Jacoby Ellsbury, Larry Lucchino suggest openness to negotiating extension 02.14.13 at 3:14 pm ET
By Alex Speier

Jacoby Ellsbury is eligible for free agency after the 2013 season (AP)

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Jacoby Ellsbury appeared in the Red Sox clubhouse on Thursday and addressed the media for what could be the start of his final season in Boston. The 29-year-old is entering camp for the sixth time on a one-year contract, set to receive a $9 million salary for 2013. After the year, unless he signs an extension, the 2005 first-round pick of the Red Sox will have a chance to test the open market for the first time.

That reality created an inevitability. The question of Ellsbury’s future, and of his desire to remain in Boston long-term, was put forth early.

Ellsbury downplayed the significance of being in a contract year, suggesting that his goals were to be healthy and help the team win after last year’s bitterly disappointing campaign.

“I think I’m focused on playing and helping the team win,” he said. “Any question about contract or anything like that, it’s best just to call my agent and do it that way.”

He did allow that he would be open to discussing an extension with the Sox should they see fit to do so.

“I love playing here. I love the fans. And I appreciate the red sox obviously giving me an opportunity earlier in my career in the draft when they selected me. I love playing here,” he said. “Any contract stuff like that, just kind of like I said last year, if there’s anything that comes on the table, I’ll be presented with something and we’ll go from there. Anything as far as that, my whole thing is just winning ballgames. I love the atmsosphere, the fans. There will be times during the season when you’re worn down a little bit and you can step on the ballfield and you get re-energized. Just that competitive atmosphere. You have to win and that’s great for all of us, that environment. I thrive in that environment.”

Certainly, there were times when that proved true, most notably in 2011, when Ellsbury produced a 30/30 season that earned him runner-up honors in AL MVP balloting. He also set a Red Sox franchise record for steals in a season with 70 in 2009.

However, he missed almost all of 2010 with broken ribs and missed the first half of 2012 due to a right shoulder subluxation. When he returned, Ellsbury was never able to sustain any rhythm to repeat his offensive successes of the previous year, finishing the year with a .271/.313/.370/.682 line. Now, after completing his rehab in the offseason, he feels he is ready to return to form.

“I just never really got back [to form in 2012]. That’s why I’m so excited about this year,” he said. “I’ve got those blinders on and I’m focused. Just excited about the opportunity for us to win.”

While the Sox seem to have options in their system to replace Ellsbury — whether slated right-fielder Shane Victorino, who signed a three-year, $39 million deal with the Sox this winter or prospect Jackie Bradley Jr., who is expected to open the year in Double-A — CEO/president Larry Lucchino suggested that the team would like to retain their leadoff hitter if possible, and may pursue in-season (or even spring training) negotiations to see if such an outcome is possible.

“Would we like to have him here? Yes. Do I think there will be some negotiations that will take place during the course of the year, perhaps sooner? Possibly. We wouldn’t rule anything out,” said Lucchino. “But we’d very much like to have him here, like to have him be part of a core Red Sox team, as Ben Cherington likes to say, be part of the next great Red Sox team. But I don’t think it’s appropriate to have too much of a discussion about a negotiation process right now and in this forum.”

After all, there will be plenty of time for those discussions as the year unfolds.

Keep him and move Bradley to LF to train for 2014.  An outfield with three speedy guys who can all play center would not be a bad thing to have.

Needless to say, this isn’t really the story that the headline would suggest.

The Sox should have traded him last off season.

Not to mention there aren’t many big money market teams that would throw an abundance of money at Jacoby. He’s certainly worth more than JD Drew and Carl Crawford. Make the numbers work for a three year extension. He’s one of our farm boys and I heard him say he Loves playing here. Guess the toxins don’t get to him.

The Bourn deal lost him millions.

The problem with Ellsbury’s injuries is not how he got hurt, it’s the amount of time it takes him to come back from them. If I’m the Sox, I’m passing on this kid and would have traded him after his banner season in 2011.

I suggested that we traded him after his near mvp season in 2011 as well….I repeatedly posted here on WEEI back then that we should’ve moved Ellsbury to the Cardinals for Allen Craig and Shelby Miller,or even Lance Lynn…..and of course,as usual,i had the foresight, and noone was on board with me….If any of you remember,i also suggested moving Beckett and Crawford plus paying a chunk of their salaries to the Nationals for Jordan Zimmerman and Drew Storen…beckett was coming off a pretty good year…I also suggested moving Youkilis to the Reds for Yonder Alonso…..Noone wanted to listen….Everyone that I suggested we move had good value after 2011,better than in 2012…

Why?. Bourn is a career 90 OPS+ hitter.  Ellsbury had a 146 OPS+ in 2011.  If he can duplicate 2011 this year he could double what Bourn got with a 6-7 year deal.

Big question is if Ellsbury’s shoulder is fully healed.  Sounded like he partially tore the labrum with his dislocation, and those can be tricky.

