FORT MYERS, Fla. — One of the most anticipated arrivals of Red Sox spring training – David Ortiz — made an appearance at JetBlue Park on Tuesday morning. The designated hitter appeared in good shape, showing no ill effects from his right Achilles tendon injury

“I’m at about 90 percent,” he told WEEI.com.

Ortiz said that he is at approximately the same weight as he played at in 2012, but he feels he is stronger this time around. The designated hitter also confirmed that he has been doing sprint work, while also incorporating agility drills, hitting and different levels of running endeavors.

Ortiz said he hadn’t been told what the plan is for him to start spring training, having said last Wednesday that his hope was to be ready for the beginning of spring training games.

DOUBRONT TAKES NO CHANCES

Felix Doubront and Craig Breslow are slated to be a bit behind the rest of the pitchers after each experienced some shoulder discomfort. Both case are thought to be precautionary.

Doubront said Tuesday morning he will take seven days off from throwing bullpen sessions, although he will continue a long-toss program and is planning on pitching before the end of February.

“It’s nothing major. I’m just trying to get my shoulder in shape,” he said. “In the offseason my forearm was tight, but I never thought it was going to be anything with a shoulder. Thank God it’s nothing major. I just don’t want to push it.

“It’s not bad. I don’t want to start my season hurt. It’s a long spring training. I’m planning on pitching before this month ends. I’ve got time to catch up to guys.”

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE WBC

Ryan Dempster said it was a tough decision. Xander Bogaerts is waiting to see what difficult choices await.

Dempster explained his decision not to participate in the World Baseball Classic for Team Canada, saying, “It’s a lot to get ready for early. It’s a tremendous honor. I did it as a Junior player a couple of times with Team Canada. It’s just with a new team, and a lot of new guys, I wanted to be in camp. It’s always a hard decision. But at the end of the day, I wanted to be here in camp.”

Bogaerts will be playing  for the Netherlands in the WBC, but he’s not clear yet what position he’ll be playing. There is a good chance the 20-year-old will find himself at third base — a position he hasn’t played since Little League — with the presence of Jurickson Profar and Andrelton Simmons on the roster.

“I don’t know. Hopefully I get to hear from the Red Sox in the coming days. But I have no idea,” said Bogaerts regarding the potential position switch. “I’m open to anything. They can pitch me if they want.”

Bogaerts, who is planning to join the Netherlands around Feb. 25, was slated to play third base in the Futures Game last All-Star break before the Red Sox stepped in, landing him at designated hitter.

OVERBAY SINGS BUTTERFIELD’S PRAISES

Lyle Overbay has a unique perspective of what Mike Napoli is about to experience. Like Napoli, the former Blue Jay lived the life of a first baseman being mentored by infield coach Brian Butterfield.

“I’m going to tell you, there’s no one better,” he said. “He’s going to see what you have to do and what you need to work on. As long as you’re willing to work, he’ll make you a pretty good first baseman.”

QUOTE OF THE MORNING

Daniel Bard on going to see movies: “I’m usually not going to pay $12 to see a comedy in a theater. I don’t need my jokes in surround sound.”

David Ortiz says he is at 90%.  Is that accurate or simply a built-in excuse for a slow start to spring training and/or the regular season?  Wouldn’t it be refreshing to have Ortiz and management define his offensive production numbers prior to the season, based on career averages, and then PAY David based on the percentage he attains throughout the season:  if he reaches 90% of his career average he earns and will be paid 90% of his stated “salary”, if 120% he would get paid 20% over, etc.  Just dreaming…

Not bad for a 43-year-old guy.  Let’s just hope he doesn’t have to pee in a cup any time soon.

  • Jim Piersall

That would be ideal Sbruce, but unfortunately that’s not the way unions work.  Ortiz got his big contract and he knows it’s his last.  And now with the new testing procedures, I wouldn’t expect much from Big Juicer.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Sounds like a lot of slot guys, and a lot of cuts of decent players. When Gronk and Hernandez are back, and with Vereen or Washington, it will be a bit crowded in the middle.

    Dobson, on the X.
14 slot receivers… Common is BB, trying to convince the world, a quality Slot, is easy to find. Ok we get it slot receivers are say to find, you win Bill.
Now, lets move on, we still need a veteran receiver that can challenge outside the hash marks. With Ocho still flaming out in the rear view mirror, is BB now wary of signing that troubled vet…As of this morning there are several that have been released.
The Pats player personnel dept. reminds me of an old episode of M*A*S*H.
    Common u see it to,
There are still glaring holes in the defense. Abraham is actually making me salivate…
But that’s merely because he’s available, and the superior talent has been snatched up.
With roughly 4.4 million available under the cap…..no first round pick saves so much money….lol..
Both Abraham and Freeny, could find themselves employed in Foxborro next season,
But that’s just my own fantasy running away. Abraham is likely, as reported on other pages.. 2 years 7 million, mostly bonus money I’m sure,,

Ummmmm. It’s been 5 minutes, why isn’t your mouth on me?

  • pauliespad

belichick would lose control of the players and media all at once…..it would not be about the team, it would be about the gay player

  • Betty White

enough already with this stuff! What is the big deal with this “outing” I can;t stand when they say how brave Collins is for his admission when we’re in the midst of all the REAL bravery that was shown in Boston in regards to the marathon bombings, both responders and the victims who are truly showing or showed courage. I’m not a homo-phobe it’s just in today’s world what’s the big deal? Krafty Bob should be more concerned about his coach and his questionable drafting philosophy.

  • pauliespad

ya you’re right…the gau gay is so brave, and our responders are there all the time …….he did this for attention 2% of the people are gay, and we have to be tolerant of them and listen to them? go away, and live your lives gays, no one cares

I’m gonna try to be as sensitive about this as I can, but i’m friggin sick of hearing about this already!!! Seriously, so what if this guy has sex with dudes! Someones sexuality shouldnt even be a topic in this day an age, but instead, every major media outlet has done a story on this guy. I dont care if the guy like to do animals, as long as he doesnt harm children, and can play the game, which he cant! I can see it already, no team will sign him, and the uproar will start full throttle!! This guy probably wouldnt have been signed anyway, but now that he came out, people will try to twist things around and claim discrimination!!
