It’s early, but Daniel Bard looks ‘a lot better’ than last year 02.16.13 at 3:45 pm ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. — It’s the nature of the beast. Because his season went so far off the rails last year, every throwing session that Daniel Bard has this spring will face a higher degree of scrutiny than that of virtually every one of his teammates. Such was the case on Saturday, when the right-hander threw his first live batting practice session of the spring, with minor leaguers Jeremy Hazelbaker and Jonathan Diaz stepping in the cage with Bard on the mound.

One obvious thing stood out: Bard was hitting the glove repeatedly. His fastball was down, and regularly popped the mitt of catcher Dan Butler. Butler also worked with Bard a year ago in Triple-A Pawtucket, so his take on the session was noteworthy.

“He looked confident out there. He was able to make some quick adjustments,” said Butler. “His fastball command was a lot better. He’s got a lot better feel for it. And change up looks good, slider looks good. He’s very consistent out there with his delivery. That’s the main thing with him.

“There’s definitely some adjustment that’s being made there [since last year]. He looks like he’s able to do that now. It looks a lot better.”

That early impression — which was in line with reports of Bard’s early bullpen sessions — was shared by manager John Farrell and GM Ben Cherington. At the same time, while encouraged, Cherington also wanted to downplay the idea of getting too caught up in how Bard looks in any single outing, preferring to be more mindful of the goal of preparing for the season rather than potentially riding a daily roller coaster based on individual bullpen sessions.

“One of the things we’ve talked with Daniel about, let’s not make this a story everyday,” said Cherington. “He’s a healthy pitcher getting ready for the season. I understand what happened last year, that there will be interest, but like a lot of other guys, he’s getting ready for the season and he’s back in a role that should be comfortable to him, working on things. … [He is] another very talented arm back there. He’s going through his progression and getting ready for games.”

The twin messages — that Bard looked good, but that it’s pointless to jump to any conclusions — was reiterated by Farrell.

“Again, it’s [live batting practice]. I don’t want to over-analyze it too much,” said Farrell. “The one point of emphasis he is trying to get done is not to guide the ball. Stay agressive, even in the early BP and bullpen sessions, and he’s doing just that.

“I think we want to be careful not to jump too early here,” Farrell continued. “This is the third time he’s been on the mound since we’ve opened up camp. We’ll get a better read once we get into games and you get into the game-speed and the adrenaline matched to it. That’s more of an accurate read at that point.”

Here’s to Daniel and his road back to becoming an effective pitcher…if he can pull this off, he mends a back end of the game very nicely….

  • Go for it

With out his 98-100 fastball he is average. Stay a little wild and get some thick glasses. If not it is back to AAA.

  • Pedro

Looks great until he gets bombed. this guy is a head case. People haved figured him out. Wait him out and make hime throw strikes, which he can’t

  • WhaleBelly

fragile is an understatement at this point.

He’s AAA bound barring a Bailey trade or DFA. The bullpen’s currently full as it is, especially considering they will likely lose Franklin Morales and Clayton Mortensen to DFAs after Spring Training–neither have options remaining.

Tell me when his velocity is 98 mph again, otherwise there is nothing here.  If I had a nickel for every pitcher who looked good in the bullpen and could not get batters out I would be a lot richer.

That said, if his arm slot is back to normal that is probably the only useful information at this point.

actually I’ll take anything 95+ and up with control. Then with that great slider the strike outs will abound. Love to see it again!

  • H Bouley

Well for three previous years to last he did throw strikes and loads of strike outs. Then they changed his arm angle when trying to make him into a starter and the results were disasterous. Sounds now like he’s getting back to more like the top reliever he was.

With Bards control of last year I’m not sure I’d wanna be anywhere near either batters box if I was one of those minor leaguers LOL But then I guess so far its worked out well. :)

Nice story to keep us updated in Bard. I will agree….nothing to much to see here until later in spring training. But, two things stand out in this take that Bard struggled with last year – aggressiveness and confidence. Lack of those two qualities transformed him from a top reliever to a pitcher who had to shut it down. This is a nice starting point for what looks like it could be a good story.

