained anything picking up a ball.

  • Bogiesarebad

at least he didn’t get sanduskied when he bent over

good pitcher–too bad he’s so fragile.

Just shoot him up with some more Toradol.

  • Schwank

Jeez it starts before they are even start.  But this will happen.  I’m hearing Doubrant has a tired arm from last year yet.  They’ll need Aceves and Morales before all is said and done

Him and Talib ought to get together

    Hurt already? Terrific.

wtf seriously? who are these guys trainer? I was at that game in san francisco where he pulled a hamstring running to 2nd base and was like wtf! A 25 year old pro athlete can’t even run 90 feet?

  • Gallaghertj1951

Buchholz does not know how to stay in-shape. I don’t think that he works hard to improve himself. Lazy. Just relies on natural talent. Must have got that from the Beckett school of pitching. Leg strenght is an important aspect of pitching. The guy just doesn’t get it.

  • yazfan

First day of training camp….basically means they put on their shorts, head to the field to have a pass…and this team already has 5 guys unable to participate in the first workout:

    Buchholz – hamstring

    Doubront – shoulder

    Breslow – shoulder

    Napoli – hip

    Ortiz – heel
