| Ben Cherington talks about Mike Carp acquisition | 02.20.13 at 11:41 am ET |
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Speaking while watching Franklin Morales‘ live batting practice, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington talked a bit about his team’s newest acquisition, Mike Carp:
REGARDING HOW TRADE CAME TOGETHER
“We’ve been talking about left-handed hitters all winter and Carp is a guy we talked about, a little bit in the offseason and then after he was designated. We felt it makes sense to try and acquire him and bring him into this competition. He has power, has played first and left and has had some big league success, is still young and we think offensively could fit in our ballpark.”
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR LYLE OVERBAY
“It’s a competition for the last outfield and first base spots. We’ll see how that comes together. There’s more than one spot that is up for competition. We have a group of guys, and that hasn’t changed. We’re just adding someone to it.”
HOW COMFORTABLE WITH CARP IN OUTFIELD
“He has played a fair amount out there, but we’ll see where he is. We’ll get him here, go through the physical and see where he is. But first base is his primary position.”