    Good observation Chris.

Its apparent that Cherington and Farrel don’t want to much read into anything,i’m glad they brought it out to the media. They don’t want to pressure Bard. It appears at least right now that he’ll go to Triple A.Once Bard realizes what his role is he should be fine.He know’s now that he’s not a starter.

It should help him to know that he isn’t a starter. He wanted the role to begin with badly and may have influenced Cherington giving him his shot.I’m sure Cherington has learned a lesson as well.

Some people don’t know that the set up man can be more important then closer,as a closer comes in with a lead ussually.I don’t like the idea of Bailey as set up man.

Thats exactly what Cherington and Farrel said.Bard is a work in progress. But we know what he has done, his arm is in good shape and if his head gets straight he should get back too form.

Like any of the bozos carping here about how lousy Bard is ever did anything remotely like the first-rate relief pitching Daniel Bard has done. He’s been outstanding. Here’s hoping he can be outstanding again. Have a little respect, dudes. Just a little. It’d be good for ya.

I hope Bard can make a comeback and recover the velocity and great stuff that wiped out batters in the days before 2012′s wretched experiment in starting. Would hate, hate, hate to see him become yet another casualty in the make-a-great-reliever-back-into-a-starter graveyard. For every pitcher who’s done it successfully, it seems like there’s a fistful of talented and accomplished young relievers who not only couldn’t do it but were wrecked in the attempt. I would like to hear analysis from a pitching coach regarding just why that transition has so often been destructive to the pitchers attempting it. I understand the challenge of developing that third viable pitch which enables one to vary one’s pitching sequence effectively a third time through the lineup; but why is it that so often a pitcher will lose velocity AND movement in his effort to pace himself for a starter’s five-to-seven inning outings, and then have a heck of a time recovering either after the experiment has been shut down and he’s returned to relief work? Presumably the mechanics change in some way and one develops bad habits that are tough to unlearn?

  • Uncle Buck

One of the more interesting aspects of his comeback attempt it the fact it is not physical.  Almost all comebacks are from an injury.  I hope he gets it figured out and shuts up a lot of naysayers.  He has talent, we know that.

Great to read Daniel is pounding the strike zone.  He would be an inspiration to see him come back.    Glad his coach and GM are not micro analyzing every performance.   This kid can pitch !

  • YazLynnEvans

    He’s gonna be trade bait.

Look folks! It’s Mike/Bill/Ron/Pete/Sally/Yankee27…or…..maybe the biggest coward of them all, the always ignorant and revisionist Johnny Spygate. If you want to believe this garbage, nobody in the history of the NY Football Giants ever sucked…..never…Cedric Wilson and Ron Dayne were marvelous…I always loved the Chirs Colloway muff in the 97 Wild Card game, the Phil Simms fumble against the Eagles, and less we forget, Super Bowl XXXV …in case you forgot, it was Ravens 34-7 over the GMEN…that’s just a taste idiot. Wanna go some more?

Another guy who will be broke in 3-5 years.Take away the need for attention all the time and some of his off the field conduct and he seems like a pretty nice fellow. Maybe a little dumb and used to being spoiled but cool. Maybe he can start rehabbing houses in Ft. Lauderdale and get a tv show like Rob Van Winkle….errrrrr…Vanilla Ice and call it The Ochocinco project :)

  • Uncle Buck

Come on mike, tom, bill, name of the troll moment, is that really the best you got kid? Geesh. Pretty weak.

  • Betty White

I bet Captain Hoodie will give him a look this year and bring him into camp, good value you know. Fat Albert H. is a distinct possibility too. Did he draft the water boy from the Rutgers football team in the 7th round as well? I forgot to check that. While the other 31 teams are taking players into the 7th from the SEC, PAC10, ACC, Big 12 etc, he’s loading up on guys from Rutgers……only time will tell in his Hoodie-ness knows something everybody else didn’t. BTW – I despise all NY teams, especially the Jets! The only thing I love about NY is performing on Broadway