No?  Rangers, Blue Jays, Braves, Phillies, heck, even the Yankees may be interested if they lift their spending restrictions and can’t sign Cano.

I don’t think Jacoby appreciated the way he was treated in 2010 so would love to fly the coop.  Going to take a lot more than a 3 year extension to keep him around.  Plenty of teams still willing to make 5-7 years commitments as we have seen this offseason.

He and Larry are just saying the things you always say when a separation is imminent.  They still have 1 more year to work together, and Jacoby wants fans to think he wants to stay.

I mean, what is Jacoby gong to say.  I can’t way to get out of here and this toxic dump with another 81 games left to play in Fenway?

He’s not signing a 3-yr deal, cmon use your brain. Why wait this long to settle for 3 yr contract?

I like Donald Jones and he could be a solid addition to the Pats passing attack while the rookies get their feet wet.

  • cfn

When it comes right down to it does anyone know who will play better with Brady, Jones or Jenkins? Jones positive is he is younger and probably understands Patriots since he played against them. Jenkins positive is that he is 6″4′ and has not played with a good QB lately.

yes 500;000.00 a year is a slap in the face not much more than min wage!

Poor guy don’t know how he is going to survive on that….wawawaaaa..Try 70,000 a year.

Whatever deficiencies Donald Jones might possess I do not know. But I’m encouraged by the intelligent answers in this interview. Like Flo-Rida, I’ve got a good feeling.

I’m not sure if you can keep more than one on the roster out of the trio of Donald Jones,Edelman,or Mike Jenkins…Not one of them really excels on running routes on the outside, and none of them will draw double coverage downfield, let alone get open downfield….And because there’s no guarantee that Dobson nor Boyce will be able to hit the ground flying out of the gate,we should take an honest look at a legitimate outside threat veteran…..A group of 5 consisting of Amendola,Dobson,a veteran,Boyce, and one of the three(Jones,Edelman,Jenkins),would be the wise thing to do…Because we’ve signed Leon Washington, and drafted Boyce(who can play the slot as well),I’m not completely sure on what Edelman does for us..I’d say Keep Donald Jones as the five, whereas he can also play the slot…

I’d try to see if we can make a three team trade with Cleveland and Philadelphia, swapping Mallett,Jeremy Maclin, and a 2nd round pick, with Maclin coming to us,mallett going to Cleveland, and the second rounder going to Philly….Rumors have been that Maclin is on the move..I say move Mallett is not as much of a risk now that Brian Hoyer is available(RELEASED from Arizona) as of yesterday.

Donald Jones does have the possibility of being a good player. True to Patriot form, they are just adding to the stable of wide receivers and hoping he can stick. The one thing he brings to the table that the Patriots often identify and do well with is the fact that he has played well against the Patriots (Wilfork hit excluded).

I do agree that there are a ton of receivers yet again on this team, so I am not sure how he fits into the grand scheme once you include Jenkins, Edelman, and Hawkins. However, something makes me think that he will make a strong push to make the team. He does have solid skill, can catch, and has been able to do it on an AFC east team – three attractive qualities to the Patriots.

  • Dee-fense, dee-fense!

Christopher . . .Just wondering, and not pretending to know – - does the Pats’ super-complicated system of reads really pay off? Does it cause decent receivers to wash out of the system? What worked for a veteran group is not always right for a developing corps of receivers. Can it be simplified just a little? What other teams have as complicated a system for receivers, and how has it been working for them? This would make a great subject for a really insightful column.

God I Love Wilfork, guy is a beast. Thanks again to Donald Jones for not seeing a 300 lbs monster lining him up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pastorjdminerella JD Minerella

All these receivers have one thing in common. They have never played with Tom Brady. We just need a couple of them to pan out and the offense will be more than fine. The success of the Patriots will once again hinge on the defense. We’ll see how it goes.

  • Ptrckbwn

That would be nice, but you really don’t see 3 team trades in the NFL. The last one i think was 2010, and before that was 2006 if memory serves me correctly. I’d like to see Maclin in a Pats uni though.

  • INNovator

I honestly don’t think its much as the system being complicated,as much as it is being honest about how good were the players that we’ve actually brought in…Tons of game breaking receivers all around the league in difficult systems…There were a lot of question marks on a lot of these guys that BB brought in,even before they got here(Chad Jackson,Chad Johnson,Taylor Price,Brandon Lloyd one year wonder etc)…..We’ve passed on a lot of talent at receiver, only to watch them flourish for other teams, all the while the players we took in their places have been miserable failures….This is on Belichick…I just want to win another ring! Dobson and Boyce are a start, but we really need one more just in case one of the new guys doesn’t work out immediately….Jones and Jenkins don’t draw double coverage PERIOD!!

  • innovator

I would be ecstatic if we could substitute Jones/Edelman/Jenkins with just ONE guy who scares the opposing defensive coordinators to leave their safety back because of the threat…
